The high cost and limited natural abundance of platinum hinder its widespread applications as the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalyst for fuel cells. Carbon-supported materials containing metals such as Fe or Co as well as nitrogen have been proposed to reduce the cost without obvious lowering the performance compared to Pt-based electrocatalysts. In this work, based on the pyrolyzed corrin structure of vitamin B12 on the simultaneously reduced graphene support (g-VB12), we construct an efficient oxygen reduction electrocatalyst with very positive half-wave potential (only ?30 mV deviation from Pt/C), high selectivity (electron transfer number close to 4) and excellent durability (only 11 mV shift of the half-wave potential after 10?000 potential cycles). The admirable performance of this electrocatalyst can be attributed to the homogeneous distribution of abundant Co-Nx active sites, and a well-defined three-dimensional mesoporous structure of the N-doped graphene support. The high activity and long-term stability of the low cost g-VB12 make it a promising ORR electrocatalyst in alkaline fuel cells.

The present paper discusses how to monitor and analyze the relative change in muscle oxygen content in quadriceps tissue, and measures and records the change in blood lactate acid concentration, blood volume and heart rate when eight players who are good at middle-distance races perform grade incremental intensity exercise on cycle ergometer by using noninvasive tissue oximeter with near infrared spectroscopy produced by China independently. The results show that muscle oxygen content has a close relationship (p < 0.01)with exercise load, blood lactic acid, blood volume and heart rate. When determined muscle oxygen content and blood lactate acid concentration was determined for many times to the same person, the test proved regular falling and rising. There was no significant changes when analyzed each set of the data was analyzed through horizontal comparison. It verifies we can judge the subjects's endurable exercise intensity and the upward inflection point of blood lactic acid corresponding to the decreasing inflection point of blood lactate acid concentration & muscle oxygen content according to the muscle oxygen content change of skeletal muscle while exercising. This paper shows NIRS research status and present situation in sports field through investigation, and analyzes the main trouble and research tendency in the future. By understanding NIRS technology gradually, the authors can realize that the muscle oxygen content which measured by noninvasive tissue oximeter using near infrared spectroscopy produced by China independently is a sensitive, nondestructive, up-to-date and reliable index, it has irreplaceable advantages when compared with traditional invasive, excised and fussy test methods.

Our single-chain mechanical measurements, however, reveal that the natural cellulose is as flexible as common synthetic polymers at the single-chain level, creating new opportunities in the designing of nano materials.

Abstract Objective: To explore the relationship between ambulatory blood pressure and arterial atherosclerosis and provide simple and easy reference indicators for the prediction, prevention and prognosis of cardiovascular events in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. Method: This prospective study consecutively collected clinical data of 114 ESRD hospitalized patients in the Department of Nephrology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University during August 2012 to December 2012. The data included laboratory data, the ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), carotid ultrasound, two-dimensional echocardiography and the prognosis scores of the death risk. Results: (1) A series of ABPM parameters were closely associated with atherosclerosis (p???0.05). Two new marine-derived caryophyllene-type sesquiterpenoids, rumphellols A and B (1 and 2), were obtained from the gorgonian coral, Rumphella antipathies, collected off the waters of Taiwan. Although caryophyllene-type sesquiterpenes are rarely found in marine organisms, compounds of this type could be principal components of R. antipathies. The structures of new Compounds 1 and 2 were determined by analysis of their spectroscopic data, including 1D and 2D NMR experiments. Caryophyllene 1 and 2 were evaluated in terms of their anti-inflammatory activity by examining their inhibitory effects on the generation of superoxide anions and the release of elastase by human neutrophils.

Two layered V-B-O contained polyoxometalate (POM) net structures, denoted as SUT-12 and SUT-13, are reported here. SUT-12 was synthesized by the boric acid flux method, and it represents the first 2D structure constructed from the V6B20 vanadoborate cluster. SUT-13 was synthesized by the hydrothermal method and constructed from V12B6P12 vanadium borophosphate clusters. In both structures, the vanadoborate or vanadium borophosphate clusters were linked through in situ formed Zn(DETA)2 or Cu(DETA)2 complexes. Surprisingly, for all DETA molecules in the two metal complexes, there is one dangling amine group when it is coordinated to the metal. The phenomenon of the dangling amine group feature is abnormal and the Cu(DETA)2 complexes in SUT-13 were taken as an example and studied by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations in order to understand this unusual feature.

Evaluation of the effectiveness of refuge strategies involved in cotton bollworm Bt resistance management would be aided by technologies that allow monitoring and quantification of key factors that affect the process under field conditions. We hypothesized that characterization of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes in adult bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) moths may aid in determining the larval host that they developed upon. We found moths reared from larvae fed on peanut, soybean or cotton, respectively, could be differentiated using isotopic analyses that also corresponded to their respective larval host origins. These techniques were then used to classify feral second-generation bollworm moths caught in Bt-cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) fields into different populations based on their isotopic signatures. In 2006?2007 feral moths captured in Bt-cotton fields predominantly correlated with the peanut (Arachis hypogea) having served as their larval host indicating this is the most important refuge crop for Bt-susceptible bollworm individuals (providing 58%-64% individuals) during independent moth peaks for the second-generation in North China. The remaining feral moths correlated with soybean (Glycine max) (0-10%), other C3 plant (20%-22%) and non-C3 plant (12%-14%) host types also provided some Bt-sensitive moths. Field observations showed that peanut constitutes the primary refuge crop contributing to sustaining Bt-susceptible moths dispersing into cotton in North China, Maize/soybean have previously been considered to be the most effective refuge crops in North China. These results suggest that peanut may be a more effective refuge to sustain Bt-susceptible bollworm individuals and reduce the risk of development of a Bt-resistant biotype. Peganumine A (1), a new dimeric ?-carboline alkaloid characterized by a unique 3,9-diazatetracyclo[6.5.2.0(1,9).0(3,8)]pentadec-2-one scaffold, was isolated from the seeds of Peganum harmala. The structure including the absolute configuration was determined by spectroscopic data, X-ray crystallography, ECD calculation, and CD exciton chirality approaches. Compound 1 showed moderate cytotoxic activity against MCF-7, PC-3, and HepG2 cells and selective effects on HL-60 cells with an IC50 value of 5.8 ?M.

Gated molecular encapsulations, with baskets of type 1, are postulated to occur by the mechanism in which solvent molecule penetrates the inner space of 1, through one of its apertures, while the residing guest simultaneously departs the cavity. In the transition state of the exchange, three pyridine-based gates are proposed to assume an open position with both incoming solvent and departing guest molecules interacting with the concave surface of the host. The More O'Ferrall-Jencks diagram and linear free energy relationships (LFERs) suggest a more advanced departure of the guest when bigger solvents partake in the displacement.

To simplify the macrocyclic fragment and to modify the zinc binding group of the natural product apicidin, two series of S-hexyl (heptyl) ethanethioate derivatives were designed and synthesized. Twenty-six compounds were synthesized and confirmed with 1H NMR, IR, MS and HR-MS spectrum, which were not reported. Take vorinostat as control, their antiporliferative activities against cancer cell lines, MCF-7 and HL-60, were tested with MTT assay or trypan blue staining method. Generally in both series it was found that, the chiral carbon atom at 7 position is not necessary, compounds II-1, II-3, II-6 and II-13 showed good activity on HL-60 cells in vitro, with the IC50 values less than 10 micromol x L(-1). II-7 and II-8 showed stronger activity against MCF-7 than Vorinostat, with the IC50 of 3.19 and 6.29 micromol x L(-1), respectively.

A 10??MeV/c positive muon beam was stopped in helium gas of a few mbar in a magnetic field of 5 T. The muon "swarm" has been efficiently compressed from a length of 16 cm down to a few mm along the magnetic field axis (longitudinal compression) using electrostatic fields. The simulation reproduces the low energy interactions of slow muons in helium gas. Phase space compression occurs on the order of microseconds, compatible with the muon lifetime of 2???s. This paves the way for the preparation of a high-quality low-energy muon beam, with an increase in phase space density relative to a standard surface muon beam of 10^{7}. The achievable phase space compression by using only the longitudinal stage presented here is of the order of 10^{4}.

Dermatophagoides farinae, a domestic mite species, produces some of the most potent allergens that contribute to allergy in China and worldwide. We sought to clone and express the group 8 allergen of D. farinae (Der f 8) to investigate its IgE-binding reactivity. The full-length cDNA encoding Der f 8 was generated by using RT-PCR and 5' RACE, cloned into pCold-TF expression vector, confirmed by nucleotide sequencing, sub-cloned into pET-28b (+), and transfected into E. coli BL21 cells for expression. After purification by nickel affinity chromatography and identified by SDS-PAGE, the recombinant Der f 8 bound with sera from 40.9 % (9/22) of mite-allergic patients according to ELISA testing. Analysis of the recombinant DNA sequence revealed a 231 amino acid open reading frame encoding a protein with a derived molecular mass of 26.4 kDa and an isoelectric point of 6.84. The deduced amino acid sequence has nine phosphorylation sites, displaying strong homology with glutathione S-transferase, and its secondary structure comprises alpha helix (45.5 %), extended strand (11.3 %), and random coils (43.3 %). BLAST through the National Center for Biotechnology Information database and alignment identified similarity with group 8 allergens or glutathione S-transferases of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Suidasia medanensis, Lepidoglyphus destructor, Glycyphagus domesticus, and Aleuroglyphus ovatus (64, 65, 53, 53, and 50 %, respectively). The first recombinant Der f 8 protein produced in full length successfully bound with patient IgE, demonstrating the importance of Der f 8 in mite allergy.

A cellulose-rich biomass was modified as a new amphoteric sorbent to eliminate toxic Cu(II) and Cr(VI) from wastewater. The product (WSCA, which stands for modified wheat straw containing both cationic and anionic characters) presents high sorption capacities for the two ions which was evidenced by the comparison with unmodified wheat and other similar samples. Kinetic data and sorption equilibrium isotherms were conducted in batch process. The sorption kinetic analysis revealed that sorption of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) followed the pseudo second-order model well during the whole sorption process. The linear Langmuir isotherm model could perfectly describe the equilibrium data for Cu(II), while the sorption data of Cr(VI) were well fitted by the Freundlich. Results of the static test illustrated the complicated interactions between Cr(VI)/Cu(II) and WSCA including complexation and/or electrostatic attraction mechanisms.

The soil water storage, growth development, biomass and yield in maize/soybean intercropping system under different separation methods were measured to analyze the resource competition of the intercropping crops. The treatments included no shoot or root separation (T1), shoot and root separation (T2), only root separation (T3), and only shoot separation (T4). Results indicated that compared to others, the average soil moisture content in the 0-120 cm soil layer decreased by 3.1%-12.9% in maize line, and by 2.8%-12.5% in soybean line for T1. Compared to T1, maize growth stage in T2, T3 and T4 came late, and the plant height, leaf area and cumulative total biomass, yield and yield components all decreased, while the trends found for soybean were the opposite. In summary, the changes of crop growth and yield in the maize/soybean intercropping system were driven by the interactions of above- and below-ground parts, and the below-ground part played a more important role.

An attribute weight calculation method which used a Bayesian network and the least squares distance method was proposed to assign different weights to different attributes in cognitive diagnosis. This method is independent of any specific cognitive diagnostic models, so it is practicable to consider attribute weight not only in the models with explicit expression but also in item response theory-based cognitive diagnostic methods. Simulation studies showed that the data fit for the least squares distance method was excellent and the weighted status can yield higher correct classification rates than the unweighted status. The weighted status had a promising performance in recognizing the knowledge states of examinees for various slippage probabilities under different attribute hierarchies. The numbers of items and attributes could also affect the examinees' classification accuracy.

Zeolites have been widely used in industry owing to their ordered micropores and stable frameworks. The pore sizes and shapes are the key parameters that affect the selectivity and efficiency in their applications in catalysis, sorption, and separation. Zeolites with pores defined by 10 and 12 TO4 tetrahedra are often used for various catalytic processes. To optimize the performance of zeolites, it is extremely desirable to fine-tune the pore sizes/shapes. The first germanosilicate zeolite with a three-dimensional 11×11×12-ring channel system, PKU-16 (PKU, Peking University) is presented. Nanosized PKU-16 was structurally characterized by the new three-dimensional rotation electron diffraction (RED) technique. PKU-16 is structurally related to the zeolite ??polymorph?C (BEC, 12×12×12-ring channels) by rotating half of the four-rings in double mtw units.

The analysis of protein glycosylation is important for biomedical and biopharmaceutical research. Recent advances in LC-MS analysis have enabled the identification of glycosylation sites, the characterisation of glycan structures and the identification and quantification of glycoproteins and glycopeptides. However, this type of analysis remains challenging due to the low abundance of glycopeptides in complex protein digests, the microheterogeneity at glycosylation sites, ion suppression effects and the competition for ionisation by co-eluting peptides. Specific sample preparation is necessary for comprehensive and site-specific glycosylation analyses using MS. Therefore, researchers continue to pursue new columns to broaden their applications. The current manuscript covers recent literature published from 2008 to 2013. The stationary phases containing various chemical bonding methods or ligands immobilisation strategies on solid supports that selectively enrich N-linked or sialylated N-glycopeptides are categorised with either physical or chemical modes of binding. These categories include lectin affinity, hydrophilic interactions, boronate affinity, titanium dioxide affinity, hydrazide chemistry and other separation techniques. This review should aid in better understanding the syntheses and physicochemical properties of each type of stationary phases for enriching glycoproteins and glycopeptides.

The ectoenzyme CD39 hydrolyzes extracellular adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), which possesses pro-inflammatory properties. However, the role of CD39 in allergic asthma has not been fully elucidated. A total of 18 patients with persistent asthma who were allergic to house dust mites and 19 healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. The expression of CD39, GATA3, RAR-related orphan receptor ? (ROR-?t) and forkhead box P3 (FoxP3) mRNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was determined by SYBR-Green I quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). The cytokines interleukin (IL)-4, IL-17A, transforming growth factor ? (TGF-?) and DP.sIgE were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Our data demonstrated that the expression of CD39 mRNA in PBMCs from asthmatic patients was significantly lower compared to that in normal controls [(1.49±0.59)×10(-3) vs. (2.17±0.77)×10(-3), respectively; P<0.01]. CD39 mRNA was negatively correlated with serum IL-4, IL-17A and GATA3 expression (r=-0.468, P<0.05; r=-0.550, P<0.05; and r=-0.424, P<0.01, respectively) and positively correlated with FoxP3 and TGF-? expression (r=0.373, P<0.05; and r=0.425, P<0.05, respectively). There was no obvious correlation between CD39 and ROR-?t expression (r=-0.259, P=0.122). These data suggested that CD39 mRNA expression was downregulated in allergic asthma, which was positively correlated with serum IL-4, IL-17A and GATA3 expression and negatively correlated with serum TGF-? and FoxP3 expression, whereas there was no correlation with ROR-?t. Therefore, it was hypothesized that CD39 may participate in the occurrence and progression of allergic asthma.

An in situ thermally reduced graphene/polyethylene conductive composite with a segregated structure was fabricated, which achieved a high electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of up to 28.3-32.4 dB at an ultralow graphene loading of 0.660 vol.%. A new porous vanadoborate was synthesized by employing the scale chemistry theory with the vanadoborate cluster V10B28. The twofold interpenetrated lvt network was assembled with zinc-containing elliptical vanadoborate clusters and Zn polyhedra. The single lvt framework contains a three-dimensional 38×38×20 ring channel system with the pore size (24.7×12.7?Å) reaching the mesoscale, thus indicating the possibility of constructing 3D ordered mesopores with vanadoborate clusters. The porosity of the SUT-7 structure was confirmed by CO2 adsorption of the as-synthesized materials.

Ultrasound (US) and photoacoustic (PA) multimodality imaging has the advantage of combining good acoustic resolution with high optical contrast. The use of an all-optical scanhead for both imaging modalities can simplify integration of the two systems and miniaturize the imaging scanhead. Herein we propose and demonstrate an all-optical US/PA scanhead using a thin plate for optoacoustic generation in US imaging, a polymer microring resonator for acoustic detection, and a dichroic filter to switch between the two imaging modes by changing the laser wavelength. A synthetic-aperture focusing technique is used to improve the resolution and contrast. Phantom images demonstrate the feasibility of this design, and show that axial and lateral resolutions of 125 ?m and 2.52°, respectively, are possible.

Polyferric chloride (PFC) and poly (epichlorohydrin-dimethylamine) [P(EPI-DMA)] were applied as raw materials to prepare a novel inorganic-organic flocculant [PFC-P(EPI-DMA)] with various intrinsic viscosities (eta), basicity (B, OH/Fe molar ratio), and organic component fractions [omega(E)]. The PFC-P(EPI-DMA) prepared was then evaluated for the coagulation treatment of synthetic active dying wastewater and simulated ground water. Effects of B, and omega (E) on the Fe speciation distribution and coagulation performance of PFC-P(EPI-DMA) were comparatively examined as a function of coagulant dosage. The coagulation mechanism of PFC-P(EPI-DMA) was also discussed in this paper. Experimental results indicated the interaction effect of PFC and P (EPI-DMA) component in composite PFC-P (EPI-DMA). The effective Fe speciation content of PFC-EPI-DMA decreased with increasing omega(E), while it was maximized when eta = 850 mPa x As B value increased gradually, the Fe(b) concentration initially increased and then decreased, but the Fe(c) concentration kept continuously increasing. To some extent, higher eta and lower B value was favorable for the improvement of coagulation performance for coagulation treatment of both synthetic dyeing wastewater and simulated ground water. The omega (E) influence on the coagulation performance of PFC-P(EPI-DMA) was related to the treatment target. Both charge neutralization and adsorption bridging effect played roles in the coagulation process of the composite PFC-P(EPI-DMA).

In relation to dietary Na(+) intake and aldosterone levels, collecting duct principal cells are exposed to large variations in Na(+) transport. In these cells, Na(+) crosses the apical membrane via epithelial Na(+) channels (ENaC) and is extruded into the interstitium by Na,K-ATPase. The activity of ENaC and Na,K-ATPase must be highly coordinated to accommodate variations in Na(+) transport and minimize fluctuations in intracellular Na(+) concentration. We hypothesized that, independent of hormonal stimulus, cross-talk between ENaC and Na,K-ATPase coordinates Na(+) transport across apical and basolateral membranes. By varying Na(+) intake in aldosterone-clamped rats and overexpressing ?-ENaC or modulating apical Na(+) availability in cultured mouse collecting duct cells, enhanced apical Na(+) entry invariably led to increased basolateral Na,K-ATPase expression and activity. In cultured collecting duct cells, enhanced apical Na(+) entry increased the basolateral cell surface expression of Na,K-ATPase by inhibiting p38 kinase-mediated endocytosis of Na,K-ATPase. Our results reveal a new role for p38 kinase in mediating cross-talk between apical Na(+) entry via ENaC and its basolateral exit via Na,K-ATPase, which may allow principal cells to maintain intracellular Na(+) concentrations within narrow limits.

Renal denervation (RDN) has been shown to be safe and efficacious in reducing blood pressure in patients with resistant hypertension. In the present study, we describe a first-in-man report of the Iberis renal denervation device in a patient who underwent two RDN procedures: one via the femoral artery and one via the transulnar approach. RDN was performed in the patients right renal artery using an Iberis catheter via the transulnar approach, as the transfemoral or transradial arteries could not be approached due to their anatomic constraints. In summary, RDN via the transulnar approach is feasible and represents a technical alternative solution in certain patients.

Ultrathin, molecular-sieving membranes have great potential to realize high-flux, high-selectivity mixture separation at low energy cost. Current microporous membranes [pore size < 1 nanometer (nm)], however, are usually relatively thick. With the use of current membrane materials and techniques, it is difficult to prepare microporous membranes thinner than 20 nm without introducing extra defects. Here, we report ultrathin graphene oxide (GO) membranes, with thickness approaching 1.8 nm, prepared by a facile filtration process. These membranes showed mixture separation selectivities as high as 3400 and 900 for H2/CO2 and H2/N2 mixtures, respectively, through selective structural defects on GO.

We designed and prepared a spacious and gated basket of type 2 (V = 318 Å(3)) in ten synthetic steps. With the assistance of (1)H NMR spectroscopy, we found that the pyridine gates at the rim of 2 form a seam of N-H???N hydrogen bonds, thereby adopting right- (P) and left-handed (M) helical arrangements. The recognition characteristics of the smaller basket 1 (V = 226 Å(3)) and the larger 2 for various solvents as guests were quantified by (1)H NMR spectroscopy in CD2Cl2 (61 Å(3)), CDCl3 (75 Å(3)), CFCl3 (81 Å(3)) and CCl4 (89 Å(3)); the apparent guest binding equilibria Ka were found to be inversely proportional to the affinity of bulk solvents KS for populating each host. The rate of the P/M racemization (krac, s(-1)) was, for both 1 and 2, studied in all four solvents using dynamic NMR spectroscopy. From these experiments, two isokinetic relationships (?S++P/M vs. ?H++P/M) were identified with each one corresponding to a different mechanism of P/M racemization. A computational study (B3LYP/6-31+G**//PM6) of 1 and 2 in the gas phase indicates two competing racemization pathways: (a) RM1-2 describes a pivoting of a single gate followed by the rotation of the remaining two gates, while (b) RM3 depicts simultaneous (geared) rotation of all three gates. The racemization of the larger basket 2, in all four solvents (packing coefficient, PC = 0.19-0.28), conformed to one isokinetic relationship, which also coincided with the operation of the smaller basket 1 in CD2Cl2 (PC = 0.27). However, in CDCl3, CFCl3 and CCl4 (PC = 0.33-0.39), the mode of action of 1 appears to correlate with a different isokinetic relationship. Thus, we propose that the population of the baskets inner space (PC) determines the mechanism of P/M racemization. When PC < 0.3, the mechanism of operation is RM1-2, whereas, a greater packing, represented when PC > 0.3, enforces the geared RM3 mechanistic alternative.

Inherent optical properties are important marine optical parameters which are the basic input parameters of the radiative transfer model. Based on hyperspectral remote sensing reflectance and total absorption coefficient data measured in 2005 in the Bohai Sea, the nonlinear minimization model was firstly used to retrieve the inherent optical properties. The model was validated by in situ data. The averaged percent errors were 33.8%, 20.4%, 27.7%, 37.5%, 9.5% and 10.8% for the total absorption coefficients at 412, 440, 510, 555, 650 and 676 nm bands respectively. The main error sources of model were the uncertainty of the model parameters and measurement errors. According to the discussion, the spectral slope S has a slight influence on the retrieval of total absorption coefficients. However, the impact of the spectral power Y on the retrieval cannot be negligible. The model is suitable for hyperspectral data and can fulfill the gaps of inherent optical properties retrieval research in the Bohai Sea, so it can be used for hyperspectral remote sensing data to retrieve inherent optical properties.

In this paper, potato starch wastewater as culture medium was treated by the oleaginous yeast Lipomyces starkeyi to biosynthesize microbial lipid. The result indicated that carbon source types, carbon source concentration, nitrogen source types, nitrogen source concentration, inoculum size, and cultivation time all had a significant effect on cell growth and microbial lipid accumulation in batch cultures. A measure of 120 g/L of glucose concentration, 3.0 g/L of (NH4)2SO4 concentration, 10% inoculum size, and incubation time 96 h cultivated in a shaking flask at 30 °C were found to be the optimal conditions not only for cell growth but also for lipid synthesis. Under this condition, the cellular biomass and lipid content could reach 2.59 g/L and 8.88%, respectively. This work provides a new method for effective utilization of potato starch wastewater, which has particular social and economic benefits for yeast treatment technology.

Applying the method of physical fractionation, distribution characteristics of soil organic carbon and its composition in Suaeda salsa wetland in the Yellow River delta were studied. The results showed that the heavy fraction organic carbon was the dominant component of soil organic carbon in the studied region. There was a significantly positive relationship between the content of heavy fraction organic carbon, particulate organic carbon and total soil organic carbon. The ranges of soil light fraction organic carbon ratio and content were 0.008% - 0.15% and 0.10-0.40 g x kg(-1), respectively, and the range of particulate organic carbon ratio was 8.83% - 30.58%, indicating that the non-protection component of soil organic carbon was low and the carbon pool was relatively stable in Suaeda salsa wetland of the Yellow River delta.

Sludge-based activated carbon (SAC) was prepared from paper mill sewage sludge by physical activation with steam for wastewater treatment in this study. The effects of preparation variables, including carbonization temperature, carbonization time, activation temperature and activation time, on iodine number and yield were investigated through orthogonal experiments. The influences of washing by deionized water and acid on the characteristics and adsorption capacities of SAC for phosphate, methylene blue and reactive red 24 were also studied. The results indicated that the optimal preparation conditions were: carbonization temperature of 350 °C, carbonization time of 40 min, activation temperature of 800 °C and activation time of 20 min. The characteristics and adsorption capacities of SAC were obviously different before and after washing, especially by acid. The surface area was improved and adsorption capacities for dyes increased after washing, while adsorption capacity for phosphate decreased. The maximum adsorption capacities provided strong evidence of the potential of SAC as an alternative adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

The capacity of gated hosts for controlling a kinetic discrimination between stereoisomers is yet to be understood. To conduct corresponding studies, however, one needs to develop chiral, but modular and gated hosts. Accordingly, we used computational (RI-BP86/TZVP//RI-BP86/SV(P)) and experimental (NMR/CD/UV/Vis spectroscopy) methods to examine the transfer of chirality in gated baskets. We found that placing stereocenters of the same kind at the rim (R(1) =CH3, so-called bottom) and/or top amide positions (R(2) =sec-butyl) would direct the helical arrangement of the gates into a P or M propeller-like orientation. With the assistance of (1)H NMR spectroscopy, we quantified the intrinsic (thermodynamic) and constrictive (kinetic) binding affinities of (R)- and (S)-1,2-dibromopropane 5 toward baskets (S3b/P)-2, (S3t/M)-3, and (S3bt/P)-4. Interestingly, each basket has a low ( ?1.3 kcal mol(-1)), but comparable (de<10%) affinity for entrapping enantiomeric (R/S)-5. In terms of the kinetics, basket (S3b/P)-2, with a set of S stereocenters at the bottom and P arrangement of the gates, would capture (R)-5 at a faster rate (kin(R)/kin(S) =2.0±0.2). Basket (S3t/M)-3, with a set of S centers at the top and M arrangement of the gates, however, trapped (S)-5 at a faster rate (kin(R)/kin(S) =0.30±0.05). In light of these findings, basket (S3bt/P)-4, with a set of S stereocenters installed at both top and bottom sites along with a P disposition of the gates, was found to have a lower ability to differentiate between enantiomeric (R/S)-5 (kin(R)/kin(S) =0.8). Evidently, the two sets of stereocenters in this "hybrid" host acted concurrently, each with the opposite effect on the entrapment kinetics. Gated baskets are hereby established to be a prototype for quantifying the kinetic discrimination of enantiomers through gating and elucidating the electronic/steric effects on the process.

Neurofibromatosis type I (NF1) is a hereditary, autosomal dominant, neurocutaneous syndrome that is attributed to NF1 gene mutation. NF1 has been associated with scoliosis, macrocephaly, pseudoarthrosis, short stature, mental retardation, and malignancies. NF1-associated vasculopathy is an uncommon and easily-overlooked presentation. Examination of a Chinese family affected by NF1 combined with cerebral vessel stenosis and/or abnormality suggested a possible relationship between NF1 and vessel stenosis. To determine which NF1 gene mutation is associated with vascular lesions, particularly cerebral vessel stenosis, we examined one rare family with combined cerebral vessel lesions or maldevelopment. Vascular lesions were detected using transcranial Doppler sonography and digital subtraction angiography in family members. Next, denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography and sequencing were used to screen for NF1 gene mutations. The results revealed a nonsense mutation, c.541C>T, in the NF1 gene. This mutation truncated the NF1 protein by 2659 aminoacid residues at the C-terminus and co-segregated with all of the patients, but was not present in unaffected individuals in the family. Exceptionally, three novel mutations were identified in unaffected family members, but these did not affect the product of the NF1 gene. Thus the nonsense mutation, c.541C>T, located in the NF1 gene could constitute one genetic factor for cerebral vessel lesions.

The halophyte Suaeda salsa is the pioneer plant and is used for the degraded coastal wetland in Yellow River Delta. The water-salt stress is the most important factor for ecological restoration to degraded coastal wetland. To understand the adaptive mechanism of Suaeda salsa to water-salt stresses, the induced effects of different groundwater table depths (0, -10, -20, -30 cm) and salt stress (0%, 1%, 2%, 3%) on seedlings of Suaeda salsa plant were characterized by the growth parameters of plant height, branch number and biomass of different organs and biological indices of leaf chlorophyll content, the activities of SOD, CAT, the leaf content of MDA and protein. The results showed the significantly (p < 0.001) decreased height of the seedlings from -30 cm to 0 cm of groundwater table depth, together with the decreased the number of branches, the biomass of leaf, shoot and root. The highest total biomass of single plant was (1.09 +/- 0.15) g under the condition of -30 cm water table depth and 0% salt stress. However, the combination of 0 cm water table depth and 3% NaCl resulted in the biomass of (0.23 +/- 0.01) g, which was ca. 21% compared with the highest biomass. Similarly, the contents of leaf chlorophyll a, b and carotenoid were the highest under the condition of -30 cm water table depth and 0% salt stress and lowest under the condition of 0 cm water table depth combined with 3% NaCl. The activities of SOD, CAT were increased significantly (p < 0.05) depending on the increase of salt stress. At 0 cm water table depth, the activities of SOD were 55.00 U/mg with 0% NaCl and 151.58 U/mg with 3% NaCl, respectively. The activities of SOD were decreased when the water table depth increased. However, the activities of CAT achieved the highest level at -30 cm water table depth. At 0 and -10 cm water table depth, the MDA content increased with the increase of salt stress. The MDA content was 0.26 mmol/g at -30 cm water table depth with 3% NaCl, which was approx. 28%-40% of the MDA contents compared with that caused by other salt stresses. These results demonstrated that Suaeda salsa plant could change its morphological characteristics, biomass allocation, and the activities of antioxidative enzymes to adapt severe environment.

Intravascular photoacoustic (IVPA) imaging is a technique for visualizing atherosclerotic plaques with differential composition. Unlike conventional photoacoustic tomography scanning, where the scanning device rotates around the subject, the scanning aperture in IVPA imaging is enclosed within the imaged object. The display of the intravascular structure is typically obtained by converting detected photoacoustic waves into Cartesian coordinates, which can produce images with severe artifacts. Because the acquired data are highly limited, there does not exist a stable reconstruction algorithm for such imaging geometry. The purpose of this work was to apply image reconstruction concepts to explore the feasibility and efficacy of image reconstruction algorithms in IVPA imaging using traditional analytical formulas, such as a filtered back-projection (FBP) and the lambda-tomography method. Although the closed-form formulas are not exact for the IVPA system, a general picture of and interface information about objects are provided. To improve the quality of the reconstructed image, the iterative expectation maximization and penalized least-squares methods were adopted to minimize the difference between the measured signals and those generated by a reconstructed image. In this work, we considered both the ideal point detector and the acoustic transducers with finite- size aperture. The transducer effects including the spatial response of aperture and acoustoelectrical impulse responses were incorporated in the system matrix to reduce the aroused distortion in the IVPA reconstruction. Computer simulations and experiments were carried out to validate the methods. The applicability and the limitation of the reconstruction method were also discussed.

The monosodium glutamate (MSG) wastewater as a medium was treated by Lipomyces starkeyi to produce microbial lipid in the study. The effect of related factors (initial glucose concentration, inoculation concentration, initial culture pH, and cultivation time) on biomass, lipid production and lipid content was discussed, respectively. According to the experiments, the optimal fermentation conditions were determined: addition of 80g/L glucose, 10% inoculation concentration, initial pH about 5.0, incubation time 96h. Under this condition, the biomass production reached up to 4.61g/L, lipid production and lipid content was 1.14g/L and 24.73%, respectively. Simultaneously, protein and COD removal rate was 78.60% and 74.96%, respectively. The main composition of fatty acid in the resultant lipid was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, which showed: oleic acid (C18:1) 35.85%, palmitic acid (C16:0) 19.91%, palmitoleic acid (C16:1) 17.65%, and myristic acid (C14:0) 16.03%.

A cationic organic flocculant epichlorohydrin-dimethylamine (EPI-DMA) was employed for the treatment of acid and direct dye. The study aims at investigating the flocculation performance of EPI-DMA for the model dye, and corresponding floc aggregation properties, which were determined by jar test and photometric dispersion analysis, respectively. The interactions between cationic flocculant and anionic dye were investigated through spectra analysis. The results showed that EPI-DMA effectively decolorized the tested acid and direct dye. The viscosity and cationicity of EPI-DMA had different influence on the removal of different dye. Chemical interaction was observed between quaternary ammonium of EPI-DMA and sulfonic group of dye. The flocculation dynamic process showed that flocs with better aggregation and sedimentation properties were produced by EPI-DMA with higher viscosity and cationicity for acid dye. Contrarily, flocs with the best aggregation and sedimentation properties were produced by EPI-DMA with the lowest viscosity and cationicity for direct dye.

A novel composite of graphene sheets/Congo red-molecular imprinted polymers (GSCR-MIPs) was synthesized through free radical polymerization (FRP) and applied as a molecular recognition element to construct dopamine (DA) electrochemical sensor. The template molecules (DA) were firstly absorbed at the GSCR surface due to their excellent affinity, and subsequently, selective copolymerization of methacrylic acid (MAA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) was further achieved at the GSCR surface. Potential scanning was presented to extract DA molecules from the imprinted polymers film, and as a result, DA could be rapidly and completely removed by this way. With regard to the traditional MIPs, the GSCR-MIPs not only possessed a faster desorption and adsorption dynamics, but also exhibited a higher selectivity and binding capacity toward DA molecule. As a consequence, an electrochemical sensor for highly sensitive and selective detection of DA was successfully constructed as demonstration based on the synthesized GSCR-MIPs nanocomposites. Under experimental conditions, selective detection of DA in a linear concentration range of 1.0 × 10(-7)-8.3 × 10(-4)M was obtained, which revealed a lower limit of detection and wider linear response compared to some previously reported DA electrochemical MIPs sensors. The new DA electrochemical sensor based on GSCR-MIPs composites also exhibited excellent repeatability, which expressed as relative standard deviation (RSD) was about 2.50% for 30 repeated analyses of 20 ?M DA.

Based on the 23 sheets of remote sensing images from 1976 to 2009, in combining with the water and sediment data from Lijin station and the annual precipitation data of Yellow River Basin from 1976 to 2008, this paper quantitatively analyzed the features of water and sediment discharge from Yellow River, and the evolution process of Yellow River Delta and related driving mechanisms. In 1976-2008, the annual runoff and the annual sediment discharge into sea changed largely and frequently, but overall, presented a decreasing trend. Since the course of the Yellow River changed its direction to Qingshui channel in 1976, the Delta coastline and area were generally in a silting-up state. The evolution process of the Delta could be approximately divided into three stages, i.e., 1976-1985, 1986-1995, and 1996-2009, and the increasing rate of the Delta decreased with the stages. The coastline and area of the Delta were significantly exponentially correlated to the sediment accumulated at Lijin station, and the inter-annual variation of the precipitation of the Yellow River Basin had a strong correlation with that of the sediment at Lijin station, suggesting that the annual variation of the precipitation in Yellow River Basin was the main factor affecting the runoff and sediment discharge into sea.

A new type of chemically converted graphene sheets, cationic polyelectrolyte-functionalized ionic liquid decorated graphene sheets (PFIL-GS) composite, was synthesized and characterized by Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption, Fourier transform infrared, and Raman spectroscopy. It was found that the presence of PFIL enabled the formation of a very stable aqueous dispersion due to the electrostatic repulsion between PFIL modified graphene sheets. With respect to the excellent dispersibility of this material, we have fabricated a novel PFIL-GS/Prussian blue (PB) nanocomposite multilayer film via classic layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly. The assembly process was confirmed by UV-vis spectroscopy and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy, which showed linear responses to the numbers of the deposited PFIL-GS/PB bilayers. Moreover, the as-prepared composite films were used to detect hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) by electrochemical surface plasmon resonance (EC-SPR) spectroscopy. This real time EC-SPR technique can provide simultaneous monitoring of both optical SPR signal and electrochemical current responses upon injecting H(2)O(2) into the reaction cell. The experimental results revealed that both the electrochemical and SPR signal exhibited splendid linear relationship to the concentration of the injected H(2)O(2), and the detection limit could be up to 1 ?M.

Relationship between serum osteocalcin and glycaemic variability in Type 2 diabetes.

1. Recent reports have described the role of osteocalcin in glucose metabolism and glycaemic variability has been proven to be associated with an increased risk of diabetes complications. However, the relationship between osteocalcin and glycaemic variability remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between serum osteocalcin and glycaemic variability, as determined by a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). 2. Fifty-nine T2DM patients with glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels between 7.0% and 10.9% were recruited to the present study. Biochemical information and CGM parameters were collected at baseline and after 8 weeks of antihyperglycaemic therapy (either sulphonylurea, sulphonylurea + an ?-glucosidase inhibitor or insulin + metformin combination therapy). 3. Compared with baseline, serum osteocalcin increased significantly (P = 0.014), whereas parameters related to glucose variability, including the mean amplitude of glycaemic excursions (MAGE) and the standard deviation of blood glucose values, decreased significantly (P < 0.001) after the 8 week treatment period. At baseline, there was a positive correlation between serum osteocalcin levels and fasting C-peptide levels (P = 0.004) and homeostatic model assessment of ?-cell function (P = 0.048), but a negative correlation between serum osteocalcin levels and fasting plasma glucose (P = 0.023), HbA1c (P = 0.020), glycated albumin (P = 0.019) and 24 h mean blood glucose (P < 0.001). Multiple stepwise regression analysis indicated that baseline osteocalcin was the single parameter that best predicted the change in MAGE (? = -0.122; P = 0.039). 4. In conclusion, serum osteocalcin concentrations increased with improved glucose control. High initial osteocalcin levels were associated with subsequent improvements in glucose variability during glucose-lowering treatment.

A monolith molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) column was prepared from template (-)-norepinephrine, functional monomer (itaconic acid), and a cross-linker (either ethylene glycol dimethacrylate or divinylbenzene) in porogen N,N-dimethylformamide. Understanding the molecular recognition of a template using an MIP seems feasible. However, it is hard to explain the recognition properties of their analogues on an MIP. The separation mechanism was investigated with the addition of charged surfactants, native and derivatised ?-cyclodextrin (?-CD), achiral crown ether, etc. to determine the retention behaviour of the template analogues. The addition of organic modifiers and the adjustment of separation conditions were used to manipulate the selectivity. No chiral recognition was observed under most of the test conditions except the experiment with the charged ?-CD on the divinylbenzene-MIP column. The different experimental conditions led to differences in the mobilities of the analytes and resulted in remarkable enantiomeric separation of the template. We confirmed the presence of mixed-mode selectivity of the stationary phase based on hydrogen bonding, hydroelectric and hydrophobic interactions, and the electrophoretic mode.

Cup-shaped porphyrin 1a has four norbornane rings for encircling space and this type of host could be of interest in supramolecular and catalytic chemistry. We used (1)H NMR spectroscopy to investigate the acid-catalyzed (pTsOH in CHCl(3) and TFA in CH(3)CN) condensation of racemic, enantioenriched (80-85 % enantiomeric excess (ee)), and enantiopure (99 % ee) pyrromethanecarbinol 7 into 1a. We found that the oligomerization of racemic 7(rac) would give 1a-d in the ratio different from the statistical one, though a minuscule quantity of 1a (<5 %) formed. The oligomerization of enantioenriched 7 (80-85 % ee), however, led to the formation of greater amounts of 1a (31-47 %) along with other stereoisomers 1b-d. Importantly, pTsOH catalyzed the conversion of enantiopure 7 (99 % ee) into 1a (>95 % diastereomeric excess (de), 25 % overall yield) in CHCl(3) although prolonged reaction times or greater concentration of the catalytic acid gave rise to 1b-d at the expense of 1a. The metallation of 1 a with Zn(OAc)(2) led to the formation of Zn(II) -1 a and we used computational (DFT: RI-BP86/SV(P),TZVP) and experimental ((1)H NMR spectroscopy) methods to study the partitioning of smaller N-methylimidazole 13 (94 Å(3) ) and bigger 1,5-dicyclohexylimidazole 14 (268 Å(3)) between the inner and outer side of the host. We found that bigger 14 was mostly encapsulated (90 %) inside Zn(II) -1 a at 298.0 K, whereas smaller 13 would equally partition between the two sides of the host. Furthermore, the out/in equilibrium was, in the case of 14-Zn(II) -1a, favored by entropy (T?S°(out/in) =3.5±0.1 kcal mol(-1)) indicating that perhaps differential solvation of the coordinated ligand assisted the encapsulation.

The pollution status and total concentration of soil heavy metals were analyzed around tailing reservoir of Baotou and iron mining of Bayan Obo located in Inner Mongolia grassland ecosystem. Aim of the study is to control soil heavy metal pollution of grassland mining area and provide the basic information. The results indicated that the soils from different directions of the tailing reservoir were contaminated by Pb, Cu, Zn and Mn. According to the single factor pollution index, the pollution degree was Mn > Zn > Pb > Cu. According to Nemerow integrated pollution index, the indexes of the northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest of the tailing reservoir, were 2.43, 10.2, 1.88, 1.64. Soils from the southeast had the most serious heavy metal contamination because of the dominant wind of northwest. Within 50 m from the edge of tailing reservoir, heavy metal contamination was most serious except Cu. With regard to Bayan Obo iron mining, the single factor pollution index indicated that the soils from the six surveyed regions were contaminated by Pb, Cu, Zn and Mn. The integrated pollution index indicated that the indexes of the six regions, such as the mining area, the dump, outside the dump, outside the urban area, east region of the railway, and west region of the railway, were 14.3, 4.30, 2.69, 3.41, 2.88, and 2.20, respectively. The soil pollution degree of the mining area was the highest. Additionally, the transport of ore resulted in soil heavy metal pollution along railway. In general, soils of the two studied areas had the similar pollution characteristic, and the elements of heavy metal contamination were corresponding with the concentrations of tailings. The health and stabilization of grassland ecosystem are being threatened by soil heavy metals.

In some cases the language used in the PubMed abstracts makes matching that content to a JoVE video difficult. In other cases, there happens not to be any content in our video library that is relevant to the topic of a given abstract. In these cases, our algorithms are trying their best to display videos with relevant content, which can sometimes result in matched videos with only a slight relation.
