We reported that NAD+-dependent SIRT1, RelB, and SIRT6 nuclear proteins in monocytes regulate a switch from the glycolysis-dependent acute inflammatory response to fatty-acid- oxidation-dependent sepsis adaptation. We also found that disrupting SIRT1 activity during adaptation restores immunometabolic homeostasis and rescues septic mice from death. Here, we show that nuclear SIRT1 guides RelB to differentially induce SIRT3 expression and also increases mitochondrial biogenesis, which alters bioenergetics during sepsis adaptation. We constructed this concept using TLR4-stimulated THP1 human promonocytes, a model that mimics the initiation and adaptation stages of sepsis. Following increased expression, mitochondrial SIRT3 deacetylase activates the rate-limiting tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) isocitrate dehydrogenase 2 (IDH2) and superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2), concomitant with increases in citrate synthase activity. Mitochondrial oxygen consumption rate (OCR) increases early and decreases during adaptation, parallel with modifications to membrane depolarization, ATP generation, and production of mitochondrial superoxide and whole-cell hydrogen peroxide. Evidence of SIRT1-RelB induction of mitochondrial biogenesis included increases in mitochondrial mass, mitochondrial-to-nuclear DNA ratios, and both nuclear and mitochondrial encoded proteins. We confirmed the SIRT-RelB-SIRT3 adaptation link to mitochondrial bioenergetics in both TLR4-stimulated normal and sepsis-adapted human blood monocytes and mouse splenocytes. We also found that SIRT1 inhibition ex vivo reversed the sepsis-induced changes in bioenergetics.

LaAlO3 crystals were implanted by C ions and O ions at an energy of 6.0 MeV with a fluence of 1.5×1015??ions/cm2. The profiles of the guided modes were measured through prism coupling and end-face coupling methods with a 633 nm laser source. A nonleaky waveguide structure in the TM mode was fabricated by O ion implantation after a proper annealing treatment. Characteristics of the implanted C and O ions were compared. Some changes of the full width at half of the maximum and intensity of the Raman spectra were observed between the waveguide and substrate regions in LaAlO3 crystals. Thus, the Raman spectra can be used to visualize any damage or defects in the LaAlO3 crystals during the implantation process.

A new nonaqueous and abrasive-free magnetorheological finishing (MRF) method is adopted for processing potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystal due to its low hardness, high brittleness, temperature sensitivity, and water solubility. This paper researches the influence of structural characteristics on the surface roughness of MRF-finished KDP crystal. The material removal by dissolution is uniform layer by layer when the polishing parameters are stable. The angle between the direction of the polishing wheel's linear velocity and the initial turning lines will affect the surface roughness. If the direction is perpendicular to the initial turning lines, the polishing can remove the lines. If the direction is parallel to the initial turning lines, the polishing can achieve better surface roughness. The structural characteristic of KDP crystal is related to its internal chemical bonds due to its anisotropy. During the MRF finishing process, surface roughness will be improved if the structural characteristics of the KDP crystal are the same on both sides of the wheel. The processing results of (001) plane crystal show we can get the best surface roughness (RMS of 0.809 nm) if the directions of cutting and MRF polishing are along the (110) direction.

Periodic surface structures with periods as small as about one-tenth of the irradiating femtosecond (fs) laser light wavelength were created on the surface of a titanium (Ti) foil by exploiting laser-induced oxidation and third harmonic generation (THG). They were achieved by using 100-fs laser pulses with a repetition rate of 1 kHz and a wavelength ranging from 1.4 to 2.2 ?m. It was revealed that an extremely thin TixOy layer was formed on the surface of the Ti foil after irradiating fs laser light with a fluence smaller than the ablation threshold of Ti, leading to a significant enhancement in THG which may exceed the ablation threshold of TixOy. As compared with Ti, the maximum efficacy factor for TixOy appears at a larger normalized wavevector in the direction perpendicular to the polarization of the fs laser light. As a result, the THG-dominated laser ablation of TixOy induces 100-nm periodic structures parallel to the polarization of the fs laser light. The depth of the periodic structures was found to be ~10 nm by atomic force microscopy and the formation of the thin TixOy layer was verified by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.

Based on the concept of the scattering cancellation technique, we propose a nonideal ultrathin mantle cloak that can efficiently suppress the total scattering cross sections of an electrically large conducting cylinder (over one free-space wavelength). The cloaking mechanism is investigated in depth based on the Mie scattering theory and is simultaneously interpreted from the perspective of far-field bistatic scattering and near-field distributions. We remark that, unlike the perfect transformation-optics-based cloak, this nonideal cloaking technique is mainly designed to minimize simultaneously several scattering multipoles of a relatively large geometry around considerably broad bandwidth. Numerical simulations and experimental results show that the antiscattering ability of the metasurface gives rise to excellent total scattering reduction of the electrically large cylinder and remarkable electric-field restoration around the cloak. The outstanding cloaking performance together with the good features of and ultralow profile, flexibility, and easy fabrication predict promising applications in the microwave frequencies.

Radiofrequency ablation versus reresection in treating recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma: a meta-analysis.

Treatment for recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (RHCC) remains controversial. This study tried to compare survival benefits between radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and reresection for RHCC patients following curative surgical treatments.Databases were searched for comparative studies published from 2008 to 2014 on RFA versus reresection in treating RHCC. Meta-analysis was performed using a random or fixed-effect model to compare the overall survivals (OSs) and disease-free survivals (DFSs) between RFA and reresection. Begg funnel plot and Egger test were performed to assess the publication bias.Six retrospective comparative studies fulfilled our criteria and were included. For patients with RHCC, RFA was equivalent to reresection in 1-year OSs (odds ratio [OR] 0.86; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.50-1.49; P?=?0.587), 3-year OSs (OR 0.91; 95% CI, 0.64-1.28; P?=?0.581), and 5-year OSs (OR 0.97; 95% CI, 0.69-1.36; P?=?0.846). However, reresection was superior to RFA in 3-year DFSs (OR 2.25; 95% CI, 1.37-3.68; P?=?0.001) and 5-year DFSs (OR 3.70; 95% CI, 1.98-6.93; P?=?0.000). The outcome of 1-year DFSs was unstable with statistical heterogeneity among studies included in meta-analysis (I?=?77.4%). No evidence of publication bias was found. RFA was considered as a less invasive modality for RHCC patients.RFA achieves comparable OSs as reresection in the treatment of RHCC, with lower postoperative complications.

CeCaFDB: a curated database for the documentation, visualization and comparative analysis of central carbon metabolic flux distributions explored by 13C-fluxomics.

The Central Carbon Metabolic Flux Database (CeCaFDB, available at http://www.cecafdb.org) is a manually curated, multipurpose and open-access database for the documentation, visualization and comparative analysis of the quantitative flux results of central carbon metabolism among microbes and animal cells. It encompasses records for more than 500 flux distributions among 36 organisms and includes information regarding the genotype, culture medium, growth conditions and other specific information gathered from hundreds of journal articles. In addition to its comprehensive literature-derived data, the CeCaFDB supports a common text search function among the data and interactive visualization of the curated flux distributions with compartmentation information based on the Cytoscape Web API, which facilitates data interpretation. The CeCaFDB offers four modules to calculate a similarity score or to perform an alignment between the flux distributions. One of the modules was built using an inter programming algorithm for flux distribution alignment that was specifically designed for this study. Based on these modules, the CeCaFDB also supports an extensive flux distribution comparison function among the curated data. The CeCaFDB is strenuously designed to address the broad demands of biochemists, metabolic engineers, systems biologists and members of the -omics community.

Diffraction-free surface waves by metasurfaces.

We propose a method to design and realize planar Bessel lens using artificial metasurfaces to produce diffraction-free surface waves. The planar Bessel lens is composed of two sublenses: a half Maxwell fisheye lens which can shape the surface cylindrical waves to surface plane waves, and an inhomogeneous flat lens which can convert the surface plane waves into approximate diffraction-free surface waves in a diamond-shaped focusing area. Through the planar Bessel lens, a point source on the metasurface directly radiates the diffraction-free surface waves. In realization, we construct the inhomogeneous metasurfaces by subwavelength metallic patches printed on a grounded dielectric substrate. Simulation and experimental results have good agreements, which jointly show the formation of the diffraction-free surface waves in the microwave band.

E2F1 and FOXO3 are two transcription factors that have been shown to participate in cellular senescence. Previous report reveals that E2F1 enhanced cellular senescence in human fibroblast cells, while FOXO transcription factors play against senescence by regulation reactive oxygen species scavenging proteins. However, their functional interplay has been unclear. Here we use E2F1 knockout Murine Embryonic Fibroblasts (MEFs), knockdown RNAi constructs, and ectopic expression of E2F1 to show that it functions by negatively regulating FOXO3. E2F1 attenuates FOXO3-mediated expression of MnSOD and Catalase without affecting FOXO3 protein stability, subcellular localization, or phosphorylation by Akt. We mapped the interaction between E2F1 and FOXO3 to a region including the DNA binding domain of E2F1 and the C-terminal transcription-activation domain of FOXO3. We propose that E2F1 inhibits FOXO3-dependent transcription by directly binding FOXO3 in the nucleus and preventing activation of its target genes. Moreover, knockdown of the C. elegans E2F1 ortholog efl-1 significantly extends lifespan in a manner that requires the activity of the C. elegans FOXO gene daf-16. We conclude that there is an evolutionarily conserved signaling connection between E2F1 and FOXO3, which regulates cellular senescence and aging by regulating the activity of FOXO3. We speculate that drugs and/or therapies that inhibit this physical interaction might be good candidates for reducing cellular senescence and increasing longevity.

However, at present a good standard to define tricuspid annular dilatation is not available. The study aim was to introduce an alternative method based on annular circumference to judge the extent of annular dilatation, and investigate its predictive ability for the postoperative progression of tricuspid regurgitation (TR).

A best evidence topic in adult valvular surgery was written according to a structured protocol. The question addressed was 'Does concomitant tricuspid annuloplasty increase the perioperative mortality and morbidity when correcting left-sided valve disease?' A total of 561 papers were found using the reported search, of which 12 presented the best evidence to answer the clinical question. The authors, country, journal, date of publication, patient group studied, study type, relevant outcomes and results of these papers are tabulated. Among these 12 papers, there were nine retrospective studies, two cohort studies and one randomized controlled trial (RCT). Overall, additional tricuspid valve (TV) repair takes more time during operations, particularly with a ring annuloplasty method. The mean aortic cross-clamping times were 57-83 min without associated tricuspid repair and 62-100 min with, and cardiopulmonary bypass times without and with repair were 82-124 and 90-174 min, respectively. A study of 624 patients who had undergone isolated mitral valve (MV) surgery and MV surgery plus TV repair showed more female and atrial fibrillation patients in the tricuspid valve plasty (TVP) group, but no increase in the 30-day mortality was found. One RCT, presenting similar patient baseline characteristics, also found no difference in the hospital mortality rates between the TVP group and the non-TVP group. Another 10 studies also demonstrated no statistically significant differences in perioperative mortality. In a cohort study of 311 patients undergoing MV repair with or without tricuspid annuloplasty, postoperative complications, such as bleeding, stroke, pacemaker, haemofiltration and myocardial infarction, all showed no statistically significant differences in the two groups. One study retrospectively analysed a large number of patients undergoing either isolated left-sided valve surgery or a concomitant TV repair, and there were no statistically significant differences regarding major complications (bleeding, pacemaker, respiratory insufficiency, and renal failure). Moreover, another three studies also found no statistically significant differences in terms of bleeding, pacemaker, wound infection, neurological deficit, pericardial effusion, low cardiac output syndrome and dialysis. In conclusion, there is good evidence to support that tricuspid annuloplasty is a low-risk procedure and concomitant TV repair does not significantly increase the perioperative mortality and morbidity when correcting left-sided valve disease.

From Ergolines to Indoles: Improved Inhibitors of the Human H3 Receptor for the Treatment of Narcolepsy.

Ergolines were recently identified as a novel class of H3 receptor (H3R) inverse agonists. Although their optimization led to drug candidates with encouraging properties for the treatment of narcolepsy, brain penetration remained low. To overcome this issue, ergoline 1 ((6aR,9R,10aR)-4-(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl)-N-phenyl-9-(pyrrolidine-1-carbonyl)-6,6a,8,9,10,10a-hexahydroindolo[4,3-fg]quinoline-7(4H)-carboxamide)) was transformed into a series of indole derivatives with high H3R affinity. These new molecules were profiled by simultaneous determination of their brain receptor occupancy (RO) levels and pharmacodynamic (PD) effects in mice. These efforts culminated in the discovery of 15?m ((R)-1-isopropyl-5-(1-(2-(2-methylpyrrolidin-1-yl)ethyl)-1H-indol-4-yl)pyridin-2(1H)-one), which has an ideal profile showing a strong correlation of PD effects with RO, and no measurable safety liabilities. Its desirably short duration of action was confirmed by electroencephalography (EEG) measurements in rats.

We propose a method to control electromagnetic (EM) radiations by holographic metasurfaces, including to producing multi-beam scanning in one dimension (1D) and two dimensions (2D) with the change of frequency. The metasurfaces are composed of subwavelength metallic patches on grounded dielectric substrate. We present a combined theory of holography and leaky wave to realize the multi-beam radiations by exciting the surface interference patterns, which are generated by interference between the excitation source and required radiation waves. As the frequency changes, we show that the main lobes of EM radiation beams could accomplish 1D or 2D scans regularly by using the proposed holographic metasurfaces shaped with different interference patterns. This is the first time to realize 2D scans of antennas by changing the frequency. Full-wave simulations and experimental results validate the proposed theory and confirm the corresponding physical phenomena.

Radioiodine therapy, the most effective form of systemic radiotherapy available, is currently useful only for thyroid cancer because of the thyroid-specific expression of the human sodium iodide symporter (hNIS). Here, we explore the efficacy of a novel form of gene therapy using prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) promoter-mediated hNIS gene transfer followed by radioiodine administration for the treatment of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). The androgen-dependent C33 LNCaP cell line and the androgen-independent C81 LNCaP cell line were transfected by adenovirus. PSMA promoter-hNIS (Ad.PSMApro-hNIS) or adenovirus.cytomegalovirus-hNIS containing the cytomegalovirus promoter (Ad.CMV-hNIS) or a control virus. The iodide uptake was measured in vitro. The in vivo iodide uptake by C81 cell xenografts in nude mice injected with an adenovirus carrying the hNIS gene linked to PSMA and the corresponding tumor volume fluctuation were assessed. Iodide accumulation was shown in different LNCaP cell lines after Ad.PSMApro-hNIS and Ad.CMV-hNIS infection, but not in different LNCaP cell lines after adenovirus.cytomegalovirus (Ad.CMV) infection. At each time point, higher iodide uptake was shown in the C81 cells infected with Ad.PSMApro-hNIS than in the C33 cells (P < 0.05). An in vivo animal model showed a significant difference in 131 I radioiodine uptake in the tumors infected with Ad.PSMApro-hNIS, Ad.CMV-hNIS and control virus (P < 0.05) and a maximum reduction of tumor volume in mice infected with Ad.PSMApro-hNIS. These results show prostate-specific expression of the hNIS gene delivered by the PSMA promoter and effective radioiodine therapy of CRPC by the PSMA promoter-driven hNIS transfection.

Meteorological Parameters and the Onset of Chest Pain in Subjects with Acute ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction: an Eight-Year, Single-Center Study in China.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of weather on the occurrence of acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction in Chinese subjects. Methods: Weather and climate data, as well as the occurrence of STEMI, were monitored at 2 am, 8 am, 2 pm, and 8 pm between 2003 and 2010. Generalized additive Poisson models were utilized to plot the numbers of patients with STEMI within 6 hour intervals against climatological variations, after accounting for the effects of the hour and season. Results: The inclusion of meteorological conditions, including observed atmospheric pressure (hPa, hectopascal) variations during the previous three hours and temperature (°C, degrees Celsius), significantly affected the occurrence of STEMI, as measured every six hours. Compared with the 50th percentile of atmospheric pressure variations, the RRs (95% CI) for the first percentile, 10th percentile, 25th percentile, 75th percentile, 90th percentile, and 99th percentile of atmospheric pressure variation over lag 0 were 1.66 (1.36?2.03), 1.47 (1.30?1.67), 1.22 (1.12?1.33), 1.16 (1.07?1.25), 1.27 (1.13?1.43), and 1.16 (0.92?1.46), respectively. Compared to the 50th percentile of temperature, the RRs (95% CI) for the first percentile, 10th percentile, 25th percentile, 75th percentile, 90th percentile, and 99th percentile of temperature over lag 0 were 0.58 (0.40?0.83), 0.60 (0.46?0.78), 0.69 (0.57?0.83), 1.33 (1.14?1.56), 1.39 (1.13?1.71), and 1.17 (0.84?1.63), respectively. Conclusions: Based on the eight-year, single-center study, significant relationships were observed among the occurrence of STEMI and atmospheric pressure variations during the previous three hours and temperature after account for long-term time trends. © 2014 S. Identification of angiogenesis-related miRNAs in a population of patients with renal clear cell carcinoma.

In the present study, we compared the expression of miRNAs and angiogenesis-related genes in the renal tumors and adjacent normal renal tissues of patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). The first part of the present study was a preliminary analysis of 4 patients with stage T1a/b ccRCC that measured the levels of angiogenesis and expression of angiogenesis-related genes and miRNAs in the tumors and adjacent normal renal tissues. The second part of this study was an analysis of 30 patients with stage T1, T2 or T3 ccRCC that employed qPCR to characterize expression of angiogenesis-related miRNAs in the tumors and adjacent normal tissues. The first part of this study indicated that all 4 patients had increased levels of CD34 in tumors, indicating elevated angiogenesis. However, quantitative analysis of microvessel density and expression of miRNAs indicated highly variable results among these patients. The data of all patients in the present study indicated that more patients with stage T1 ccRCC had higher expression of miR-126 and miR-378 in their normal tissues, whereas more patients with stage T2/3 ccRCC had higher expression of these miRNAs in their tumor tissues. The tumors of patients with ccRCC had lower expression of miR-126 and miR-378 during the early stages of disease (T1), but higher expression of these miRNAs during the later stages of disease (T2/T3).

Introduction: In order to anatomically reconstruct ureteral stenosis, we present a novel technique for laparoscopic ureteral reimplantation. Patients and Methods: Three young females, who were diagnosed with hydroureteronephrosis caused by congenital vesicoureteral junction obstruction, were treated by laparoscopic ureteral reimplantation with a tunnel underneath the broad ligament. Results: Surgery was performed successfully without conversion to open surgery. No major intra- or postoperative complications occurred. Postoperative follow-up was 38, 33 and 26 months, respectively. The operative time was between 220 and 260 min. The mean estimated blood loss was less than 20 ml. Subsequent imaging performed 3 months after surgery revealed relief of hydroureteronephrosis for all patients. The patients all gave birth to healthy neonates and showed normal urinary tract sonogram and urine analysis during the gestation period. Conclusion: Laparoscopic ureteral reimplantation with broad ligament tunnel is safe and effective, allowing for anatomical reconstruction of ureter defects. However, a larger clinical sample and longer follow-up period will be needed. © 2014 S. Karger AG, Basel.

Male infertility is a common and complex disease in urology and andrology, and for many years there has been no effective surgical treatment. With the emergence of microsurgery and assisted reproductive medicine (IVF/ICSI), rapid development has been achieved in the treatment of male infertility. The Center for Male Reproductive Medicine and Microsurgery at Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University has been playing an important leading role in developing microsurgical techniques for the management of male infertility. The development of microsurgical treatment of male infertility in China has experienced the 3 periods of emerging, making, and boosting ever since its systematic introduction from Weill Cornell Medical College 15 years ago. At present, many Chinese hospitals have adopted microsurgery in the management of male infertility, which has contributed to the initial establishment of a microsurgical treatment system for male infertility in China. However, some deficiencies do exist concerning microsurgical treatment of male infertility, as in normalized technical training programs for competent surgeons, unified criteria for evaluation of surgical outcomes, and detailed postoperative follow-up data. This article presents an overview on the 15-year development of microsurgical management of male infertility in China, points out the existing deficiencies, and offers some propositions for the promotion of its development.

In this work, the optical properties of potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) waveguides in the visible and near-infrared region are reported. The KTP waveguides were fabricated using 550 keV proton implantation at room temperature, and the refractive index profiles of the implanted region in the visible and near-infrared region were reconstructed. The profiles of the guided modes were measured through the end-face coupling method with both 632.8 and 1539 nm laser sources and then compared with the simulation results using the beam propagation method. Optical transmission and Raman spectra in the original substrate and waveguide active region were measured to study microstructural changes. The propagation loss of the TM0-mode at 632.8 nm was also measured.

This paper investigates the feasibility of the resonant metalens for the imaging beyond the diffraction limit using a single sensor in the far-field. It is shown that the resonant metalens can be related to the super-resonance phenomenon. We demonstrate that the super-resonance supports the enhancement of the information capacity of an imaging system, which is responsible for the subwavelength imaging of the probed objects by using a single sensor in combination with a broadband illumination. Such imaging concept has its unique advantage of producing real-time data when an object is illuminated by broadband waves, without the harsh requirements such as near-field scanning, mechanical scanning, or antenna arrays. The proposed method is expected to find its applications in nanolithography, detection, sensing, and subwavelength imaging in the near future.

We propose and design a kind of annular focusing lens based on transformation optics. Based on the method of eigen-mode expansions, closed-form expressions are derived to analyze the proposed annular lens rigorously. We show that the annular lens has excellent focusing property. Even when a barrier (such as a conducting cylinder) exists in the center of the lens, the analytical results demonstrate that the waves are still guided to propagate smoothly and focused on a spot.

We present the occurrence of bright modes and dark modes in spoof localized surface plasmons (LSPs) generated by ultrathin corrugated metallic disks. As two such disks with asymmetric geometries are placed in close proximity, we find that dark modes (in multipoles) of one disk emerge by coupling with the bright modes (in dipoles) of the other disk. Then we further observe multiple Fano resonances due to destructive interferences of dark modes with the overlapping and broadened bright modes. These Fano line-shapes clearly exhibit the strong polarization dependence. We design and fabricate the ultrathin corrugated bi-disk structure in the microwave frequency, and the measurement results show reasonable agreement with theoretical predictions and numerical simulations. Such multiple Fano resonances could be exploited for the plasmonic devices at lower frequencies.

The aim of the present study is to investigate the expressions of ATP-sensitive K(+) channels (KATP) in pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) and the relationship with p38 MAPK signal pathway in rats. Male SD rat PASMCs were cultured in vitro, and a model of hypoxia and hypercapnia was reconstructed. PASMCs were divided to normal (N), hypoxia-hypercapnia (H), hypoxia-hypercapnia+DMSO incubation (HD), hypoxia-hypercapnia+SB203580 (inhibitor of p38 MAPK pathway) incubation (HS) and hypoxia-hypercapnia+Anisomycin (agonist of p38 MAPK pathway) incubation (HA) groups. Western blot was used to detect the protein expression of SUR2B and Kir6.1; semi-quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to detect the mRNA expression of SUR2B and Kir6.1. The results demonstrated that: (1) Compared with N, H, HD and HS groups, the expressions of Kir6.1 mRNA and protein in PASMCs of HA group were decreased significantly (P < 0.01), but there were no differences among N, H, HD and HS groups (P > 0.05); (2) Compared with N group, the expressions of SUR2B mRNA and protein in H, HD, HS and HA groups were increased significantly (P < 0.05), but there were no differences among H, HD, HS and HA groups (P > 0.05). The results imply that: (1) Hypoxia-hypercapnia, SB203580 didn't change the expressions of Kir6.1 mRNA and protein in PASMCs, but Anisomycin decreased the expressions of Kir6.1 mRNA and protein, so Kir6.1 may be regulated by the other subfamily of MAPK pathway; (2) Hypoxia-hypercapnia raised SUR2B mRNA and protein expressions in PASMCs, but SB203580 and Anisomycin did not affect the changes, so the increasing of SUR2B mRNA and protein induced by hypoxia-hypercapnia may be not depend on p38 MAPK pathway.

Based on the dispersion relation, surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) or spoof SPPs are always propagating surface waves when the operating frequency is below the asymptotic limit - the surface plasma frequency. Here we propose a method to control the rejections of spoof SPPs using metamaterial particles. By introducing electrically resonant metamaterials near an ultrathin corrugated metallic strip - the spoof SPP waveguide - to produce tight coupling and mismatch of surface impedance, we show that the SPP modes are rejected near the resonant frequencies within the propagating band. Through the modulation of scaling factor of metamaterial particles, we can manipulate the rejections of SPP modes from narrowband to broadband. Both simulation and experiment results verify the tunability of SPP rejections, which have important applications in filtering SPP waves in plasmonic circuits and systems.

We propose a tunable strategy for the ultrathin mantle cloak via metasurface. The tunable cloak is implemented by loading varactor diodes between two neighboring horizontal metallic strips which constitute the metasurface. We demonstrate that the varactor diodes enable the capacitive reactance of the metasurface to be tunable from -157 ? to -3 ? when the DC bias voltage is properly changed. The active metasurface is then explored to cloak conformally a conducting cylinder. Both numerical and experiment results show that the cloaking frequency can be continuously controlled from 2.3 GHz to 3.7 GHz by appropriately adjusting the bias voltage. The flexible tunability and good cloaking performance are further examined by the measured field distributions. The advanced features of tunability, low profile, and conformal ability of the ultrathin cloak pave the way for practical applications of cloaking devices.

A broadband and broad-angle low-scattering metasurface is designed, fabricated, and characterized. Based on the optimization algorithm and far-field scattering pattern analysis, we propose a rapid and efficient method to design metasurfaces, which avoids the large amount of time-consuming electromagnetic simulations. Full-wave simulation and measurement results show that the proposed metasurface is insensitive to the polarization of incident waves, and presents good scattering-reduction properties for oblique incident waves.

Carcinoma progression is associated with the loss of epithelial features and the acquisition of a mesenchymal phenotype, a process known as epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Resveratrol, a natural polyphenolic compound found in grapes, berries and peanuts, has a wide range of pharmacological properties, including anti-tumor metastasis properties. The underlying mechanism through which resveratrol inhibits metastasis of prostate cancer (PCa) is not yet fully understood; however, it is thought to be associated with the disruption of EMT. In the present study, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was used to trigger EMT in PC-3 and LNCaP PCa cell lines, and the cell lines were subsequently treated with resveratrol. The results demonstrated that exposure of PC-3 and LNCaP cells to LPS resulted in morphological alterations characteristic of EMT, as well as an increase in the expression of the mesenchymal marker vimentin and a decrease in the expression of E?cadherin. In addition, LPS exposure resulted in an increase in cell motility, along with an upregulation of the transcription factor glioma-associated oncogene homolog 1 (Gli1). However, treatment with resveratrol inhibited LPS-induced morphological changes, decreased the expression of LPS-induced markers of EMT and inhibited the expression of Gli1, resulting in the inhibition of in vitro cell motility and invasiveness. These results provide a novel perspective for the anti-invasion mechanism of resveratrol, suggesting that the effect is in part due to its ability to inhibit the EMT process through the Hedgehog signaling pathway.

Independent control of differently-polarized waves using anisotropic gradient-index metamaterials.

We propose a kind of anisotropic gradient-index (GRIN) metamaterials, which can be used to control differently-polarized waves independently. We show that two three- dimensional (3D) planar lenses made of such anisotropic GRIN metamaterials are able to make arbitrary beam deflections for the vertical (or horizontal) polarization but have no response to the horizontal (or vertical) polarization. Then the vertically- and horizontally-polarized waves are separated and controlled independently to deflect to arbitrarily different directions by designing the anisotropic GRIN planar lenses. We make experimental verifications of the lenses using such a special metamaterial, which has both electric and magnetic responses simultaneously to reach approximately equal permittivity and permeability. Hence excellent impedance matching is obtained between the GRIN planar lenses and the air. The measurement results demonstrate good performance on the independent controls of differently-polarized waves, as observed in the numerical simulations.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the roles of calcium-activated chloride channels (Cl(Ca)) in the two-phase hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV). The second pulmonary artery branches were dissected from male Sprague-Dawley rats, and the changes in vascular tone were measured by using routine blood vascular perfusion in vitro. The result showed that, under normoxic conditions, Cl(Ca) inhibitors (NFA and IAA-94) significantly relaxed second pulmonary artery contracted by norepinephrine (P < 0.01), but merely had effects on KCl-induced second pulmonary artery contractions. A biphasic contraction response was induced in second pulmonary artery ring pre-contracted with norepinephrine exposed to hypoxic conditions for at least one hour, but no biphasic contraction was observed in pulmonary rings pre-contracted with KCl. NFA and IAA-94 significantly attenuated phase II sustained hypoxic contraction (P < 0.01), and also attenuated phase I vasodilation, but had little effect on phase I contraction. These results suggest that Cl(Ca) is an important component forming phase II contraction in secondary pulmonary artery, but not involved in phase I contraction.

A three-dimensional (3D) highly-directive emission system is proposed to enable beam shaping and beam steering capabilities in wideband frequencies. It is composed of an omnidirectional source antenna and several 3D gradient-refractive-index (GRIN) lenses. To engineer a broadband impedance match, the design method for these 3D lenses is established under the scenario of free-space excitation by using a planar printed monopole. For realizations and demonstrations, a kind of GRIN metamaterial is proposed, which is constructed by non-uniform fractal geometries. Due to the non-resonant and deep-subwavelength features of the fractal elements, the resulting 3D GRIN metamaterial lenses have extra wide bandwidth (3 to 7.5 GHz), and are capable of manipulating electromagnetic wavefronts accurately, advancing the state of the art of available GRIN lenses. The proposal for the versatile highly-directive emissions has been confirmed by simulations and measurements, showing that not only the number of beams can be arbitrarily tailored but also the beam directions can be steerable. The proposal opens a new way to control broadband highly-directive emissions with pre-designed directions, promising great potentials in modern wireless communication systems.

Results: Compared with M group, the IL-1beta concentration, NF-kappaB p65 and TLR4 protein,NF-kappaB p65 and TLR4 mRNA of XBJIL group, XBJI(M) group, XBJI(H) group expression decreased in varying degrees,and decreased most obviously all in XBJI(M) group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01); Myocardical structural damage was serious in M group, and improved after treatment XBJI, the most obvious was the XBJI(M).

Schistosomiasis remains of considerable public health concern in many tropical and subtropical regions of the world, including the People's Republic of China. The effectiveness of schistosomiasis control interventions are, among other factors, governed by the social-ecological context. However, eco-social determinants of schistosomiasis are poorly understood, particularly at the household or village levels. In the current study, residents in 26 villages of Eryuan county, Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China, were screened for Schistosoma japonicum infection with a serological assay that was followed by stool examination for sero-positive individuals. Bayesian multilevel models with spatial random effects were employed to profile the S. japonicum infection risk based on known transmission sites of S. japonicum that are scattered across individual land parcels in this part of the country. The key risk factors identified with this approach were the absence of a sanitary stall house for livestock and presence of living and infected intermediate host snails in close proximity. We conclude that a spatially explicit Bayesian multilevel approach can deepen our understanding of eco-social determinants that govern schistosomiasis transmission at a small geographical scale.

Far-field imaging beyond the Rayleigh limit is one of the most important challenges in optics, microwave, and ultrasonics. We propose a novel sparsity-promoted super-oscillation imaging scheme for reconstructing more universal objects in subwavelength scales, which solves a weighted optimization problem constrained by lp-norm-based sparsity regularization (0?p?1). We demonstrate numerically that the proposed imaging technique improves the resolution related to existing approaches remarkably for the case of very high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), including the traditional super-oscillation imaging and sparsity-based super-resolution imaging. The standard superoscillation based super-resolution imaging approach can be regarded as the first-iteration solution of the proposed scheme. Numerical results for one- and two-dimensional super-resolution imaging are presented for validation.

We performed a large, long-term cohort study to evaluate the association of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system gene polymorphisms and baseline phenotypes to all-cause mortality among patients with angiographically confirmed coronary atherosclerosis. The study included 1075 subjects who underwent coronary angiography. Patients were genotyped for eight polymorphisms (rs4343, rs5186, rs5182, rs5049, rs5051, rs699, rs4762, and rs1799998), and their baseline plasma angiotensin II and aldosterone levels were measured. The interval between baseline and follow-up time-points ranged from 6.39 to 9.59 years. The results of multivariate regression analysis further indicated that high baseline angiotensin II levels (1.226 (1.024-1.468), p = 0.027) were independently associated with all-cause death. Therefore, we found that an increased baseline plasma angiotensin II level was associated with higher long-term all-cause mortality, even after correcting for established cardiovascular risk factors.

Ergoline derivative (6aR,9R)-4-(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl)-N-phenyl-9-(pyrrolidine-1-carbonyl)-6,6a,8,9-tetrahydroindolo[4,3-fg]quinoline-7(4H)-carboxamide (1), a CXCR3 antagonist, also inhibits human histamine H3 receptors (H3R) and represents a structurally novel H3R inverse agonist chemotype. It displays favorable pharmacokinetic and in vitro safety profiles, and served as a lead compound in a program to explore ergoline derivatives as potential drug candidates for the treatment of narcolepsy. A key objective of this work was to enhance the safety and efficacy profiles of 1, while minimizing its duration of action to mitigate the episodes of insomnia documented with previously reported clinical candidates during the night following administration. Modifications to the ergoline core at positions?1, 6 and 8 were systematically investigated, and derivative 23 (1-((4aR,8R,9aR)-8-(hydroxymethyl)-1-(2-((R)-2-methylpyrrolidin-1-yl)ethyl)-4,4a,7,8,9,9a-hexahydroindolo[1,14-fg]quinolin-6(1H)-yl)ethanone) was identified as a promising lead compound. Derivative 23 has a desirable pharmacokinetic profile and demonstrated efficacy by enhancing brain concentrations of tele-methylhistamine, a major histamine metabolite. This validates the potential of the ergoline scaffold to serve as a template for the development of H3R inverse agonists.

Indications for concomitant tricuspid repair at the initial operation have not been well established. The selection of high-risk preoperative patients is of great importance in this situation. Methods: Six databases were searched to access eligible articles reporting potential risk factors for the development of residual TR. The pooled analysis of risk factors was based on odds ratios or mean differences with their 95% confidence intervals. Results: A total of 3,138 patients with 487 residual TR in 11 studies were analyzed. Of the 14 candidate parameters in our meta-analysis, 10 factors, i.e. older age, female gender, atrial fibrillation, rheumatic etiology, mitral valve surgery, previous valve surgery, a long time from onset to surgery, 2+/3+ TR and enlarged left and right atria, were found to be significantly associated with the development of residual TR. Conclusions: Our study highlights the role of the above preoperative risk factors in the development of residual TR after isolated left-sided valve surgery and emphasizes the need of further studies to investigate other potential predictors. Moreover, predictive models or scoring systems for the identification of patients at a high risk for developing late TR are urgently needed. © 2014 S. Karger AG, Basel.

Exploiting the input-output process of low-Q cavities confining nitrogen-vacancy centers, we present an efficient entanglement concentration protocol on electron spin state in decoherence free subspace. Less entangled state can be concentrated to maximally entangled state with the assistance of single photon detection. With its robustness and scalability, the present protocol is immune to dephasing and can be further applied to quantum repeaters and distributed quantum computation.

A planar waveguide structure in a chalcohalide glass was fabricated by dual-energy C ion implantation with energies of 5.5 and 6.0 MeV at fluences of 7.0×10¹? and 8.0×10¹?ions cm?², respectively. A waveguide with a thickness of 5.9 ?m was formed. SRIM 2013 was used to simulate the defect distribution fabricated by C ion implantation. Images of the polished end face of the C-implanted chalcohalide glass were measured with a metallographic microscope using reflected polarized light. The micro-Raman spectra were measured in air. The near-field intensity distributions were investigated at visible (633 nm) and near-infrared (1300, 1400, and 1539 nm) bands.

We investigated the second and third harmonic generation (SHG and THG) in ZnO nanorods (NRs) by using a femtosecond laser (optical parametric amplifier with tunable wavelengths) with a long excitation wavelength of 1350 nm and a low repetition rate of 1 kHz. The damage threshold for ZnO NRs in this case was sufficiently large, enabling us to observe the competition between SHG and THG. The transition from red to blue emission and the mixing of red and blue light with different ratios were successfully demonstrated by simply varying excitation intensity, implying the potential applications of ZnO NRs in all-optical display.

Plant responses to phytohormone stimuli are the most important biological features for plants to survive in a complex environment. Cytokinin regulates growth and nutrient homeostasis, such as the phosphate (Pi) starvation response and Pi uptake in plants. However, the mechanisms underlying how cytokinin participates in Pi uptake and Pi signaling are largely unknown. In this study, we found that OsARF16 is required for the cytokinin response and is involved in the negative regulation of Pi uptake and Pi signaling by cytokinin.

Scaling devices that can shrink or enlarge an object are designed using transformation optics. The electromagnetic scattering properties of such scaling devices with anisotropic parameters are rigorously analyzed using the eigenmode expansion method. If the radius of the virtual object is smaller than that of the real object, it is a shrinking device with positive material parameters; if the radius of the virtual object is larger than the real one, it is an enlarging device with positive or negative material parameters. Hence, a scaling device can make a dielectric or metallic object look smaller or larger. The rigorous analysis shows that the scattering coefficients of the scaling devices are the same as those of the equivalent virtual objects. When the radius of the virtual object approaches zero, the scaling device will be an invisibility cloak. In such a case, the scattering effect of the scaling device will be sensitive to material parameters of the device.

We propose a kind of chiral metamaterial inspired from the fractal concept. The Hilbert fractal perturbation in the twisted split ring resonator element results in compact metamaterial and breaking mirror symmetry, which readily forms chirality over triple bands. The discrepancy between co-polarization conversion and cross-polarization conversion over multiple bands can be explored for multifunctional devices. A multiband circular polarizer is then numerically and experimentally studied in the X band based on the bilayered twisted Hilbert resonator with mutual 90° rotation. The ability of transforming linearly polarized incident waves to circularly polarized waves is unambiguously demonstrated with high conversion efficiency and large polarization extinction ratio of more than 20 dB across dual bands. Moreover, exceptionally strong optical activity and circular dichroism are also observed.

Considering the wavefront error of KH(2)PO(4) (KDP) crystal is difficult to control through face fly cutting process because of surface shape deformation during vacuum suction, an error compensation technique based on a spiral turning method is put forward. An in situ measurement device is applied to measure the deformed surface shape after vacuum suction, and the initial surface figure error, which is obtained off-line, is added to the in situ surface shape to obtain the final surface figure to be compensated. Then a three-axis servo technique is utilized to cut the final surface shape. In traditional cutting processes, in addition to common error sources such as the error in the straightness of guide ways, spindle rotation error, and error caused by ambient environment variance, three other errors, the in situ measurement error, position deviation error, and servo-following error, are the main sources affecting compensation accuracy. This paper discusses the effect of these three errors on compensation accuracy and provides strategies to improve the final surface quality. Experimental verification was carried out on one piece of KDP crystal with the size of ?270 mm×11 mm. After one compensation process, the peak-to-valley value of the transmitted wavefront error dropped from 1.9? (?=632.8 nm) to approximately 1/3?, and the mid-spatial-frequency error does not become worse when the frequency of the cutting tool trajectory is controlled by use of a low-pass filter.

Under favorable conditions, Caenorhabditis elegans larvae grow into reproductive adults after a series of molting cycles. When environmental conditions are harsh, they arrest as dauer larvae. Dafachronic acid (DA), a C. elegans steroid hormone, is required for reproductive development. Here, we report a mass spectrometry (MS) method for absolute quantitation of DA in C. elegans. The extraction of DA from C. elegans was optimized to achieve a recovery rate of greater than 83%. The MS sensitivity to DA increased 100-fold after carboxyl group derivatization with 2-picolylamine. High-resolution selected ion monitoring (HR-SIM) on a Q-Orbitrap mass spectrometer Q Exactive outperformed targeted-MS2 on the same instrument and selected reaction monitoring (SRM) on a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer TSQ Quantum Discovery. With a limit of quantification as low as 1 pg of DA, the HR-SIM method enables absolute quantification of endogenous DA during the reproductive development of C. elegans. We found that in wild-type (WT) worms, DA increases from 0.04 ± 0.02 ng/mg protein in the L1 larval stage to 1.21 ± 0.67 ng/mg protein in the L2 larval stage and decreases again after the L3 stage. In comparison, four genetic mutants that have a constitutive dauer-formation phenotype due to disrupted insulin, TGF-?, or cGMP signaling all have a very low DA level in the L2 stage (below 15% of the WT). These mutants are able to escape the dauer fate and most of them grow into fertile adults when supplied with exogenous DA. Therefore, a DA spike in the L2 stage is critical for the reproductive development of C. elegans.

NAD(+)-dependent deacetylase SIRT1 is a master regulator of nucleosome positioning and chromatin structure, thereby reprogramming gene expression. In acute inflammation, chromatin departs from, and returns to, homeostasis in an orderly sequence. This sequence depends on shifts in NAD(+) availability for SIRT1 activation and deacetylation of signaling proteins, which support orderly gene reprogramming during acute inflammation by switching between euchromatin and heterochromatin. In contrast, in chronic inflammation and cancer, limited availability of NAD(+) and reduced expression of SIRT1 may sustain aberrant chromatin structure and functions. SIRT1 also influences inflammation and cancer by directly deacetylating targets like NF?B p65 and p53. Here, we review SIRT1 in the context of inflammation and cancer.

A best evidence topic in adult valvular surgery was written according to a structured protocol. The question addressed was Is a rigid tricuspid annuloplasty ring superior to a flexible band when correcting secondary tricuspid regurgitation (TR)? A total of 166 papers were found using the reported search, of which, 13 presented the best evidence to answer the clinical question. The authors, country, journal, date of publication, patient group studied, study type, relevant outcomes and results of these papers are tabulated. All the 13 papers were retrospective studies, from which 4 were case-control studies comparing the rigid ring annuloplasty approach with the flexible band technique, eight case series and one case report. From the first three case-control studies, we conclude that more progression to moderate-to-severe TR in the flexible band group than rigid ring group. However, the fourth paper reported that both rigid and flexible systems provide acceptable early tricuspid valve repair results, but the use of a rigid ring increases risk of subsequent ring dehiscence. Another rare complication about the rigid ring was described by Galiñanes et al. We conclude that although there are relatively less risk of ring dehiscence or ring fracture in the flexible group, the rigid ring, particularly the new three-dimensional MC3 ring, is inclined to be better than the flexible band in terms of a sustained effect for maintaining stable postoperative regurgitation grade according to the current available evidences. However, due to the limited controlled studies and their retrospective design, the results should be confirmed by prospective studies with a large number of patients.

We analyze and experimentally realize coplanar imaging of transverse-electric (TE) modes surface waves using weakly anisotropic metasurface consisting of non-periodic subwavelength U-shaped metallic structures. Such metallic structures with the exciting coplanar dipole are integrated on the top surface of a thin dielectric board. A circuit model is utilized to analyze the characteristics of the surface waves supported by the metasurface. By varying the geometrical parameters of the U-shaped metallic structures, the phases of surface waves are modulated, from which a planar lens is presented for the TE-mode coplanar imaging. The analyses and measurements show that anisotropies of the U-shaped metallic structures have little influence on the imaging properties of the planar lens. The measurement results have good agreements to numerical simulations.

Entrapment of a microwire related to intracranial endovascular therapy is an uncommon complication. A 64-year-old man with symptomatic basilar artery stenosis was treated with stenting. A 300 cm Synchro microwire became trapped in the P1 segment of the left posterior cerebral artery during the procedure. The decision was made to leave the microwire in place, considering that aggressive retrieval procedures could cause injury to the cerebral vasculature. The entrapped microwire was later inadvertently dislocated and removed while pulling the microwire back into the femoral artery with a looped catheter from the left femoral access. This demonstrates that, although entrapment of a microwire during endovascular therapy is a rare event, an optimal salvage technique needs to be explored further.

In developing our video relationships, we compare around 5 million PubMed articles to our library of over 4,500 methods videos. In some cases the language used in the PubMed abstracts makes matching that content to a JoVE video difficult. In other cases, there happens not to be any content in our video library that is relevant to the topic of a given abstract. In these cases, our algorithms are trying their best to display videos with relevant content, which can sometimes result in matched videos with only a slight relation.
