Dr. Ramiro de Almeida is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Medical Sciences, University of Aveiro, Portugal. Prior to joining the University of Aveiro he was a Professor at the School of Health Sciences, Porto, Portugal. Dr. Almeida received his BSc in Biochemistry and a Ph.D. in Cell Biology from the University of Coimbra, and he carried out his post-doctoral studies at Weill Cornell Medical College, New York. His laboratory combines molecular, genetic, imaging and microfluidic tools to identify the intra-axonal mechanisms utilized by developing neurons to extend axons and form synaptic connections, which ultimately result in the proper wiring of the nervous system. He is also investigating how these mechanisms can be used under injury scenarios to promote neuronal regeneration.
