Chong Zhang is an Associate Professor in the Institute of Biochemical Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. He received his Bachelor's degree and a Ph.D. from the Tsinghua University, China.

During Dr. Zhang’s training (2002-2008) he focused on the study of fluorescence-based quantification of Enterobacter aerogenes and its NADH pathway mechanism for hydrogen production. As a post-doctoral fellow (2008 to 2010) in the Xin-hui Xing’s lab at the Key Laboratory of Industrial Biocatalysis, Ministry of Education in Tsinghua University, China, he further studied the fluorescent proteins as a visible molecular signal for rapid quantification of bioprocesses, such as correcting for the inner filter effect in measurements of fluorescent proteins in high-cell-density cultures and the temperature influence on fluorescence intensity and enzyme activity of the fusion protein of GFP and hyperthermophilic xylanase.

Dr. Zhang was recruited as a research assistant in 2010 and then became an associate professor in 2011 at Tsinghua University. He received many awards, such as the Young Asian Biotechnologist Prize (2020), the First Prize of Technology Invention Award of China National Light Industry (2019), the “Lun Shiyi” Outstanding Young Scholar Award in the Fermentation Engineering (2018) and the gold medal at 45th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva (2017). His research programs are committed to microbial intelligent manufacturing, study and development of original high-throughput genotype-phenotype association (GPA) technologies and equipment, including high-throughput characterization and continuous evolution of microbial industrial phenotypes, in-depth mining of genome-scale genotype function, research equipment of genotype and industrial phenotype association.
