Mark Goodman Bowden

Dr. Bowden is an Associate Professor and Director of the Division of Physical Therapy at the Medical University of South Carolina and a Research Health Scientist at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston, SC. He received his physical therapy degree from Duke University in 1995, and after 8 years of clinical practice and management received his PhD from the University of Florida in 2009. He completed a Fellowship in the APTA Education Leadership Institute in 2014 prior to assuming the role of Program Director at MUSC. Dr. Bowden’s research focuses on recovery of walking after stroke and emphasizes biomechanical mechanisms of movement impairment as well as neurophysiological assessment and treatment. Dr. Bowden received the APTA Eugene Michels New Investigator Award in 2013 and is currently co-leading the development of a Clinical Practice Guideline focusing on improving locomotor function after acute and sub-acute neurologic injury. Recent interests involve establishing treatment frameworks to promote neurologic recovery and prevent occurrence of secondary medical events. This treatment framework is based on individualizing treatment and progression parameters to assist in altering the delivery of care and produce better rehabilitation outcomes through the application of current best evidence.
