15.9: 労働力の市場供給

人々が市場で行う意思と能力のある総労働量は、各労働者が集団でどれだけの労働力を提供するかによって決まります。

労働市場では、膨大な数の労働者が労働力を提供します。労働力が提供する総労働量は、現行の賃金水準に基づきます。賃金と、市場のすべての労働者が提供する労働量との関係は、労働の市場供給曲線によって表されます。

上向きの労働力供給曲線

労働力供給曲線は一般に上向きに傾斜しており、これは、他の要因が一定であると仮定すると、賃金が上昇すると労働力の供給量が増加することを示しています。逆に、同じ条件下で賃金が低いと労働力の供給量は減少します。

賃金が上昇すると、収入が増加し余暇の機会費用が上昇するため、個人はより多くの労働力を提供するよう動機付けられます。賃金が上昇すると、新しい労働者が労働市場に引き寄せられ、現在の労働者はより多くの時間働くよう促されます。労働供給を分析する場合、供給される労働量の変化は、単に労働時間の変化ではなく、主に労働者数の増加を反映していると仮定すると便利な場合がよくあります。

労働は生産のユニークな要素です。労働力は企業から求められていますが、それは家庭で暮らす個人によって供給されています。

労働の市場供給曲線は、市場賃金率と労働者が市場で提供しようとする労働量との関係を示しています。これは、市場賃金以外に何も変わらないと仮定した場合です。

一定の賃金が達成された後、個人の労働供給曲線は後退する可能性があります。これは、より高い賃金の臨時収入が、収入を減少させることなくより多くの余暇を消費することを可能にするときに発生します。しかし、労働市場の供給曲線は、賃金の上昇が労働市場への追加労働者の参入を促すため、上向きに傾斜していると想定されています。
