Heike Romanowski, née Sigloch, is a research associate at the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) in Berlin, Germany.

She is an engineer and received her diploma degree in bioprocessing at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany.

In her diploma thesis, which she wrote while researching at the Danish Technological Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, she focused on the development of a microfluidic system to quantify proteins in solutions.

After her studies, she worked at the Institute of Engineering in Life Science at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Her research at the department of Biomolecular Separation Engineering dealt with the characterization and stabilization of concentrated protein solutions for the development of biopharmaceuticals. Heike Romanowski laid groundwork in this research area by adapting high frequency rheology to the assessment of protein solutions and was able to correlate the obtained rheological values to protein solubility and thus solution stability of concentrated solutions. Worldwide this finding was a first step in this direction.

Since 2019, she is working in the Department of Chemical and Product Safety of the BfR. BfR is the scientific agency of the Federal Republic of Germany, which is responsible for preparing expert reports and opinions on food and feed safety as well as on the safety of substances and products. In this context, the Institute plays an important role in improving consumer protection and advising the federal government of Germany.
