Habituation: Studying Infants Before They Can Talk

Habituation helps scientists measure infant attention before babies can talk. Researchers study infants because they have had very few life experiences, so they can offer clear clues about human thinking and learning. Studying them is challenging because young infants cannot reliably speak, understand speech, or even move and control their own bodies.

Babies can reliably do only a few things, such as eating, sleeping, and looking around. Because of these limits, researchers use clever methods to explore infant thought. One of the most useful methods is based on habituation, a drop in attention that happens when something stays the same over time.

Infants, like adults, pay more attention to new and interesting things. If they stay in the same environment, they become used to it and pay less attention. That reduced attention is called habituation. When something new appears, infants often look again. This renewed attention is called dishabituation.

Scientists use habituation and dishabituation as tools in experiments with young infants. They first show a stimulus until the infant is habituated. Then they present a different stimulus to see whether the infant notices the change. By choosing the stimuli carefully, researchers can learn how infants think and learn. This experiment shows how habituation can be used to study infant shape discrimination.
