Yi Zhang is a Scientist in the SUGAR Program, X-star, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), Yokosuka. He received his B.Sc. degree in biotechnology from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China, and a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering in 2013 from Peking University, China.
Dr. Zhang is a technology-driven life scientist. He was trained in multidisciplinary fields, including biology, analytical chemistry, and microfluidics. He was awarded the China National Petroleum Corporation Scholarship, National Scholarship for Graduate Students, and several other university scholarships and honorary titles for the development of miniaturized ultrasensitive bioanalytical techniques for proteins and nucleic acids. Under the financial support of the JSPS Fellowship program, he initiated and conducted his research on the development of massively parallel protein synthesis and screening technology.
Dr. Zhang was recruited as a tenure-track scientist at JAMSTEC in 2017. He continued developing research tools for identifying novel biocatalysts from unculturable microbial dark matter.
