[Assessment of physical activity levels in a sample of the Italian adult population].

A cross-sectional study was performed to evaluate, amongst a sample of the Italian adult population, physical activity levels and adherence to international recommendations. Overall, 220 subjects were recruited. Study participants completed a lifestyle questionnaire after seven consecutive days of monitoring by an accelerometer. The study population was found to devote most of their time to sedentary activities, but over half of the sample reached minimum levels of physical activity recommended by the World Health Organization.

The aim of this study was to examine the interrater reliability (trained vs. untrained raters) and criterion-related validity (manual vs. automatic timing) of the 4 × 10-m shuttle run and 30-m running speed tests (times measured). The study comprised 85 adolescents (38 girls) aged 13.0-16.9 years from the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence study. The time required to complete the 4 × 10-m shuttle run and 30-m running tests was simultaneously measured (a) manually with a stopwatch by both trained and untrained raters (for interrater reliability analysis), and (b) by using photoelectric cells (for validity analysis). Systematic error, random error, and heteroscedasticity were studied with repeated-measured analysis of variance and Bland-Altman plots. The systematic error for untrained vs. trained raters and the untrained raters vs. photoelectric cells were in all cases ?0.1 seconds (p < 0.01), that is, untrained raters recorded higher times. No systematic error was found between trained raters and photoelectric cells (p > 0.05). No heteroscedasticity was shown in any case (p > 0.05). The findings indicate that manual measurements by a trained rater, using a stopwatch, seem to be a valid method to assess speed and agility fitness testing in adolescents. Researchers must be trained to minimize the measurement error.

Vitamin d status and indices of bone turnover in older European adults.

An increased rate of bone turnover increases risk of osteoporotic fracture later in life. The concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D that contributes to an elevated rate of bone turnover in older adults is unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the associations between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and biochemical markers of bone turnover in an older, pan-European cohort. 25-hydroxyvitamin D and serum markers of bone-formation (osteocalcin and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase) were assessed by ELISA, while urinary markers of bone-resorption (pyridinoline and deoxypyridinoline) were assessed by HPLC. Six percent, 36 %, and 64 % of subjects had 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations < 25, < 50, and < 80 nmol/L throughout the year, respectively. 25-hydroxyvitamin D was significantly and inversely correlated with serum bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (r = 0.119; p = 0.022) and urinary pyridinoline (r = 0.207; p < 0.0001) and deoxypyridinoline (r = 0.230; p < 0.0001). Stratification on the basis of tertiles [T] of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (< 47.6 [T(1)]; 47.6 - 85.8 [T?]; > 85.8 [T?] nmol/L), showed that urinary pyridinoline and deoxypyridinoline were significantly lower in subjects in the 2(nd) and 3(rd) compared to the 1(st) tertile (p < 0.015). Low vitamin D status (< 50 nmol/L) was associated with an increased rate of bone turnover in this older pan-European cohort.

In developing our video relationships, we compare around 5 million PubMed articles to our library of over 4,500 methods videos. In some cases the language used in the PubMed abstracts makes matching that content to a JoVE video difficult. In other cases, there happens not to be any content in our video library that is relevant to the topic of a given abstract. In these cases, our algorithms are trying their best to display videos with relevant content, which can sometimes result in matched videos with only a slight relation.
