Subscriptions FAQ
What's going on? Does watching JoVE videos now require a subscription?
Yes. As of April 2, 2009, a subscription is required to view most of JoVE video content beyond the first couple of minutes. We will keep the first 1-2 minutes of all videos available for free without subscription . If you find JoVE useful for your studies/research, please make a recommendation to librarians at your institution.
Do you have any sample/free/open access content?
Yes! We will continue to provide some free and/or open access content. We also provide free trial subscriptions, and non-subscribers can continue to watch portions of videos and read written articles.
Why did you decide to require subscriptions?
Unfortunately, video production and the technological infrastructure to support it (bandwidth, servers, support, etc.) are very costly. Because this cost is higher than traditional text-only publishing, it is not possible to operate on fees collected from academic authors. Consequently, we made the difficult decision to make a large portion of our content only available to paid subscribers in order to cover these costs.
How do I subscribe?
Thanks for your interest!
Here is our pricing and subscription information.
If you think JoVE would be really helpful to others in your institution, please tell your librarian about us! Here's some sample text you can use:
JoVE (www.jove.com) was founded in October 2006 as the first online video-journal for biological research. JoVE is listed in MEDLINE and PubMed, and its editorial board includes 22 scientists from leading academic institutions including Harvard, Princeton and NIH. As of April 2009, JoVE has released 25 monthly issues including over 300 video-protocols on experimental approaches in neuroscience, immunology, developmental biology, microbiology, plant biology, bioengineering, medicine and other fields. To facilitate integration of video into scientific publishing, JoVE has developed an organizational and technological structure to produce scientific videos in research labs in North America, Europe and Japan.
And of course, tell your librarian about how JoVE helped you personally as well!
