The Rouge Test: Searching for a Sense of Self

Self-recognition helps researchers study how children begin to understand themselves and other people. It is one of the first steps toward self-awareness and a mature theory of mind, which is the ability to understand that other people can think and feel differently from you.

Theory of mind matters in everyday life. People use it when they give compliments, work in groups, ask for favors, and tell white lies. Young children do not develop this skill all at once. They first need a clear sense that they are separate from other people and have their own desires and knowledge.

Studying this process can be difficult because children often understand more than they can explain with words.
