Rafael M. Santos

Dr. Rafael Santos is Assistant Professor in Environmental Engineering at the University of Guelph, and is a registered Professional Engineer of Ontario. Dr. Santos obtained B.A.Sc. (Hons) and M.A.Sc. degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto (Canada), and a Ph.D. (s.c.l.) degree in Chemical Engineering from the KU Leuven (Belgium). Dr. Santos has also worked at Zenon Environmental, Vale Inco, and Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning.

Dr. Santos’s areas of expertise include CO2 sequestration/utilization, solid waste and wastewater treatment, environmental remediation, process intensification, applied mineralogy and geochemistry. Some recent projects include: the conversion of carbon dioxide into building materials; climate change mitigation measures and verification tools for agricultural settings; the beneficiation of food processing wastes into high-value carbon-neutral soil amendments; and process intensified mineral carbonation of mining tailings.
