Band gap grading and photovoltaic performance of solution-processed Cu(In,Ga)S2 thin-film solar cells.

The photophysical properties of CuInxGa1-xS2 (CIGS) thin films, prepared by solution-based coating methods, are investigated to understand the correlation between the optical properties of these films and the electrical characteristics of solar cells fabricated using these films. Photophysical properties, such as the depth-dependent band gap and carrier lifetime, turn out to be at play in determining the energy conversion efficiency of solar cells. A double grading of the band gap in CIGS films enhances solar cell efficiency, even when defect states disturb carrier collection by non-radiative decay. The combinational stacking of different density films leads to improved solar cell performance as well as efficient fabrication because a graded band gap and reduced shunt current increase carrier collection efficiency. The photodynamics of minority-carriers suggests that the suppression of defect states is a primary area of improvement in CIGS thin films prepared by solution-based methods.

The aim of this study is to present a modulation index (MI) for volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) based on the speed and acceleration analysis of modulating-parameters such as multi-leaf collimator (MLC) movements, gantry rotation and dose-rate, comprehensively. The performance of the presented MI (MIt) was evaluated with correlation analyses to the pre-treatment quality assurance (QA) results, differences in modulating-parameters between VMAT plans versus dynamic log files, and differences in dose-volumetric parameters between VMAT plans versus reconstructed plans using dynamic log files. For comparison, the same correlation analyses were performed for the previously suggested modulation complexity score (MCSv), leaf travel modulation complexity score (LTMCS) and MI by Li and Xing (MI Li&Xing). In the two-tailed unpaired parameter condition, p values were acquired. The Spearman's rho (rs) values of MIt, MCSv, LTMCS and MI Li&Xing to the local gamma passing rate with 2%/2?mm criterion were -0.658 (p < 0.001), 0.186 (p = 0.251), 0.312 (p = 0.05) and -0.455 (p = 0.003), respectively. The values of rs to the modulating-parameter (MLC positions) differences were 0.917, -0.635, -0.857 and 0.795, respectively (p < 0.001). For dose-volumetric parameters, MIt showed higher statistically significant correlations than the conventional MIs. The MIt showed good performance for the evaluation of the modulation-degree of VMAT plans.

Ascochyta rabiei and Alternaria solani, the causal agents of Ascochyta blight of chickpea (Cicer arietinum) and early blight of potato (Solanum tuberosum), respectively, produce a set of phytotoxic compounds including solanapyrones A, B, and C. Although both the phytotoxicity of solanapyrones and their universal production among field isolates have been documented, the role of solanapyrones in pathogenicity is not well understood. Here we report the functional characterization of the sol5 gene, which encodes a Diels-Alderase that catalyzes the final step of solanapyrone biosynthesis. Deletion of sol5 in both A. rabiei and Al. solani completely prevented production of solanapyrones and led to accumulation of the immediate precursor compound prosolanapyrone II-diol, which is not toxic to plants. Deletion of sol5 did not negatively affect growth rate or spore production in vitro, and led to overexpression of the other solanapyrone biosynthesis genes, suggesting a possible feedback regulation mechanism. Phytotoxicity tests showed that solanapyrone A is highly toxic to several legume species and Arabidopsis thaliana. Despite the apparent phytotoxicity of solanapyrone A, pathogenicity tests showed that solanapyrone-minus mutants of A. rabiei and Al. solani were equally virulent as their corresponding wild-type progenitors, suggesting that solanapyrones are not required for pathogenicity.

To develop a screening method to detect individuals vulnerable to bipolar disorder, the authors observed the relationship between the recovery of the normal sleep-wake cycle after switching the light-dark (LD) cycle and quinpirole-induced hyperactivity in mice.

Very little information is available regarding psychiatry in North Korea, which is based on the legacy of Soviet psychiatry. This paper reviews the characteristics of psychiatry in former socialist countries and discusses its implications for North Korean psychiatry. Under socialism, psychiatric disorders were attributed primarily to neurophysiologic or neurobiological origins. Psychosocial or psychodynamic etiology was denied or distorted in line with the political ideology of the Communist Party. Psychiatry was primarily concerned with psychotic disorders, and this diagnostic category was sometimes applied based on political considerations. Neurotic disorders were ignored by psychiatry or were regarded as the remnants of capitalism. Several neurotic disorders characterized by high levels of somatization were considered to be neurological or physical in nature. The majority of "mental patients" were institutionalized for a long periods in large-scale psychiatric hospitals. Treatment of psychiatric disorders depended largely on a few outdated biological therapies. In former socialist countries, psychodynamic psychotherapy was not common, and psychiatric patients were likely to experience social stigma. According to North Korean doctors living in South Korea, North Korean psychiatry is heavily influenced by the aforementioned traditions of psychiatry. During the post-socialist transition, the suicide rate in many of these countries dramatically increased. Given such mental health crises in post-socialist transitional societies, the field of psychiatry may face major challenges in a future unified Korea.

Background: Many comparative studies of chemical peeling and dermabrasion have been reported. However, rare basic scientific data about the immediate effects after combined treatment with chemical peeling and dermabrasion have been confirmed. Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of the application of physical abrasion in combination with chemical peels. Materials and methods: Three pigs were treated with physical abrasion using a water jet device in combination with an ?-hydroxy acid solution, and the skin samples of the control received chemical peeling solution alone. The levels of growth factors and neuropeptides were measured with a multiplex immunoassay. Result: Skin treated with physical dermabrasion combined with chemical peeling showed prominent detachment and swelling of the stratum corneum (SC), and fluid collection in the hair follicles. The mean cell count of CD34 positive fibroblasts and mast cells, levels of epidermal growth factor, fibroblast growth factor-2, vascular endothelial growth factor, and neurotensin, were significantly increased in the tissue treated with physical abrasion combined with a chemical peeling agent, compared to the skin in the control. Conclusion: We concluded that physical dermabrasion combined with chemical peeling can be more effective than chemical peeling alone, for the approach through transfollicular routes.

Influenza vaccination is important for cancer survivors, a population with impaired immunity. This study was designed to assess influenza vaccination patterns among Korean cancer survivors. In this cross-sectional analysis, data were obtained from standardized questionnaires from 943 cancer survivors and 41,233 non-cancer survivors who participated in the Fourth and Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (2007-2011). We identified the adjusted influenza vaccination rates and assessed factors associated with influenza vaccination using multivariate logistic regression. Cancer survivors tended to have a higher adjusted influenza vaccination rate than the general population. The rates for influenza vaccination in specific cancer types such as stomach, hepatic, colon, and lung cancers were significantly higher than non-cancer survivors. Among all cancer survivors, those with chronic diseases, elderly subjects, and rural dwellers were more likely to receive influenza vaccination; those with cervical cancer were less likely to receive influenza vaccination. Cancer survivors were more likely to receive influenza vaccinations than non-cancer survivors, but this was not true for particular groups, especially younger cancer survivors. Cancer survivors represent a sharply growing population; therefore, immunization against influenza among cancer survivors should be concerned as their significant preventative healthcare services.

Emerging evidence suggests that RANKL-induced changes in chromatin state are important for osteoclastogenesis, but these epigenetic mechanisms are not well understood and have not been therapeutically targeted. In this study, we find that the small molecule I-BET151 that targets bromo and extra-terminal (BET) proteins that 'read' chromatin states by binding to acetylated histones strongly suppresses osteoclastogenesis. I-BET151 suppresses pathologic bone loss in TNF-induced inflammatory osteolysis, inflammatory arthritis and post-ovariectomy models. Transcriptome analysis identifies a MYC-NFAT axis important for osteoclastogenesis. Mechanistically, I-BET151 inhibits expression of the master osteoclast regulator NFATC1 by suppressing expression and recruitment of its newly identified upstream regulator MYC. MYC is elevated in rheumatoid arthritis macrophages and its induction by RANKL is important for osteoclastogenesis and TNF-induced bone resorption. These findings highlight the importance of an I-BET151-inhibited MYC-NFAT axis in osteoclastogenesis, and suggest targeting epigenetic chromatin regulators holds promise for treatment of inflammatory and oestrogen deficiency-mediated pathologic bone resorption.

Nongestational ovarian choriocarcinoma is an exceedingly rare and highly aggressive tumor. Although early diagnosis and timely initiation of therapy is important, it is difficult in reproductive aged patients because of the frequent elevation of human chorionic gonadotropin. We report a primarily nongestational ovarian choriocarcinoma in a 12-year-old virgin female. Initial diagnosis based on abdominopelvic computed tomography and pelvis magnetic resonance imaging was ectopic pregnancy with hemoperitoneum. A diagnostic laparoscopy of the ovarian tumor revealed choriocarcinoma. Unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and omental sampling revealed surgical stage of IA. Six courses of adjuvant combination chemotherapy (bleomycin, etoposide, and cisplatin) followed surgery.

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) can cause various ocular motor disorders in addition to optic neuritis. Ocular motor findings associated with NMOSD include spontaneous vertical and gaze-evoked nystagmus, wall-eyed bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia, and trochlear nerve palsy. The association between dorsal midbrain syndrome and anti-aquaporin-4 antibody seropositivity has not been reported. Here, we report a patient displaying typical dorsal midbrain syndrome and anti-aquaporin-4 antibody seropositivity.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been used for analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antithrombotic actions and recently for cancer prevention, but they carries a risk of major gastroduodenal damages from symptomatic ulcers to serious complications leading to fatal outcomes. Therefore, the novel strategies to rescue long-term NSAID requiring patients from NSAID-associated gastroduodenal damages are essential. Besides of current drugs based on classic damaging mechanisms attributable to the decline of gastric mucosal prostaglandin synthesis, reductions of mucosal blood flow, attenuated bicarbonate secretion and mucus synthesis related with prostaglandin levels, effective therapeutics targeted for update mechanisms of NSAID-induced gastroduodenal damages are introduced in this paper based on recent advances in basic science and biotechnology exploring deeper molecular mechanisms of NSAID-induced gastroduodenal damage beyond COX inhibition.

Molecular imaging in gastroenterology has become more feasible with recent advances in imaging technology, molecular genetics, and next-generation biochemistry, in addition to advances in endoscopic imaging techniques including magnified high-resolution endoscopy, narrow band imaging or autofluorescence imaging, flexible spectral imaging color enhancement, and confocal laser endomicroscopy. These developments have the potential to serve as "red flag" techniques enabling the earlier and accurate detection of mucosal abnormalities (such as precancerous lesions) beyond biomarkers, virtual histology of detected lesions, and molecular targeted therapy-the strategy of "one stone to kill two or three birds"; however, more effort should be done to be "blue ocean" benefit. This review deals with the introduction of Raman spectroscopy endoscopy, imaging mass spectroscopy, and nanomolecule development for theranostics. Imaging of molecular pathological changes in cells/tissues/organs might open the "royal road" to either convincing diagnosis of diseases that otherwise would only be detected in the advanced stages or novel therapeutic methods targeted to personalized medicine.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the most common movement neurodegenerative movement disorder. An incomplete understanding of the molecular pathways involved in its pathogenesis impedes the development of effective disease-modifying treatments. To address this gap, we have previously generated a Drosophila model of PD that overexpresses PD pathogenic mutant form of the second most common causative gene of PD, Leucine-Rich Repeat Kinase 2 (LRRK2).

Direct evidence for the blue luminescence of gold nanoclusters encapsulated inside hydroxyl-terminated polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers was provided by spectroscopic studies as well as by theoretical calculations. Steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic studies showed that the luminescence of the gold nanoclusters consisted largely of two electronic transitions. Theoretical calculations indicate that the two transitions are attributed to the different sizes of the gold nanoclusters (Au8 and Au13). The luminescence of the gold nanoclusters was clearly distinguished from that of the dendrimers.

A Gram-stain-positive, polar flagella-containing, rod-shaped, obligate aerobic, endospore-forming bacterium, strain TK1655(T), was isolated from the traditional Korean food gochujang. The 16S rRNA sequence of strain TK1655(T) was a member of the genus Oceanobacillus similar to that of the type strain of Oceanobacillus oncorhynchi subsp. incaldanensis DSM 16557(T) (97.2%), O. oncorhynchi subsp. oncorhynchi JCM 12661(T) (97.1%), O. locisalsi KCTC 13253(T) (97.0%), and O. sojae JCM 15792(T) (96.9%). Strain TK1655(T) was oxidase and catalase positive. Colonies were circular, smooth, low convex, cream in colour, and measured about 0.5-1.0 mm in diameter. The range for growth was 20-40°C (optimal, 30°C), pH 6.0-10.0 (optimal, 7.0), and 2-16% (w/v) NaCl (optimal, 2%). Additionally, the cells contained meso-DAP, and the predominant isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. The complex polar lipids were consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG), phosphatidylglycerol (PG), phosphatidylcholine (PC). The major cellular fatty acid components were iso-C15:0, anteiso-C15:0, iso-C16:0, and anteiso-C17:0, and the DNA G+C content was 40.5%. DNA-DNA relatedness of our novel strain and reference strain O. locisalsi KCTC 13253(T), O. oncorhynchi subsp. incaldanensis DSM 16557(T), O. oncorhynchi subsp. oncorhynchi JCM 12661(T) was 45.7, 43.8, and 41.9%. From the results of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, and phylogenetic analyses of strain TK1655(T), we propose the novel species Oceanobacillus gochujangensis sp. nov. The type strain is TK1655(T) (=KCCM 101304(T) =KCTC 33014(T) =CIP 110582(T) =NBRC 109637(T)).

Brunner gland hyperplasia, a rare duodenal tumor, usually presents with benign features. A 68-year-old man with a history of anemia presented with a polypoid duodenal mass that was detected by CT and esophagogastroduodenoscopy. This mass showed high F-FDG avidity on PET/CT and was histopathologically confirmed as Brunner gland hyperplasia. We suggest that Brunner gland hyperplasia should be considered in the differential diagnosis of F-FDG-avid duodenal tumors.

Background: Multiple hypointense vessels (MHV) on susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) are frequently observed in patients with acute cerebral ischemia, but their implication has not been clearly established. To elucidate the clinical significance of MHV on SWI, we investigated the association of MHV on SWI with clinical data and other MR markers in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Methods: We enrolled acute stroke patients with internal carotid or proximal middle cerebral artery occlusion who underwent MRI including SWI within 3 days from stroke onset. Baseline clinical data were reviewed. Stroke severity was measured by the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). We graded the degree of MHV on SWI as four groups of none, subtle, relative, or extensive by the modified Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Scan (ASPECTS) system. To evaluate the degree of collateral flow, distal hyperintense vessels (DHV) on FLAIR and vessels on post-contrast time-of-flight MR angiography (TOF MRA) source images were graded respectively as 3 groups: none/subtle/prominent and poor/moderate/good. Diffusion and perfusion lesion volume and diffusion-perfusion mismatch (DPM) ratio were measured in all patients. We analyzed the association of the degree of MHV on SWI with clinical data and MR markers. Results: Eighty patients were included in the study. The mean MR time from stroke onset was 12.4 h (range 0.5-63.0). There is no difference in MR time from stroke onset between groups of MHV on SWI. MHV were observed in 68 (85%) of 80 patients: none in 12, subtle in 11, relative in 13, and extensive in 44. There were no statistically significant associations between MHV on SWI and vascular risk factors. Patients with more extensive MHV on SWI had a smaller diffusion volume (p < 0.001), larger DPM (p < 0.001), and lower initial NIHSS scores (p = 0.022). Prominent DHV was presented in 29 of 44 patients with extensive MHV (p < 0.001). Good collateral flow on TOF MRA source images was presented in 37 of 44 patients with extensive MHV (p < 0.001). Conclusions: More extensive MHV on SWI in acute ischemic stroke is associated with lower initial NIHSS scores, smaller diffusion lesion volume, better collateral flow, and larger DPM. Our results show the possibility that MHV on SWI may be a useful surrogate marker for predicting increased oxygen extraction fraction and diffusion-perfusion mismatch in acute ischemic hemisphere. © 2014 S. Recent advances in optical molecular imaging allow identification of morphologic and biochemical changes in tissues associated with gastrointestinal (GI) premalignant lesions earlier and in real-time. This focused review series introduces high-resolution imaging modalities that are being evaluated preclinically and clinically for the detection of early GI cancers, especially Barrett esophagus and esophageal adenocarcinoma. Although narrow band imaging, autofluorescence imaging, and chromoendoscopy are currently applied for this purpose in the clinic, further adoptions of probe-based confocal laser endomicroscopy, high-resolution microendoscopy, optical coherence tomography, and metabolomic imaging, as well as imaging mass spectrometry, will lead to detection at the earliest and will guide predictions of the clinical course in the near future in a manner that is beyond current advancements in optical imaging. In this review article, the readers will be introduced to sufficient information regarding this matter with which to enjoy this new era of high technology and to confront science in the field of molecular medical imaging.

A novel mutation of TMPRSS3 related to milder auditory phenotype in Korean postlingual deafness: a possible future implication for a personalized auditory rehabilitation.

Appropriate customized auditory rehabilitation for hearing impaired subjects requires prediction of residual hearing and progression of hearing loss. Mutations in TMPRSS3 encoding a transmembrane serine protease were reported to be associated with two different autosomal recessive nonsyndromic hearing loss (arNSHL) phenotypes, DFNB8 and DFNB10, in terms of residual hearing that may mandate different rehabilitation. We aimed to reveal the genetic contribution of TMPRSS3 mutations among Korean populations and to correlate the clinical phenotype with TMPRSS3 genotypes. Fifty families that segregated arNSHL and have visited our clinic recently for 2 years were recruited for TMPRSS3 screening. Novel TMPRSS3 variants detected in our cohort were modeled using a predicted three-dimensional (3D) structure of the serine protease domain. The prevalence reached up to 11.2 % (3/27) among subjects with either prelingual hearing loss but retaining some degree of language development or with postlingual ski-slope hearing loss. We also found that a p.A306T allele is a founder allele in this population. Based upon the 3D modeling, we were able to correlate significant retention of residual low-frequency hearing and slower progression of its loss to this novel variant p.T248M that was predicted to have milder pathogenicity. A yeast-based protease assay confirmed a mild pathogenic potential of the p.T248M variant and a tight correlation between the protease activity and the residual hearing. Preservation of this low-frequency hearing should be of utmost importance when considering auditory rehabilitation. Our results significantly narrow down the candidate population for TMPRSS3 sequencing for more efficient genetic diagnosis. More importantly, genotype-phenotype correlation of this gene observed in our cohort suggests that TMPRSS3 can be an appropriate candidate for personalized and customized auditory rehabilitation.

Doxycycline is the standard systemic treatment for rosacea. Recently, there have been a few reports on ?-adrenergic blockers such as nadolol, carvedilol and propranolol for suppressing flushing reactions in rosacea. To our knowledge, there are no comparative studies of propranolol and doxycycline, and combination therapy using both. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the efficacy and safety of monotherapy of propranolol, doxycycline and combination therapy. A total of 78 patients who visited Pusan National University Hospital and were diagnosed with rosacea were included in this study. Among them, 28 patients were in the propranolol group, 22 the doxycycline group and 28 the combination group. We investigated the patient global assessment (PGA), investigator global assessment (IGA), assessment of rosacea clinical score (ARCS) and adverse effects. Improvement in PGA and IGA scores from baseline was noted in all groups, and the combination therapy was found to be the most effective during the entire period, but this was statistically insignificant. The reduction rate of ARCS during the treatment period was also highest in the combination group (57.4%), followed by the doxycycline group (52.2%) and the propranolol group (51.0%). Three patients in the combination group had mild and transient gastrointestinal disturbances but there was no significant difference from the other groups. We conclude that the combination therapy of doxycycline and propranolol is effective and safe treatment for rosacea and successful for reducing both flushing and papulation in particular.

Since several studies have inconsistently reported the association between the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and the risk of stroke, we performed a meta-analysis on this issue. We identified studies by searching three electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library) from their inception to August, 2013. Pooled effect estimates were obtained by using random-effects meta-analysis. Thirteen relevant studies (three case-control, six nested case-control, and four cohort studies) were finally included in our study. In our meta-analyses, the use of SSRIs was associated with an increased risk of all types of stroke [adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 1.40; 95 % confidence interval (CI), 1.09-1.80], ischemic stroke (aOR 1.48; 95 % CI 1.08-2.02), and hemorrhagic stroke (aOR 1.32; 95 % CI 1.02-1.71). Between the two subtypes of hemorrhagic stroke, that is, intracerebral and subarachnoid, the increased risk of intracerebral hemorrhage was associated with the use of SSRIs (aOR 1.30; 95 % CI 1.02-1.67). When the analysis was restricted to the studies in which potential confounding by depression was considered, the risks were still higher in SSRI users than in non-users and the heterogeneities among studies were significantly decreased. Since there was heterogeneity among studies and a possible confounding effect from depression could not be fully excluded, further well-designed studies are needed to confirm this association.

Macrophage death plays a role in several physiological and inflammatory pathologies such as sepsis and arthritis. In our previous work, we showed that simvastatin triggers cell death in LPS-activated RAW 264.7 mouse macrophage cells through both caspase-dependent and independent apoptotic pathways. Here, we show that the nuclear orphan receptor NR4A1 is involved in a caspase-independent apoptotic process induced by LPS and simvastatin. Simvastatin-induced NR4A1 expression in RAW 264.7 macrophages and ectopic expression of a dominant-negative mutant form of NR4A1 effectively suppressed both DNA fragmentation and the disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) during LPS- and simvastatin-induced apoptosis. Furthermore, apoptosis was accompanied by Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax) translocation to the mitochondria. Our findings suggest that NR4A1 expression and mitochondrial translocation of Bax are related to simvastatin-induced apoptosis in LPS-activated RAW 264.7 macrophages.

This study aims to evaluate the potential jaw-tracking advantage using control point sequences of volume volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) planning. VMAT plans for patients with prostate and head and neck (H&N) cancers were converted into new static arc (SA) plans. The SA plan consisted of a series of static fields at each control point of the VMAT plan. All other machine parameters of the SA plan were perfectly identical to those of the original VMAT plan. The jaw-tracking static arc (JTSA) plans were generated with fields that closed the jaws of each SA field into the multileaf collimators (MLCs) aperture. The dosimetric advantages of JTSA over SA were evaluated in terms of a dose-volume histogram (DVH) of organ at risk (OAR) after renormalizing both plans to make the same target coverage. Both plans were delivered to the MatriXX-based COMPASS system for 3D volume dose verification. The average jaw size reduction of the JTSA along the X direction was 3.1 ± 0.9 cm for prostate patients and 6.9 ± 1.9 cm for H&N patients. For prostate patients, the organs far from the target showed larger sparing (3.7%-8.1% on average) in JTSA than the organs adjacent to the target (1.1%-1.5%). For the H&N plans, the mean dose reductions for all organs ranged from 4.3% to 11.9%. The dose reductions were more significant in the dose regions of D80, D90, and D95 than the dose regions of D5, D10, and D20 for all patients. Likewise, the deliverability and reproducibility of jaw-tracking plan were validated. The measured dosimetric advantage of JTSA over SA coincided with the calculated one above.

Nuclear inclusion a (NIa) of turnip mosaic virus is a cytosolic protease that cleaves amyloid ? (A?) when heterologously overexpressed. Lentivirus-mediated expression of NIa in the brains of APP(sw)/PS1 mice significantly reduces cerebral A? levels and plaque depositions, and improves behavioral deficits. Here, the effects of NIa and neprilysin (NEP), a well-known A?-cleaving protease, on oligomeric A?-induced cell death were evaluated. NIa cleaved monomeric and oligomeric A? at a similar rate, whereas NEP only cleaved monomeric A?. Oligomeric A?-induced cytotoxicity and mitochondrial dysfunction were significantly ameliorated by NIa, but not by NEP. Endocytosed fluorescently-labeled A? localized to mitochondria, and this was significantly reduced by NIa, but not by NEP. These data suggest that NIa may exerts its protective roles by degrading A? and thus preventing mitochondrial deposition of A?.

Few studies performed so far have weighed the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of cancer survivors against that of cardiovascular disease (CVD) survivors. This study was based on data obtained from the Third Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Of adults with available EuroQoL (EQ) information, a total 23 370 individuals (658 CVD survivors, 389 cancer survivors, and 22 323 controls) remained in the final analysis. Cancer survivors have the lowest HRQoL scales among the 3 groups, independent of age. The HRQoL of young cancer survivors was as impaired as that of older cancer survivors, whereas the HRQoL of CVD survivors and controls decreased with increasing age. Cancer survivors also have more problems in all domains of EQ-5D, especially domains of pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression. The study suggests that cancer survivors should receive more intensive attention to develop means of identifying them and to improve their quality of life.

Amiodarone is a di-iodated benzofuran derivative that is commonly used to treat patients with various cardiac arrhythmias. It is associated with side effects that involve the liver, thyroid, and other organs. Approximately 1-3% of patients treated with amiodarone suffer from symptomatic liver disease. Thyroid dysfunction occurs in 10% of patients treated with amiodarone. A 65-year-old woman with coronary heart disease and atrial fibrillation was administered with amiodarone. She developed nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, and sweating within 9 months of amiodarone administration (200 mg orally once a day). Results of the laboratory finding showed increased hepatic enzymes, and low thyroid hormone levels. A liver biopsy showed irregular arrangement of hepatocytes and diffuse micro- and macrovesicular fatty changes. Electron microscopy findings showed pleomorphic mitochondria with crystalloid inclusions and membrane-bound lysosomal structures. The liver and thyroid functions returned to normal, after the amiodarone was stopped. We describe an unusual case in which amiodarone induced hepatitis and hypothyroidism simultaneously. Physicians should take a close look to the adverse event when using amiodarone which can cause adverse effects in multiple organs.

A series of O-aryl- and alkyl-substituted phosphorodithioates were designed and synthesized as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) donors. H2S releasing capability of these compounds was evaluated using fluorescence methods. O-aryl substituted donors showed slow and sustained H2S release while O-alkylated compounds showed very weak H2S releasing capability. We also evaluated donors protective effects against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative damage in myocytes and donors toxicity toward B16BL6 mouse melanoma cells.

Protein S-sulfhydration (forming -S-SH adducts from cysteine residues) is a newly defined oxidative posttranslational modification and plays an important role in H2 S-mediated signaling pathways. In this study we report the first selective, "tag-switch" method which can directly label protein S-sulfhydrated residues by forming stable thioether conjugates. Furthermore we demonstrate that H2 S alone cannot lead to S-sulfhydration and that the two possible physiological mechanisms include reaction with protein sulfenic acids (P-SOH) or the involvement of metal centers which would facilitate the oxidation of H2 S to HS(.) .

Negative regulation of osteoclastogenesis is important for bone homeostasis and prevention of excessive bone resorption in inflammatory and other diseases. Mechanisms that directly suppress osteoclastogenesis are not well understood. In this study we investigated regulation of osteoclast differentiation by the ?2 integrin CD11b/CD18 that is expressed on myeloid lineage osteoclast precursors. CD11b-deficient mice exhibited decreased bone mass that was associated with increased osteoclast numbers and decreased bone formation. Accordingly, CD11b and ?2 integrin signaling suppressed osteoclast differentiation by preventing receptor activator of NF-?B ligand (RANKL)-induced induction of the master regulator of osteoclastogenesis nuclear factor of activated T cells, cytoplasmic 1 (NFATc1) and of downstream osteoclast-related NFATc1 target genes. CD11b suppressed induction of NFATc1 by the complementary mechanisms of downregulation of RANK expression and induction of recruitment of the transcriptional repressor B-cell lymphoma 6 (BCL6) to the NFATC1 gene. These findings identify CD11b as a negative regulator of the earliest stages of osteoclast differentiation, and provide an inducible mechanism by which environmental cues suppress osteoclastogenesis by activating a transcriptional repressor that makes genes refractory to osteoclastogenic signaling.

BACKGROUND: Because of the rarity of duodenal adenocarcinoma, little is known regarding its natural history or prognostic factors for survival. We therefore evaluated surgical treatment, and prognostic factors for survival in patients with duodenal adenocarcinoma. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who were diagnosed with duodenal adenocarcinoma at Asan Medical Center between December 1999 and December 2009. RESULTS: Of the 76 patients, 47 (61%) underwent surgery with curative intent and 29 (39%) underwent palliative operation. Of the former, 25 underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD), 19 underwent pylorus-preserving PD, 2 underwent segmental duodenectomy and 1 underwent transduodenal excision. The median survival of the 41 patients who achieved R0 resection was 25.1 months (range 4-134 months), with overall 1-, 3- and 5-year survival rates of 80.4%, 63.4% and 60.9%, respectively. Median survival was significantly longer in patients who underwent curative resection than in those who underwent palliative surgery (28.2 versus 6.6 months, P < 0.001). Univariate analysis showed that transfusion and lymph node metastasis were related to survival, and multivariate analysis revealed that lymph node metastasis was independently associated with survival (P = 0.036). Survival differences were observed between stages of the seventh edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system. CONCLUSION: In the absence of distant metastasis, curative resection enhances the long-term survival of patients with duodenal adenocarcinoma. Lymph node metastasis is prognostic factor of overall survival.

Interplay between calcium ions (Ca(2+)) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) delicately controls diverse pathophysiological functions of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). However, details of the Ca(2+) and ROS signaling network have been hindered by the absence of a method for dual measurement of Ca(2+) and ROS. Here, a real-time monitoring system for Ca(2+) and ROS was established using a genetically encoded hydrogen peroxide indicator, HyPer, and a ratiometric Ca(2+) indicator, fura-2. For the simultaneous detection of fura-2 and HyPer signals, 540 nm emission filter and 500 nm~ dichroic beamsplitter were combined with conventional exciters. The wide excitation spectrum of HyPer resulted in marginal cross-contamination with fura-2 signal. However, physiological Ca(2+) transient and hydrogen peroxide were practically measurable in HyPer-expressing, fura-2-loaded VSMCs. Indeed, distinct Ca(2+) and ROS signals could be successfully detected in serotonin-stimulated VSMCs. The system established in this study is applicable to studies of crosstalk between Ca(2+) and ROS. [BMB Reports 2013; 46(12): 600-605].

This single-blind, prospective, randomized controlled trial was designed to evaluate the effects of a culturally responsive health promotion program for elderly Korean (CHP-K) survivors of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. The program consisted of 8 weeks of Qi exercise and face-to-face counseling on physical and psychological factors. A total of 63 Korean GI cancer survivors, aged ?65 years, who had completed their active cancer treatment, were recruited from a cancer center in South Korea. Outcomes included the amount of exercise, body weight, BMI, the Patient Generated Subjective Global Assessment scale, the M.D. Anderson Symptom Inventory, and self-efficacy and self-esteem scales. Repeated measures MANCOVA revealed a significant difference over time between the groups (Wilks Lambda F1,62 = 5.361, p = 0.007). Univariate RM-ANCOVA for each outcome measure revealed statistically significant differences between groups. These results suggested that the participation in the CHP-K may have enhanced the health of elderly Korean GI cancer survivors.

An 86-year-old female with a history of right rotator cuff injury was admitted for arthroscopic shoulder surgery under general anesthesia. There were no remarkable immediate postoperative complications. However, while recovering in the general ward, she developed dyspnea with hypoxia. She was immediately treated with oxygen, and antibiotics after pneumomediastinum was confirmed on both chest x-ray and chest computed tomography. Subcutaneous emphysema on either face or neck followed by arthroscopic shoulder surgery was common, but pneumomediastinum with hypoxia is a rare but extremely dangerous complication. Thus we would like to report our case and its pathology, the diagnosis, the treatment and prevention, with literature review.

In this study, mercury (Hg) leaching characteristics of the waste treatment residues (fly ash, bottom ash, sludge, and phosphor powder) generated from various sources (municipal, industrial, medical waste incinerators, sewage sludge incinerator, oil refinery, coal-fired power plant, steel manufacturing plant, fluorescent lamp recycler, and cement kiln) in Korea were investigated. First, both Hg content analysis and toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) testing was conducted for 31 collected residue samples. The Hg content analysis showed that fly ash from waste incinerators contained more Hg than the other residue samples. However, the TCLP values of fly ash samples with similar Hg content varied widely based on the residue type. Fly ash samples with low and high Hg leaching ratios (RL) were further analyzed to identify the major factors that influence the Hg leaching potential. Buffering capacity of the low-RL fly ash was higher than that of the high-RL fly ash. The Hg speciation results suggest that the low-RL fly ashes consisted primarily of low-solubility Hg compounds (Hg2Cl2, Hg(0) or HgS), whereas the high-RL fly ashes contain more than 20% high-solubility Hg compounds (HgCl2 or HgSO4).

In other cases, there happens not to be any content in our video library that is relevant to the topic of a given abstract. In these cases, our algorithms are trying their best to display videos with relevant content, which can sometimes result in matched videos with only a slight relation.
