Rosalie M. Sterner

Rosalie M. Sterner is an M.D.-Ph.D. student in the Mayo Clinic Medical Scientist Training Program of the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences within the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. She graduated with a B.S. in Biology and Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology and a B.A. in Chemistry (summa cum laude, University Honors) from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Her Ph.D. work has been pursued through the Department of Immunology at Mayo Clinic.
During her Ph.D., she has studied immunology, the cancer microenvironment, and cancer treatments including chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cells. She pursued her Ph.D. in the laboratory of Dr. Karen E. Hedin, Department of Immunology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, where she researched cellular signaling within the cancer microenvironment. In addition, she collaborated with the laboratory of Dr. Saad S. Kenderian, Division of Hematology and Department of Immunology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, studying chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cells. CAR-T cells are T-cells engineered to express a receptor that helps them to better target cancer cells. Her project in this lab worked on developing mechanisms to better control CAR-T cell associated toxicities and enhance CAR-T cell efficacy.
She continues to pursue her research interests, has developed curriculum to train scientific and medical trainees in immunotherapy, and is completing her M.D. at Mayo Clinic.
