Q1: What is the difference between empirical and molecular formulas?
The empirical formula shows the smallest whole-number ratio of elements in a compound, while the molecular formula represents the actual number of atoms of each type. For example, hydrogen peroxide has an empirical formula of H-O but a molecular formula of H2O2. Both formulas describe the same compound but at different levels of detail.
Q2: How does the law of conservation of mass apply to determining empirical formulas?
The law of conservation of mass states that mass cannot be created or destroyed in a chemical reaction. This principle allows chemists to use gravimetric analysis, tracking mass changes during reactions, to determine empirical formulas. By measuring the mass of each component before and after heating or reaction, the mass ratio of elements can be calculated accurately.
Q3: What are hydrates and how do they differ from anhydrous compounds?
Hydrates are chemical compounds with water molecules attached but not covalently bonded. When heated, hydrates lose their water and become anhydrous, or without water. Hydrates and anhydrous compounds have unique physical properties because their molecules organize differently, which is why copper chloride hydrate changes from blue-green to red-brown when heated.
Q4: What is a structural formula and how does it relate to other chemical formulas?
A structural formula shows the number of each type of atom and the bonds between them, using single lines to represent chemical bonds. Unlike the empirical formula, which shows only ratios, or the molecular formula, which shows actual atom counts, the structural formula reveals how atoms are connected. For hydrogen peroxide, the structural formula is H-O-O-H.
Q5: How do you calculate the empirical formula from experimental mass data?
Convert the mass of each component to moles using molar mass values. Then divide each mole value by the smallest number of moles in the sample. The resulting whole-number ratio is the empirical formula. For copper chloride hydrate, this process yields CuCl2·2H2O, indicating two moles of chloride and two moles of water per mole of copper.
Q6: Why is determining the empirical formula important in forensic chemistry?
Forensic chemists use empirical formulas to identify unknown substances like drugs and poisons found at crime scenes. Once the empirical formula is determined, a mass spectrometer can separate components by their mass-to-charge ratio to find the molecular mass. This information helps determine the molecular formula and identify the unknown substance.
Q7: What experimental steps are needed to determine the empirical formula of a copper chloride hydrate?
Dry the crucible, weigh the hydrate sample, heat until color changes from blue-green to red-brown, cool in a desiccator, and measure the anhydrous mass. Dissolve the sample, add aluminum to reduce copper ions to solid metal, filter and dry the copper. Measure all masses to calculate moles and determine the empirical formula using molar mass conversions.
