Professor Xiaoyang Zhao is the Deputy Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences, Southern Medical University, and the Vice Director of the academic committee. Dr. Zhao’s research mainly focuses on infertility and integrates a variety of new, cutting-edge technologies to make breakthrough progress in sperm regeneration. The highlights of his scientific achievements involved depiction of the developmental trajectory of germ cells throughout human spermatogenesis; reprogramming somatic cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and generation of iPSC mice by tetraploid complementation; and induction of embryonic stem cells into functional spermatids to obtain healthy offspring. He has published 29 papers in journals such as Nature, Cell Stem Cell, and Cell Research as corresponding or co-corresponding author. His work on somatic cell reprogramming was selected as one of the top ten medical breakthroughs by the US publication "Time", and his work on obtaining haploid sperm cells by differentiation in vitro was ranked among "China Annual Papers" by Cell Press.
