Informatics competencies are a necessity for contemporary nurses. However, few researchers have investigated informatics competencies for practicing nurses. A full set of Informatics competencies, an instrument to measure these competencies, and potential influencing factors have yet to be identified for practicing nurses. The Nursing Informatics Competencies Questionnaire was designed, tested for psychometrics, and used to measure beginning and experienced levels of practice. A pilot study using 54 nurses ensured item comprehension and clarity. Internal consistency and face and content validity were established. A cross-sectional survey was then conducted on 230 nurses in Seoul, Korea, to determine construct validity, describe a complete set of informatics competencies, and explore possible influencing factors on existing informatics competencies. Principal componentsanalysis, descriptive statistics, and multiple regression were used for data analysis. Principal components analysis gives support for the Nursing Informatics Competencies Questionnaire construct validity. Survey results indicate that involvement in a managerial position and self-directed informatics-related education may be more influential for improving informatics competencies, whereas general clinical experience and workplace settings are not. This study provides a foundation for understanding how informatics competencies might be integrated throughout nurses' work lives and how to develop appropriate strategies to support nurses in their informatics practice in clinical settings.

Human chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 (hCCL2) is a small cytokine in the CC chemokine family that attracts monocytes, memory T lymphocytes, and natural killer cells to the site of tissue injury- or infection-induced inflammation. hCCL2 has been implicated in the pathogeneses of diseases characterized by monocytic infiltrates, including psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, multiple sclerosis, and insulin-resistant diabetes. The prokaryotic overexpression of hCCL2 has been investigated previously in an attempt to develop biomedical applications for this factor, but this has been hampered by protein misfolding and aggregation into inclusion bodies. In our present study, we screened 7 protein tags-Trx, GST, MBP, NusA, His8, PDI, and PDIb'a'-for their ability to allow the soluble overexpression of hCCL2. Three tags-MBP, His8, and PDI-solubilized more than half of the expressed hCCL2 fusion proteins. Lowering the expression temperature to 18 °C significantly further improved the solubility of all fusion proteins. MBP was chosen for further study based on its solubility, expression level, ease of purification, and tag size. MBP-CCL2 was purified using conventional chromatography and cleaved using TEV or Factor Xa proteases. Biological activity was assessed using luciferase and cell migration assays. Factor Xa-cleaved hCCL2 was found to be active and TEV-cleaved hCCL2 showed relatively less activity. This is probably because the additional glycine residues present at the N-terminus of hCCL2 following TEV digestion interfere with the binding of hCCL2 to its receptor.

Variable sizes of nanoparticles, ranging from nano to micro scale, are of toxicological interest. In the present study, the authors hypothesized that, in addition to the size, the shape of iron oxide (Fe2 O3 ) nanoparticles is a major factor that contributes to particle cytotoxicity. Cytotoxicity to mouse macrophage cells (RAW 264.7) was investigated using 3 different particles: micro-sized Fe2 O3 (M-Fe2 O3 ), nano-sized Fe2 O3 (N-Fe2 O3 ), and rod-shaped Fe2 O3 (R-Fe2 O3 ). Whereas M-Fe2 O3 and N-Fe2 O3 were located in the vacuole as aggregates, R-Fe2 O3 was often spread throughout the cytoplasm. The extent of cytotoxicity measured by the water soluble tetrazolium (WST-1) assay was in the order R-Fe2 O3 ???N-Fe2 O3? >?M-Fe2 O3 , whereas the extent revealed by the lactate dehydrogenase assay was in the order R-Fe2 O3 > N-Fe2 O3 ???M-Fe2 O3 . In addition, the degree of tumor necrosis factor-? and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was in the order of R-Fe2 O3 ?>?N-Fe2 O3? >?M-Fe2 O3 . In addition, a much higher extent of necrosis was associated with the presence of R-Fe2 O3 . These results suggest that the higher degree of necrosis due to R-Fe2 O3 is correlated with both the higher degree of membrane damage and ROS production by R-Fe2 O3 compared with the results of the other Fe2 O3 particles. These results also showed that the degree of cytotoxicity of nanoparticles should be evaluated based on shape as well as size, because changes in shape and size are accompanied by alterations in surface area, which relate closely to cytotoxicity. Genomic Alterations in the RB Pathway Indicate Prognostic Outcomes of Early-Stage Lung Adenocarcinoma.

Purpose: To better understand the complete genomic architecture of lung adenocarcinoma (LA). Experimental Design: We used array experiments to determine copy number variations and sequenced the complete exomes of the 247 LA tumor samples along with matched normal cells obtained from the same patients. Fully annotated clinical data were also available, providing an unprecedented opportunity to assess the impact of genomic alterations on clinical outcomes. Results: We discovered that genomic alternations in the RB pathway are associated with significantly shorter disease-free survival in early-stage LA patients. This association was also observed in our independent validation cohort. The current treatment guidelines for early-stage LA patients recommend follow-up without adjuvant therapy after complete resection, except for high-risk patients. However, our findings raise the interesting possibility that additional clinical interventions might provide medical benefits to early-stage LA patients with genomic alterations in the RB pathway. When examining the association between genomic mutation and histological subtype, we uncovered the characteristic genomic signatures of various histological subtypes. Notably, the solid and the micropapillary subtypes demonstrated great diversity in the mutated genes, while the mucinous subtype exhibited the most unique landscape. This suggests that a more tailored therapeutic approach should be used to treat LA patients. Conclusion: Our analysis of the genomic and clinical data for 247 LAs should help provide a more comprehensive genomic portrait of LA, define molecular signatures of LA subtypes, and lead to the discovery of useful prognostic markers that could be used in personalized treatments for early-stage LA patients.

Acaricidal Activity of Constituents Derived from Peppermint Oil against Tyrophagus putrescentiae.

The acaricidal activities of peppermint oil and menthol isomers against mites in stored food were evaluated using fumigant and contact bioassays and were compared with the activity of benzyl benzoate as a synthetic acaricide. Based on the 50% lethal dose (LD50) values against Tyrophagus putrescentiae in the fumigant bioassay, menthol (0.96 ?g/cm(2)) was approximately 12.18 times more effective than benzyl benzoate (11.70 ?g/cm(2)), followed by (+)-neomenthol (1.33 ?g/cm(2)), (-)-menthol (1.60 ?g/cm(2)), and (+)-menthol (1.90 ?g/cm(2)). In the filter paper bioassay, menthol (0.55 ?g/cm(2)) was about 15.18 times more active than benzyl benzoate (8.35 ?g/cm(2)), followed by (-)-menthol (0.84 ?g/cm(2)), (+)-menthol (0.92 ?g/cm(2)), and (+)-neomenthol (1.72 ?g/cm(2)). However, (+)-isomenthol did not exhibit any acaricidal activity against T. putrescentiae in the fumigant and filter paper bioassays. These results indicate that peppermint oil and menthol isomers could be effective natural acaricides for managing mites in stored food.

The acaricidal activities of an active material derived from Rosmarinus officinalis oil and its relative monoterpene ketones were determined using fumigant and contact toxicity bioassays against Tyrophagus putrescentiae and were compared with that of a commercial acaricide (benzyl benzoate). The active component of R. officinalis oil, isolated by silica gel column chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography, was identified as camphor, based on various spectroscopic analyses. In the fumigant toxicity bioassay, camphor (2.25 ?g/cm(3)) was 5.58 times more active than benzyl benzoate (12.56 ?g/cm(3)) against T. putrescentiae, followed by (+)-camphor (3.89 ?g/cm(3)) and (-)-camphor (5.61 ?g/cm(3)). In the contact toxicity bioassay, camphor (1.34 ?g/cm(2)) was 6.74 times more toxic than benzyl benzoate (9.03 ?g/cm(2)) against T. putrescentiae, followed by (+)-camphor (2.23 ?g/cm(2)) and (-)-camphor (2.94 ?g/cm(2)). These results indicate that camphor and its derivatives are very useful as potential control agents against stored food mites regardless of the application method.

In Korea, soy (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) leaves are eaten as a seasonal vegetable or pickled in soy sauce. Ethyl acetate extracts of soy leaves (EASL) are enriched in pterocarpans and have potent ?-glucosidase inhibitory activity. This study investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying the anti-diabetic effect of EASL in C57BL/6J mice with high-fat diet (HFD)-induced type 2 diabetes. Mice were randomly divided into normal diet (ND), HFD (60 kcal% fat diet), EASL (HFD with 0.56% (wt/wt) EASL), and Pinitol (HFD with 0.15% (wt/wt) pinitol) groups. Weight gain and abdominal fat accumulation were significantly suppressed by EASL. Levels of plasma glucose, HbA1c, and insulin in the EASL group were significantly lower than those of the HFD group, and the pancreatic islet of the EASL group had greater size than those of the HFD group. EASL group up-regulated neurogenin 3 (Ngn3), paired box 4 (Pax4), and v-maf musculoaponeurotic fibrosarcoma oncogene homolog A (MafA), which are markers of pancreatic cell development, as well as insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS1), IRS2, and glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4), which are related to insulin sensitivity. Furthermore, EASL suppressed genes involved in hepatic gluconeogenesis and steatosis. These results suggest that EASL improves plasma glucose and insulin levels in mice with HDF-induced type 2 diabetes by regulating ?-cell proliferation and insulin sensitivity.

While the prevalence of metabolic syndrome is increasing, little is presently known about this syndrome in Korean elderly. This study aimed to group metabolic risk factors and to examine the associations between groups of health living conditions and metabolic syndrome using data from the Korean National Health Examination and Nutritional Assessment (KNHANES). A total of 1,435 subjects aged over 65 years old with both biochemical and dietary data information were obtained from the 4th and 5th KNHANES (2007¿2012). Using stratified and multistage probability sample data, five components of metabolic syndrome were adopted to identify health inequalities. Our findings show that groups of health living conditions such as dietary pattern, body image, muscle mass, and fat mass were differentially associated with metabolic syndrome risk factors. Future studies are necessary to examine the underlying mechanisms of individual health living conditions to better understand the role of metabolic risk factors in metabolic syndrome in elderly.

The acaricidal and insecticidal potential of the active constituent isolated from Citrullus colocynthis fruits and its structurally related analogues was evaluated by performing leaf disk, contact toxicity, and fumigant toxicity bioassays against Tetranychus urticae, Sitophilus oryzae, and Sitophilus zeamais adults. The active constituent of C. colocynthis fruits was isolated by chromatographic techniques and was identified as 4-methylquinoline on the basis of spectroscopic analyses. To investigate the structure-activity relationships, 4-methylquinoline and its structural analogues were tested against mites and two insect pests. On the basis of the LC50 values, 7,8-benzoquinoline was the most effective against T. urticae. Quinoline, 8-hydroxyquinoline, 2-methylquinoline, 4-methylquinoline, 6-methylquinoline, 8-methylquinoline, and 7,8-benzoquinoline showed high insecticidal activities against S. oryzae and S. zeamais regardless of the application method. These results indicate that introduction of a functional group into the quinoline skeleton and changing the position of the group have an important influence on the acaricidal and insecticidal activities. Furthermore, 4-methylquinoline isolated from C. colocynthis fruits, along with its structural analogues, could be effective natural pesticides for managing spider mites and stored grain weevils.

Protuberant Fibro-osseous Lesions of the Temporal Bone: Two Additional Case Reports.

The most commonly encountered fibro-osseous lesions of the skull bone are fibrous dysplasia and ossifying fibroma. Two cases of a unique "protuberant fibro-osseous lesion of the temporal bone" were first described by Selesnick and colleagues in 1999, and 2 further cases were reported in 2010 under the name "Bullough lesion". We recently found 2 new cases of this rare entity. Two Korean female patients aged 70 and 54 years presented with slow growing postauricular masses without pain or tenderness for 6 and 7 years, respectively. Computed tomography revealed a 2.9 cm calcified mass in the temporal bone of the first patient, and a 5.5 cm enhancing mass with internal cartilaginous matrix in the temporal bone of the second patient. Intramedullary or intracranial extension was not found in either case, and en bloc removals were performed. Microscopically, multiple round to oval osseous islands were scattered throughout the bland fibrous stroma in both cases. The osseous islands varied in size and were lamellar or woven, without osteoblastic rimming, and surrounded by fibroblastic bands. Neither patient has shown evidence of postoperative recurrence for 18 months. The location, histology, and clinical course of these 2 cases were identical to the 4 cases previously reported, although age and sex varied. The lesions were tested for the R201H mutation in the GNAS gene, which is present in fibrous dysplasia. No mutations were found, suggesting a different genetic background for these lesions.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture is one of the most common injuries associated with the knee. After ACL injury, knee joint stability can be altered, resulting in abnormal loading during functional activities. Since ACL-deficient (ACLD) knees are also vulnerable to translational and rotational instability, patients need to be wary of certain motions encountered in daily life. The present study investigated the effect of walking speed and pivoting directional change during gait on knee joint kinematics of ACLD knees. We hypothesized that faster walking and crossover turning would induce severe kinematic changes.

The aim of this study was to confirm the osteoconduction capacities and determine the potential of permanent teeth ash (PTA), and deciduous teeth ash (DTA) as bone substitutes. Rats (n = 71) were divided randomly into four groups: sham, micro macroporous biphasic calcium phosphate (MBCP), PTA, and DTA. A sample of the each group was transplanted into preformed 8-mm calvarial defects (one per rat). The density of new bone was calculated and the crystallinities of the PTA and DTA were analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The degree of new bone formation was high in the MBCP and DTA groups but low in the PTA groups. The DTA was highly crystalline, whereas the PTA was not. The percentages of ?-tricalcium phosphate in the DTA and PTA were 10.7 and 3.7 %, respectively. DTA has a high osteoconduction capacity, suggesting that it is a useful bone substitute.

The Korean traditional seafood jeotgal is consumed directly or as an additive in other foods to improve flavor or fermentation efficiency. Saeujot, made from salted and fermented tiny shrimp (SFS; Acetes japonicus), is the best-selling jeotgal in Korea. In this study, we reveal the microbial diversity and dynamics in naturally fermented shrimp by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). The population fingerprints of the predominant microbiota and its succession were generated by DGGE analysis of universal V3 16S rDNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplicons. Overall, 17 strains were identified from sequencing of 30 DGGE bands. The DGGE profiles showed diverse bacterial populations in the sample, throughout the fermentation of SFS. Staphylococcus equorum, Halanaerobium saccharolyticum, Salimicrobium luteum, and Halomonas jeotgali were the dominant bacteria, and their levels steadily increased during the fermentation process. Certain other bacteria, such as Psychrobacter jeotgali and Halomonas alimentaria appeared during the early-fermentation process, while Alkalibacterium putridalgicola, Tetragenococcus muriaticus, and Salinicoccus jeotgali appeared during the late-fermentation process. The members of the order Bacillales were found to be predominant during the fermentation of SFS. Furthermore, S. equorum was identified as the dominant bacterial isolate by the traditional method of culturing under aerobic and facultative anaerobic conditions. We expect that this information will facilitate the design of autochthonous starter cultures for the production of SFS with desired characteristic sensory profiles and shorter ripening times.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) treatment prolongs the progression-free survival of patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer harbouring EGFR mutations. Intrathoracic involvement of immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease has recently been reported. However, a subset of the disease presenting as interstitial lung disease is rare. Here, we report a case of a 35-year-old man with IgG4-related lung disease with manifestations similar to those of interstitial lung disease. Chest computed tomography showed diffuse ground glass opacities and rapidly progressive pleural and subpleural fibrosis in both upper lobes. Histological findings showed diffuse interstitial lymphoplasmacytic infiltration with an increased number of IgG4-positive plasma cells. Serum levels of IgG and IgG4 were also increased. The patient was diagnosed with IgG4-related lung disease, treated with anti-inflammatory agents, and showed improvement. Lung involvement of IgG4-related disease can present as interstitial lung disease and, therefore, should be differentiated when evaluating interstitial lung disease.

Articular cartilage provides life-long weight-bearing and mechanical lubrication with extraordinary biomechanical performance and simple structure. However, articular cartilage is apparently vulnerable to multifactorial damage and insufficient to self-repair, isolated in articular capsule without nerves or blood vessels. Osteoarthritis (OA) is known as a degenerative articular cartilage deficiency progressively affecting large proportion of the world population, and restoration of hyaline cartilage is clinical challenge to repair articular cartilage lesion and recreate normal functionality over long period. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are highly proliferative and multipotent somatic cells that are able to differentiate mesoderm-derived cells including chondrocytes and osteoblasts. Continuous endeavors in basic research and preclinical trial have achieved promising outcomes in cartilage regeneration using MSCs. This review focuses on rationale and technologies of MSC-based hyaline cartilage repair involving tissue engineering, 3D biomaterials and growth factors. By comparing conventional treatment and current research progress, we describe insights of advantage and challenge in translation and application of MSC-based chondrogenesis for OA treatment.

Anaphylaxis is a rapidly occurring allergic reaction to any foreign substance, including venom from insects, foods and medications, which may cause fatalities. To prevent anaphylaxis, these triggers must be avoided. However, avoidance of numerous triggers is difficult. For this reason, the development of immunotherapeutic adjuvants that suppress the allergic response is important for anaphylaxis control. Mast cells are one of the major inflammatory cells involved in the inflammatory response, which secrete several inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor (TNF)??, interleukin (IL)?6, and IL?1?, and recruits other immune cells. Mast cells are also involved in a number of diseases, such as sinusitis, rheumatoid arthritis and asthma. Genistein, a phytoestrogen, has been reported to have anti?oxidative and anti?inflammatory activities. However, the effects of genistein on the anti?inflammatory response of mast cells remain unknown. In the present study, the anti?inflammatory effects of genistein on mast cells were investigated. Genistein significantly decreased IL?6 and IL?1? mRNA levels, as well as IL?6 production in PMA/A23187?induced mast cells activation. In addition, genistein inhibited the phosphorylation of ERK 1/2 in PMA/A23187?induced mast cell activation. However, phosphorylation of p38 was not altered. Thus, these findings indicate that genistein inhibited the inflammatory status of mast cells through inhibition of the ERK pathway.

We compared the intraoperative varus-valgus stability from 0° to 90° of flexion and postoperative clinical outcomes in patients receiving TKA via either a single-radius femoral design (50 TKA, SR group) or multi-radius femoral design (50 TKA, MR group). We measured stabilities at 0°, 30°, 60° and 90° of flexion using a navigation system. The clinical outcomes including HSS scores, WOMAC scores and VAS score during stair climbing were compared after a minimum of 2-year follow-up. The single-radius femoral designs in TKA showed better intra-operative stability at 30° of flexion (7.6 vs. 8.3) compared with the multi-radius femoral design, but not at other angles. However, the clinical outcomes revealed no other significant differences in terms of HSS scores, WOMAC scores and VAS score between two groups.

This study aimed to analyze the patterns of antipsychotic prescription to patients with schizophrenia in Korea. Using the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service-National Patients Sample (HIRA-NPS), which was a stratified sampling from the entire population under the Korean national health security system (2009), descriptive statistics for the patterns of the monopharmacy and polypharmacy, neuropsychiatric co-medications, and prescribed individual antipsychotic for patients with schizophrenia were performed. Comparisons of socioeconomic and clinical factors were performed among patients prescribed only with first- and second-generation antipsychotics. Of 126,961 patients with schizophrenia (age 18-80 yr), 13,369 were prescribed with antipsychotic monopharmacy and the rest 113,592 with polypharmacy. Two or more antipsychotics were prescribed to 31.34% of the patients. Antiparkinson medications (66.60%), anxiolytics (65.42%), mood stabilizers (36.74%), and antidepressants (25.90%) were co-medicated. Patients who were prescribed only with first-generation antipsychotics (n=26,254) were characterized by significantly older age, greater proportion of male, higher proportion of medicaid, higher total medical cost, lower self-payment cost, and higher co-medication rates of antiparkinson agents and anxiolytics than those who were prescribed only with second-generation antipsychotics (n=67,361). In this study, it has been reported substantial prescription rates of first-generation antipsychotics and antipsychotic polypharmacy and relatively small prescription rate of clozapine to patients with schizophrenia. Since this study has firstly presented the patterns of antipsychotic prescription to schizophrenic patients in Korean national population, the findings of this study can be compared with those of later investigations about this theme.

A molar-incisor malformation (MIM) is a newly discovered type of dental anomaly of the permanent first molars, deciduous second molars, and permanent maxillary central incisors. MIM anomalies of the permanent first molars and deciduous second molars may include normal crowns with a constricted cervical region and thin, narrow, and short roots, whereas the affected maxillary central incisors may exhibit a hypoplastic enamel notch near the cervical third of the clinical crown. Although the etiology of MIM remains to be determined, it is thought to be attributable to an epigenetic factor linked to brain- and central nervous system-related systemic diseases at around age 1 to 2 years. MIM teeth are associated with clinical problems such as impaction, early exfoliation, space loss, spontaneous pain, periapical abscess, and poor incisor esthetics. Children with MIM teeth should be observed closely with respect to their medical history, and dentists should formulate a wider-ranging treatment plan.

Giant cell tumor (GCT) of the bone is a benign tumor with a high incidence of recurrence. The majority of recurrence occurs in the bone, typically where curettage was performed previously. Soft tissue recurrence is much less common and often shows ossification at the periphery of the soft tissue mass. We report four cases of ossified soft tissue recurrence of giant cell tumor of the bone after surgery at follow-up examination using plain radiography, ultrasound, CT, and MR imagings. Imaging findings of soft tissue recurrence with peripheral or central ossification were reviewed with pathologic correlation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to describe soft tissue tumor recurrence with ossification illustrated and monitored at various imaging modalities over an extended follow-up period.

This paper aims to introduce, summarize, and emphasize the importance of the 'Evidence-Based, Pharmacological Treatment Guideline for Depression in Korea, Revised Edition'. The guideline broadly covers most aspects of the pharmacological treatment of patients in Korea diagnosed with moderate to severe major depression according to the DSM-IV TR. The guideline establishment process involved determining and answering a number of key questions, searching and selecting publications, evaluating recommendations, preparing guideline drafts, undergoing external expert reviews, and obtaining approval. A guideline adaptation process was conducted for the revised edition. The guideline strongly recommends pharmacological treatment considered appropriate to the current clinical situation in Korea, and should be considered helpful when selecting the appropriate pharmacological treatment of patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder. Therefore, the wide distribution of this guideline is recommended.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the acaricidal activities of spearmint oil and carvone derivatives against house dust mites using contact and fumigant toxicity bioassays to replace benzyl benzoate as a synthetic acaricide. Based on the LD50 values, the contact toxicity bioassay revealed that dihydrocarvone (0.95 and 0.88?µg/cm2) was 7.7 and 6.8 times more toxic than benzyl benzoate (7.33 and 6.01?µg/cm2) against Dermatophagoides farinae and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, respectively, followed by carvone (3.78 and 3.23?µg/cm2), spearmint oil (5.16 and 4.64?µg/cm2), carveol (6.00 and 5.80?µg/cm2), and dihydrocarveol (8.23 and 7.10?µg/cm2). Results of the fumigant toxicity bioassay showed that dihydrocarvone (2.73 and 2.16?µg/cm2) was approximately 4.0 and 4.8 times more effective than benzyl benzoate (11.00 and 10.27?µg/cm2), followed by carvone (6.63 and 5.78?µg/cm2), carveol (7.58 and 7.24?µg/cm2), spearmint oil (9.55 and 8.10?µg/cm2), and dihydrocarveol (9.79 and 8.14?µg/cm2). Taken together, spearmint oil and carvone derivatives are a likely viable alternative to synthetic acaricides for managing house dust mites.

Although pharmacological treatment constitutes the main therapeutic approach for depression, non-pharmacological treatments (self-care or psychotherapeutic approach) are usually regarded as more essential therapeutic approaches in clinical practice. However, there have been few clinical practice guidelines concerning self-care or psychotherapy in the management of depression. This study introduces the 'Evidence-Based, Non-Pharmacological Treatment Guideline for Depression in Korea.' For the first time, a guideline was developed for non-pharmacological treatments for Korean adults with mild-to-moderate depression. The guideline development process consisted of establishing several key questions related to non-pharmacologic treatments of depression, searching the literature for studies which answer these questions, assessing the evidence level of each selected study, drawing up draft recommendation, and peer review. The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network grading system was used to evaluate the quality of evidence. As a result of this process, the guideline recommends exercise therapy, bibliotherapy, cognitive behavior therapy, short-term psychodynamic supportive psychotherapy, and interpersonal psychotherapy as the non-pharmacological treatments for adult patients with mild-to-moderate depression in Korea. Hence, it is necessary to develop specific methodologies for several non-pharmacological treatment for Korean adults with depression.

Splenosis is defined as heterotopic autotransplantation of spleen tissue following traumatic rupture of the spleen, or surgery. It is a benign disease that is generally without any symptoms and is discovered incidentally. Surgical intervention is recommended if symptoms are present. We report the successful laparoscopic management of a 49-year-old Korean woman with splenosis-associated symptoms who had undergone splenectomy.

The term schizophrenia, which comes from the Greek roots "skhizein" and "phren," was translated as "Jungshinbunyeolbyung" in East Asian Countries, including Japan, Korea, and China. The term literally means "mind-splitting disease." This term has generated a misconception of the disorder as an untreatable chaotic personality, thus instilling stigma and causing suffering in patients and their families. This socio-cultural connotation has impeded medical treatment of schizophrenia. Recent neuroscience research has suggested neural network dysfunction in schizophrenia. Accordingly, a new term, "Johyeonbyung (attunement disorder)", was coined in South Korea. This term literally refers to tuning a string instrument, and metaphorically it describes schizophrenia as a disorder caused by mistuning of the brain's neural network. We expect that the term Johyeonbyung will incite less prejudice and that its metaphoric description of the disorder may help patients to access medical treatment in the early phase. The name of a psychiatric disorder can influence others' attitudes toward patients; thus, discretion is crucial in naming psychiatric disorders.

A novel gene encoding thermostable endoglucanase was identified in Xanthomonas sp. EC102 from soil. The gene had 1,458 base pairs of open reading frame, which encode a 52-kDa protein of 486 amino acid residues. Sequence of the amino acid residues was similar with the endoglucanase from Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris ATCC33913 (GenBank Accession No. NP_638867.1) (94 % identity). The endoglucanase was overexpressed in Escherichia coli BL21 and purified. Temperature for the highest enzymatic activity was 70 °C and pH optima was pH 5.5. The specific activity of the endoglucanase toward carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) was approximately 2 ?mol min?¹ mg?¹, V max for CMC was 1.44 ?mol mg?¹ min?¹, and K m values was 25.6 mg mL?¹. The EC102 endoglucanase was stable at temperatures up to 60 °C, and it was activated by 0.1 mM of Mn²? and Co²?. This is the first report about thermostable endoglucanase from Xanthomonas sp.

A 76-year-old male underwent a left upper lobectomy with wedge resection of the superior segment of the left lower lobe using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for non-small-cell lung cancer of the left upper lobe. He presented with shortness of breath, fever, and leukocytosis. Chest radiography showed atelectasis at the remaining left lower lobe. Bronchoscopy revealed narrowing of the left lower bronchus with purulent secretion, and computed tomography showed downward kinking of the left lower lobar bronchus. He underwent exploratory VATS, and intraoperative findings showed an inferiorly kinked left lower lobar bronchus with upward displacement of the left lower lobe. After adhesiolysis, the kinked bronchus was straightened, and bronchopexy was performed to the pericardium to prevent the recurrence of bronchial kinking. Also, the inferior pulmonary ligament was reattached to prevent upward displacement. Postoperative follow-up bronchoscopy revealed no evidence of residual bronchial obstruction, and chest radiography showed no atelectasis thereafter.

Silver materials have been widely used in diverse fields. However, their toxicity and their mechanism, especially in different forms, have not been studied sufficiently. Thus, cytotoxicity, apoptosis, and interleukin-1beta (IL-1?) production were investigated using macrophage-like THP-1 cells in the presence of Ag microparticles (AgMPs, 2.7 µm), Ag submicroparticles (AgSMPs, 150 nm), and Ag wires (AgWs, 274 nm×5.3 µm). The levels of cytotoxicity, apoptosis, and IL-1? production by AgWs were higher than those by the other two AgSMPs and AgMPs. This trend was also observed with each step of the signaling mechanism for IL-1? production, which is a single pathway affiliated with ROS generation or lysosomal rupture or both, cathepsin B, caspase-1 (NALP3 inflammasome), and finally IL-1? production in THP-1 cells. All these results suggest that, for development of safe and effective silver materials, the shape or form of silver materials should be considered, especially for macrophage cell lines because epithelial cell lines are not overly sensitive to silver materials.

On the basis of the LD50 values against D. farinae , (1S)-(-)-verbenone (1.38 ?g/cm(2)) was about 7.4 times more active than benzyl benzoate (10.15 ?g/cm(2)), followed by (+)-trans-myrtanol (2.27 ?g/cm(2)), (-)-trans-myrtanol (2.30 ?g/cm(2)), and A. aucheri oil (8.75 ?g/cm(2)). (1S)-(-)-Verbenone (1.25 ?g/cm(2)) was approximately 7.8 times more effective against D. pteronyssinus than benzyl benzoate (9.80 ?g/cm(2)), followed by (+)-trans-myrtanol (2.18 ?g/cm(2)), (-)-trans-myrtanol (2.22 ?g/cm(2)), and A. aucheri oil (8.46 ?g/cm(2)). In the case of T. putrescentiae , (1S)-(-)-verbenone (3.75 ?g/cm(2)) was roughly 3.5 times more toxic than benzyl benzoate (13.25 ?g/cm(2)), followed by (+)-trans-myrtanol (12.57 ?g/cm(2)), (-)-trans-myrtanol (12.95 ?g/cm(2)), and A. aucheri oil (11.55 ?g/cm(2)). These results indicate that A. aucheri oil and (1S)-(-)-verbenone structural analogues may be effective natural agents to control house dust and storage mites.

The acaricidal potential of an active constituent isolated from Schizonepeta tenuifolia oil and its structurally related derivatives was evaluated using filter paper and impregnated cotton fabric disk bioassays against house dust and stored food mites. The acaricidal constituent of S. tenuifolia oil was isolated by chromatographic techniques and identified as 2-isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexanone by GC-MS, (1)H-, and (13)C NMR spectra. 2-Isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexanone was a potent acaricide against house dust and stored food mites, based on the LD50 values from the filter paper and impregnated cotton fabric disk bioassays, followed by 4-isopropylcyclohexanone, 2-isopropylidene-5-methylcyclohexanone, 2-methylcyclohexanone, 3-methylcyclohexanone, 4-methylcyclohexanone, and benzyl benzoate. Furthermore, 4-isopropylcyclohexanone and 2-isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexanone, which were introduced on the isopropyl (C3H7) functional radical of the cyclohexanone skeleton, had the highest acaricidal potency. These results indicate that S. tenuifolia oil and 2-isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexanone structural analogues could be effective natural acaricides for managing house dust and stored food mites.

The acaricidal effects of the active constituent isolated from Ostericum praeteritum oil and its derivatives were compared with that of benzyl benzoate using fumigant and contact toxicity bioassays against Tyrophagus putrescentiae mites. The active compound of O. praeteritum was isolated by various chromatographic techniques and was identified as 3-methylphenol (C7H8O). On the basis of 50 % lethal dose values, 3-methylphenol (1.42 ?g/cm(2)) was determined to be 9.18 times more effective than benzyl benzoate (13.04 ?g/cm(2)), followed by 6-fluoro-3-methylphenol (2.18 ?g/cm(2)), 4-isopropyl-3-methylphenol (2.53 ?g/ cm(2)), and 6-chloro-3-methylphenol (4.03 ?g/cm(2)), against Tyrophagus putrescentiae mites in the fumigant bioassay. In the contact toxicity bioassay, 3-methylphenol (1.03 ?g/cm(2)) was the most-toxic compound against T. putrescentiae mites, followed by 6-fluoro-3-methylphenol (2.09 ?g/cm(2)), 4-isopropyl-3-methylphenol (2.11 ?g/cm(2)), 6-chloro-3-methylphenol (3.78 ?g/cm(2)), and benzyl benzoate (10.33 ?g/cm(2)). These results indicate that the introduction of chloro, isopropyl, and fluoro functional groups to the 3-methylphenol skeleton increased the acaricidal activity. Therefore, 3-methylphenol and its derivatives could potentially be used as natural acaricides against T. purescentiae.

Mosquito larvicidal activities of active constituent isolated from Tabebuia avellanedae bark and its structurally related derivatives were examined against the fourth instar larvae of Aedes aegypti , Culex pipiens pallens , and Ochlerotatus togoi . The insecticidal constituent of T. avellanedae bark was isolated by chromatographic techniques and identified as 2-hydroxy-3-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)-1,4-naphthalenedione. On the basis of the 50% lethal concentration (LC50) values against C. pipiens pallens larvae, the most toxic compound was 1,4-naphthalenedione (1.26 mg/L), followed by 1,2-naphthalenedione (1.43 mg/L), 1,4-naphthalenediol (3.20 mg/L), 2-chloro-3-pyrrolidino-1,4-naphthalenedione (5.11 mg/L), 2-hydroxy-3-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)-1,4-naphthalenedione (8.30 mg/L), and 2-chloro-3-morpholino-1,4-naphthalenedione (12.98 mg/L). Similar results against A. aegypti and O. togoi larvae were observed for 2-hydroxy-3-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)-1,4-naphthalenedione and its derivatives. According to the LC50 values against three mosquito species, these compounds were less toxic than pirimiphos-methyl. Nonetheless, naturally occurring T. avaellenedae bark-derived materials could be useful as a natural mosquito control agent.

The online community resource Phytophthora database (PD) was developed to support accurate and rapid identification of Phytophthora and to help characterize and catalog the diversity and evolutionary relationships within the genus. Since its release in 2008, the sequence database has grown to cover 1 to 12 loci for ?2,600 isolates (representing 138 described and provisional species). Sequences of multiple mitochondrial loci were added to complement nuclear loci-based phylogenetic analyses and diagnostic tool development. Key characteristics of most newly described and provisional species have been summarized. Other additions to improve the PD functionality include: (i) geographic information system tools that enable users to visualize the geographic origins of chosen isolates on a global-scale map, (ii) a tool for comparing genetic similarity between isolates via microsatellite markers to support population genetic studies, (iii) a comprehensive review of molecular diagnostics tools and relevant references, (iv) sequence alignments used to develop polymerase chain reaction-based diagnostics tools to support their utilization and new diagnostic tool development, and (v) an online community forum for sharing and preserving experience and knowledge accumulated in the global Phytophthora community. Here we present how these improvements can support users and discuss the PDs future direction.

This study evaluated the acaricidal activities of acetophenone and its derivatives for their potentials as natural acaricides using an impregnated fumigant bioassay against Dermatophagoides spp. and Tyrophagus putrescentiae . On the basis of the LD50 values against D. farinae, 3-methoxyacetophenone (0.41 ?g/cm(2)) was 89.9 times more toxic than DEET (36.87 ?g/cm(2)), followed by 4-methoxyacetophenone (0.52 ?g/cm(2)), 2-methoxyacetophenone (0.75 ?g/cm(2)), 2-hydroxy-5-methoxyacetophenone (1.03 ?g/cm(2)), 2-hydroxy-4-methoxyacetophenone (1.29 ?g/cm(2)), acetophenone (1.48 ?g/cm(2)), 2-hydroxyacetophenone (1.74 ?g/cm(2)), 2,5-dimethoxyacetophenone (1.87 ?g/cm(2)), 2,4-dimethoxyacetophenone (2.10 ?g/cm(2)), and benzyl benzoate (9.92 ?g/cm(2)). In regard to structure-activity relationships between acaricidal activity and functional radicals (hydroxyl and methoxy groups) on the acetophenone skeleton, a monomethoxy group (2-, 3-, and 4-methoxyacetone) on the acetophenone skeleton was more toxic than were the other groups (2,4- and 2,5-dimethoxyacetophenone, 2- and 4-hydroxyacetophenone, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxyacetophenone, 2-hydroxy-5-methoxyacetophenone, and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyacetophenone). These results indicated that acaricidal activity against three mite species changed with the introduction of functional radicals (hydroxyl and methoxy groups) onto the acetophenone skeleton.

The advances in the knowledge of anatomy, surgical techniques, and fixation devices have led to the improvement of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction over the past 10 years. Nowadays, double bundle and anatomical single bundle ACL reconstruction that more closely restores the normal anatomy of the ACL are becoming popular. Although there is still no definite conclusion whether double bundle ACL reconstruction provides better clinical results than single bundle reconstruction, the trend has shifted to anatomic reconstruction regardless of single bundle or double bundle techniques. We could not find any significant differences in the clinical outcomes and stability after ACL reconstruction according to the type of graft or fixation device. Therefore, surgeons should select an ideal ACL reconstruction according to the patients condition and surgeons experience.

The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the clinical and functional outcomes of THA using large-diameter metal-on-metal articulation in patients with neuromuscular weakness. Nineteen consecutive patients (19 hips) with neuromuscular weakness and displaced femoral neck fractures were enrolled. Functional improvement and recovery, radiological evaluation of THA and surgical morbidity were assessed. Mean Harris hip and WOMAC scores at final follow-up were 81.0 and 42.9, respectively. At final follow-up, no dislocation, metal hypersensitivity, or osteolysis was observed and no patient required revision of THA. The findings of this study indicate that the functional results of THA using large-diameter metal-on-metal articulation in patients with neuromuscular weakness can produce satisfactory outcomes with early functional recovery and a low dislocation rate.

The acaricidal properties of 1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one isolated from Artemisia iwayomogi and its structural analogues were evaluated against Dermatophagoides farinae and D. pteronyssinus, and their effects were compared with that of the commercial acaricide benzyl benzoate. Based on the 50 % lethal dose (LD50) values against D. farinae, 1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one (0.82 ?g/cm(2)) was 9.71 times more effective than benzyl benzoate (7.96 ?g/cm(2)), followed by (1R)-1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one (1.03 ?g/cm(2)), (1S)-1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one (1.58 ?g/cm(2)), and (1R)-1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one oxime (3.05 ?g/cm(2)) in a filter paper bioassay. The acaricidal activities of 1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one and its structural analogues against D. pteronyssinus were similar to those against D. farinae. These results demonstrate that naturally occurring A. iwayomogi-isolated 1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one and its structural analogues are suitable for the production of natural acaricides against house dust mites.

In developing our video relationships, we compare around 5 million PubMed articles to our library of over 4,500 methods videos. In some cases the language used in the PubMed abstracts makes matching that content to a JoVE video difficult. In other cases, there happens not to be any content in our video library that is relevant to the topic of a given abstract. In these cases, our algorithms are trying their best to display videos with relevant content, which can sometimes result in matched videos with only a slight relation.
