Reactions of Alkenes

Bromohydrin Addition in Alkene Reactions

Description

Bromohydrin addition shows how an alkene can react with bromine in water to form a halohydrin. In this reaction, the product has a halogen and a hydroxyl group on neighboring carbons. When the halogen is bromine, the product is called a bromohydrin. When the halogen is chlorine, it is called a chlorohydrin.

Transcript

Alkenes, such as propene, react with a halogen in the presence of water to yield a halohydrin, a compound having a halogen and a hydroxyl group on adjacent carbons.

The first step in the mechanism involves the electrophilic addition of bromine across the double bond giving a bromonium ion.

Water, present in excess, acts as a nucleo...
