The differences in frontal midline theta power between successful and unsuccessful basketball free throws of elite basketball players.
Int J Psychophysiol

Hide Abstract
During the preparatory period of motor skill, attention is considered as one of the most vital factors for athletic performance. Electroencephalographic (EEG) indices, such as occipital ?, have been employed to explore the psychological state during the preparatory period in elite athletes. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in frontal midline theta (Fm ?) power during the aiming period between successful and unsuccessful basketball free throws. Fifteen skilled male basketball players were recruited and asked to perform free throws. Electroencephalogram (EEG) data were collected 2seconds prior to the initiation of the free throw and segmented into four 0.5-s epochs. The lower theta (?1, 4-6Hz) and upper theta (?2, 6-8Hz) power values was contrasted between the successful and unsuccessful throws. Two 2×4×6 (performance×time×electrode) ANOVAs with repeated measures were conducted separately for ?1 and ?2 power. The results indicate that ?1 power at the Fz site and ?2 power at the Fz and the F4 sites fluctuated significantly during the preparatory period for an unsuccessful throw when compared with a successful throw. Additionally, a higher Fm ?2 power was observed at the beginning of the aiming period of a successful throw. This study suggests that a stable arousal and a relatively constant amount of attention to the task prior to motor execution may facilitate athletic performance.

Multimodal fundus imaging in fundus albipunctatus with RDH5 mutation: a newly identified compound heterozygous mutation and review of the literature.
Doc Ophthalmol
Show Abstract
Hide Abstract
The aim of this study was to describe multimodal retinal imaging of fundus albipunctatus (FA) with the newly identified compound heterozygous RDH5 mutation and to review the relevant literature. Five family members were examined, and the RDH5 gene was analyzed by direct sequencing. The clinical features and genetic study of FA are reviewed. The proband had a compound heterozygotic missense mutation of Cys59Ser (TGC ? AGC) and a nonsense mutation of Trp95ter (TGG ? TGA) in the RDH5 gene. Fundus examination revealed diffuse yellow flecks with foveal sparing. Infrared reflectance (IR) imaging showed multiple discrete round lesions, and fundus autofluorescence (FAF) imaging showed decreased autofluorescence. In spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), the lesions spanned across the retinal pigment epithelium complex and the photoreceptor inner segment ellipsoid band. The outer nuclear layer thickness is decreased compared to normal control. Electroretinography (ERG) showed improved dark-adapted responses after a prolonged 2.5-h dark adaptation. The fundi of the patients son and daughter both appeared unremarkable. The clinical findings, differential diagnosis, and genetic studies of these features are reviewed. This is the first time that IR imaging of this disease has been reported; IR imaging showed more detail than did FAF imaging. Although retinal imaging (fundus photographs, FAF, IR, SD-OCT) of FA showed characteristic findings, ERG and genetic study remain the most reliable tests for making the diagnosis.

What is Visualize?

JoVE Visualize is a tool created to match the last 5 years of PubMed publications to methods in JoVE's video library.

How does it work?

We use abstracts found on PubMed and match them to JoVE videos to create a list of 10 to 30 related methods videos.

Video X seems to be unrelated to Abstract Y...

In developing our video relationships, we compare around 5 million PubMed articles to our library of over 4,500 methods videos. In some cases the language used in the PubMed abstracts makes matching that content to a JoVE video difficult. In other cases, there happens not to be any content in our video library that is relevant to the topic of a given abstract. In these cases, our algorithms are trying their best to display videos with relevant content, which can sometimes result in matched videos with only a slight relation.
