How Proteins Cross the Nuclear Envelope

Description

Nuclear protein sorting controls how proteins, RNA, and ribosomes move between the nucleus and the cytosol. Histones, polymerases, and gene regulatory proteins are carried into the nucleus. RNA and ribosomes are exported to the cytosol. This selective transport helps regulate gene expression inside the cell.

Nuclear protein sorting occurs through nuclear pore complexes or NPCs embedded in the nuclear membrane.

Each NPC is a tight aqueous pore that allows the selective transport of folded peptides by dilating the channel diameter to accommodate large molecules as they squeeze through it.
