Postdoctoral Fellow

Hsiu-Wen Tsai is a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She received her undergraduate from Taipei Medical University, a Master from National Cheng-Kung University and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida.

As a post-doctoral fellow in University of Florida (2013 to 2017), Dr. Tsai focused her research on mapping brain stem neural circuits during respiratory defensive behaviors, such as cough, sneeze and swallow apnea. In addition to basic science, she also participated in clinical research projects. She demonstrated that patients with non-tuberculous mycobacteria infections had defect cough ability that might cause lung infections.

Dr. Tsai joined Dr. Alexander Hillel’s laboratory in 2018. Her current research is focusing on investigating the pathogenic mechanisms of iatrogenic laryngotracheal stenosis and developing specific therapeutic strategies. Her area of expertise includes respiratory physiology, neuroscience, molecular biology and metabolism.
