Vinod B. Shidham

Professor
Dr. Shidham is a recognized leader in the field of cytopathology and surgical pathology. After serving in academia in India up to the level of Associate Professor of Pathology at Grant Medical College and JJ Group of Hospitals in Mumbai till 1985, he left for middle east and then to USA. Currently he is Professor of Pathology at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Karmanos Cancer Center, & Detroit Medical Center, Detroit, MI in USA. He is Vice chair- Anatomic Pathology and Director of Cytopathology, Cytopathology fellowship training program, and GI pathology. Prior to his board in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, and cytopathology in USA after ACGME recognized training, he had also completed his pathology training in India and had Royal College of Pathologists membership from UK. His areas of interest and expertise include cytopathology (fine needle aspiration biopsy- both technical and interpretation, serous cavity fluid cytopathology, pulmonary cytopathology, intraoperative cytopathology, emerging technologies in cytopathology, molecular cytopathology) and surgical pathology (soft tissue tumors, gastrointestinal pathology). He has focused on novel technologies and has invented-developed variety of methods and devices including Shidham’s stain for urate crystal in tissue sections, method for staining air-dried smears with Papanicolaou and HE stain, ‘MCW melanoma cocktail’ for evaluation of melanoma micrometastases in sentinel lymph nodes, rapid intraoperative immunocytochemical evaluation of imprint smears of sentinel lymph nodes for melanoma micrometastases, special easy to use fine needle aspiration biopsy needle device with functional valve, AV marker, SCIP approach for evaluation of immunoprofiles of cell block sections especially of serous fluids, and Shidham’s device for making cell blocks. Many of these researches were funded by grants from various institutions including National Institute of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA and Cancer Center of Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI, USA. He has served in various capacities with many national and international professional organizations. He has published extensively and presented at various national-international conferences. He has also contributed multiple chapters including ‘Respiratory Tract Cytopathology’ in Atkinson Atlas of Diagnostic Cytopathology; Serous effusions: reactive, benign and malignant, In Gray & Kocjan, ed. Diagnostic Cytopathology, Elsevier, 3rd edition, Chapter 3; and Anaplastic carcinoma, In Cibas & Ali, ed, The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology: Definitions, Criteria, and Explanatory Notes- Based on NCI Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration State of the Science Conference, Chapter 11. He is editor and contributing author of ‘Diagnostic Cytopathology of Serous Cavity Fluid’ (W. B. Saunders Company, Philadelphia, PA ISBN:141600145X; ISBN-13: 9781416001454). Dr. Shidham is a strong proponent of ‘Open access’ philosophy in academic publications. He is editor-in-chief of ‘CytoJournal” (http://www.cytojournal.com) which is a peer-reviewed, PubMed indexed open access journal publishing high quality papers in cytopathology
