Leishmania donovani: A parasitic hemoflagellate of the subgenus Leishmania leishmania that infects man and animals and causes visceral leishmaniasis (Leishmaniasis, Visceral). The sandfly genera Phlebotomus and Lutzomyia are the vectors.
