JoVE is celebrating 10 years of empowering students, teachers, scientists, and academic librarians throughout the world to achieve their goals using our innovative products! With all the excitement surrounding our 10th anniversary, I can’t help but reflect on the years I’ve been a part of the JoVE team and the many proud experiences that have come from my time here.

When I joined JoVE in 2013, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to build the HR operation from the ground up. I am proud to have had the opportunity to recruit and retain incredibly intelligent people who truly make this company run successfully. Everyone plays such an important role here at JoVE as we continue to grow.

Now that I have shared some of my memorable moments, I thought it would be great to highlight what some of my colleagues feel were memorable achievements for them during their careers at JoVE:

Moshe Pritsker – CEO & Editor-in-Chief

“One of my proudest moments was in 2008, after the indexing of JoVE in PubMed, the world database of scientific journals maintained by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) of the National Institute of Health (NIH). NLM has a special committee that consist of scientists, physicians, and university librarians that decide whether a publication matches their rigorous criteria for inclusion in their database. The indexing certifies a journal as a legitimate venue of publication in the eyes of the scientific community and also ensures its usage as PubMed is searched by every biomedical scientist in the world on a daily basis.”

“As JoVE was the first video journal, its indexing required convincing the NLM’s leadership that, despite being innovative and applying a unique video-based format, we maintained the traditional standards of scientific publishing such as peer-review. I managed to secure meetings with some of the NLM leaders at the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland, and flew there to make my case and hear more about their requirements. We then had to do a lot of work to adjust the JoVE article format to comply with their rules. I jumped with happiness when a few months later we received a letter from NLM stating that JoVE has been accepted for indexing in PubMed, and that we were now officially recognized as scientific publishers!”

Alice Lin – Director of Marketing

“One of my proudest moments was having the opportunity to build the Marketing Team from the ground up. Recruiting 6 very talented marketing professionals to be part of the new and exciting marketing team was not only fun but rewarding. Together, we are able to execute various campaigns and initiatives worldwide including, initiating a website redesign, giving JoVE a new look, planning our 10 Year Anniversary Celebration, developing various marketing collateral, and much more. It is an exciting time to be at JoVE as we’re continuing to grow going into our next 10 years.”

Justin Cherny – Director of Operations

“One of my proudest moments I would have to say at JoVE was when I was writing my self-evaluation this past year. It took me the better part of an hour to list all the projects we had completed in 2016. I was very proud thinking about working with every one of the departments at JoVE, and how much collaboration and team effort was required to get these projects from ideas through to deployment. I really like that aspect of my job, and it’s something of which I am immensely proud.”

Avital Braiman – Editorial Director

“One of my proudest moments was reaching the milestone of publishing 5000 articles.”

Steven Altieri – Director of Sales, Americas

“I’m proudest of the teams that I’ve built here in Cambridge and in Melbourne and seeing the growth of the team. But in terms of a single moment, I always think about starting with JoVE at the beginning of March 2012. As a brand new sales guy, I sat down at my desk and looked at the territory I was assigned and the very bottom of the list was the state of Wyoming. I made a note to call them. Six months and a lot of phone calls and emails later, the University of Wyoming signed a deal for a five-year subscription!”

“JoVE has grown as a company but that deal from 2012 taught me two things that I still live by in sales: One, talk to everybody- you never know who might be a potential customer. Two, persistence pays off. Over the six months that it took to bring Wyoming from “What’s JoVE?” to “Where do we sign?” there were a lot of unanswered phone calls and a lot of days where the deal looked like it might get derailed but in the end, the deal closed and became a template for a lot of the deals that came afterwards.”

Aaron Kolski-Andreaco – Chief Product Officer

“One of my proudest moments was back 10 years ago when everything was new and exciting. I traveled a lot to set up the videographer network, which was inspiring.”

Thomas Low – Financial Controller

“One of my proudest moments at JoVE was building financial procedures to help the company continue to be financially profitable.”

Dan Robinson – Chief Technology Officer

“One of my proudest moments was implementing a globally load balanced environment for jove.com, with servers in Dallas, Switzerland, and Hong Kong. This environment allows more visitors to our site, which grows daily. It will also allow quicker website load times around the world, and adds stability of the system. In IT we are always proud when we make our systems better and faster, and this project certainly does both”

It has been rewarding to watch this company grow and improve from year to year. I am eager to continue to work on growing and improving JoVE with the amazing people who have made this company a success over the past decade.
