This study investigates the pain response in infants using electroencephalography (EEG) to measure brain activity during mild pain stimuli. The methodology involves applying a flat-tip probe to the infant's hand while recording EEG signals to analyze nociceptive responses.
Measuring pain-evoked brain activity in neonates provides a translational biomarker for early-life nociceptive processing, supporting target validation in analgesic development. This EEG-based approach enables mechanistic de-risking by quantifying central nervous system responses to peripheral stimuli, informing go/no-go decisions in preclinical analgesic screening. The method enhances predictive confidence in assessing CNS penetrance and target engagement of novel pain therapeutics during discovery.
The method integrates into early discovery workflows by providing mechanistic readouts that connect peripheral target engagement to central nervous system activity, supporting lead identification and preclinical validation stages.
