Elevation of urinary adipsin in preeclampsia: correlation with urine protein concentration and the potential use for a rapid diagnostic test.

Early diagnosis and treatment of preeclampsia are essential for prevention of seizure development and fetus maturation. Although various methods have been developed for predicting or monitoring the onset of preeclampsia, a simple assay that can be used as a home or point of care test remains unavailable. We attempted to find a urinary protein that could be used as a biomarker for developing such a test. Urinary samples were collected from 124 preeclampsia and 135 healthy pregnant women for screening using a protein array technology and quantification by ELISA. A urinary protein, adipsin, was found significantly increased, and the adipsin creatinine ratio was closely correlated with the urinary 24-hour protein in patients with preeclampsia. When combined with the increased diastolic blood pressure (?90 mm Hg), the sensitivity was 90.3% and the specificity reached 100.0% for preeclampsia diagnosis. We then developed a laminar flow immunoassay for rapid diagnosis, and the sensitivity and specificity were 89.04% and 100%, respectively, when combined with increased diastolic blood pressure. Because of the easiness of sample collection, assay conduction, and result interpretation, this urine test can be potentially used as a home test for monitoring preeclampsia onset for high-risk pregnant women and as a rapid test for a preliminary diagnosis for emergency patients at hospitals.

Preeclampsia, characterized by hypertension and proteinuria, is a multifactorial disease associated with shallow invasion of trophoblast cells and inadequate spiral artery remodeling. Trophoblast and tumor cells have similar invasion mechanism. Prostasin is closely related to tumor development, invasion and metastasis and influences blood pressure through activating epithelial sodium channel. The effect of prostasin on the pathogenesis of preeclampsia remains unclear. This study investigated the association of prostasin gene at rs12597511 with severe preeclampsia.

Here we report that the performance, reversibility and stability of a solid oxide iron-air redox battery can be significantly improved by nanostructuring energy storage materials from a carbothermic reaction.

We demonstrate that the highly active but unstable nanostructured intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cell cathode, La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-? (LSCo), can retain its high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity with exceptional stability for 4000 h at 700 °C by overcoating its surfaces with a conformal layer of nanoscale ZrO2 films through atomic layer deposition (ALD). The benefits from the presence of the nanoscale ALD-ZrO2 overcoats are remarkable: a factor of 19 and 18 reduction in polarization area-specific resistance and degradation rate over the pristine sample, respectively. The unique multifunctionality of the ALD-derived nanoscaled ZrO2 overcoats, that is, possessing porosity for O2 access to LSCo, conducting both electrons and oxide-ions, confining thermal growth of LSCo nanoparticles, and suppressing surface Sr-segregation is deemed the key enabler for the observed stable and active nanostructured cathode.

Preeclampsia, a multisystem disorder unique to pregnancy, is a major cause of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity. Inadequate trophoblast invasion and vascular dysfunction are believed to be involved in preeclampsia. Axl, which interacts with its ligand Gas6, known to regulate cell migration, adhesion, and vascular angiogenesis or homeostasis and vascular network formation, may be implicated in preeclampsia, as preeclampsia is a specific vascular disease. sAxl, a soluble form of Axl, is bound to Gas6 in plasma, which inhibits the activation of the Axl-Gas6 pathway. The aim of this study was to determine the changes and significance of plasma concentrations of sAxl in severe preeclampsia, as well as its correlation with the clinical parameters of severe preeclampsia.

Identification of the existence of pyrocarbonate ion C2O5(2-) in molten carbonates exposed to a CO2 atmosphere provides key support for a newly established bi-ionic transport model that explains the mechanisms of high CO2 permeation flux observed in mixed oxide-ion and carbonate-ion conducting (MOCC) membranes containing highly interconnected three dimensional ionic channels. Here we report the first Raman spectroscopic evidence of C2O5(2-) as an active species involved in the CO2-transport process of MOCC membranes exposed to a CO2 atmosphere. The two new broad peaks centered at 1317 cm(-1) and 1582 cm(-1) are identified as the characteristic frequencies of the C2O5(2-) species. The measured characteristic Raman frequencies of C2O5(2-) are in excellent agreement with the DFT-model consisting of six overlapping individual theoretical bands calculated from Li2C2O5 and Na2C2O5.

An all solid-state tungsten-air battery is reported here, which is based on a new metal-air chemistry, featuring decoupled design of electrodes and energy storage. Benefited from higher specific density and better redox kinetics of tungsten, the new tungsten-air battery exhibits roughly higher energy density (W h L(-1)) than the previously reported iron-air battery.

The microstructure and morphology of solid-oxide fuel-cell electrodes are very complex but important because they strongly affect the electrical performance of the cell. In this work the high-resolution X-ray nanotomography technique is applied to reconstruct the three-dimensional microstructure of a (La(0.8)Sr(0.2))(0.95)MnO(3) yttria-stabilized zirconia composite cathode. Some key microstructural parameters, such as the porosity, representative elementary volume, connected pore volume and pore phase tortuosity, were obtained based on the three-dimensional reconstruction volume data with a spatial resolution of sub-60?nm. These parameters bear intimate correlation with the efficiency of the electrochemical conversion process, and provide valuable information for optimizing the manufacturing processes and improving the devices reliability.

Osteoprotegerin (OPG), a key regulatory factor in bone metabolism, was documented also a potential pro-angiogenic factor, which acts an important role in protecting vascular endothelial cells. Since preeclampsia has gradually been employed to be vascular diseases, we speculated that OPG might be associated with preeclampsia. The study was to evaluate the level of OPG protein and mRNA in placenta, and investigate the relationship between OPG and the pathogenesis of preeclampsia.
