Mascha van 't Wout-Frank

Mascha van 't Wout-Frank is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and affiliated with the Center for Neurorestoration and Neurotechnology at the VA Providence Healthcare System. She received her undergraduate degree and Ph.D. from Utrecht University in The Netherlands.

Dr. van 't Wout-Frank's training is in the field of cognitive neuropsychiatry and during her Ph.D. she focused on emotion processing in schizophrenia and those at increased risk for developing schizophrenia. After obtaining her Ph.D., her research continued to focus on emotional and social processing when she moved to the University of Arizona, and later Brown University, for a postdoctoral research position in the field of neural decision sciences using methods from game theory. At Brown University she became particularly interested in the use of noninvasive brain stimulation to understand and modify negative emotions, such as fear, regret and pain. In 2019 she became a Project Leader within the NIGMS COBRE Center for Neuromodulation at Butler Hospital, and together with her ongoing work within the Center for Neurorestoration and Neurotechnology, she studies the effects of context and timing of noninvasive brain stimulation to improve treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder.
