Jihye Ryu

Jihye Ryu is a PhD candidate in the Psychology Department, Rutgers University (New Brunswick, NJ). She received her undergraduate degree at Yonsei University (Seoul, Korea); and a master’s degree in Statistics at Columbia University (New York, NY); and a subsequent master’s degree in Psychology from City University of New York (New York, NY).
Since 2014, she has been a graduate trainee in the Sensorimotor Integration Lab under the supervision of Dr. Elizabeth Torres. Her research broadly centers on agency; specifically, on how an individual obtains a sense of control of one’s body, and thus establish a sense of self. She approaches this question from an embodied perspective, where different layers of the nervous systems (central, peripheral, and autonomic) interact with one another in a complex manner to produce behaviors at will. By examining the stochasticity and connectivity of the biophysical signals generated by the different layers of the nervous systems, and comparing such characterizations among patients with compromised motor control and healthy individuals, she attempts to understand how different levels of agency emerge across different contexts and individuals.
Jihye Ryu is a recipient of the Fellowship of Excellence in Computational and Data Science by Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute in 2018, and is expected to receive her PhD in 2019.
