العديد من البروتينات تكون منظّمة من خلال الجزيئات المتبطة تساهميا 00:00:05.650 00:00:09.070 بما في ذلك المجموعات الوظيفية مثل شقوق الميثيل أو الأسيتيل والبروتينات الصغيرة مثل الكيكويتين الروابط التساهمية تحدث على أحماض أمينية محددة في سلسلة عديدة البيبتيدات. على سبيل المثال،مجموعات الفوسفات تكون مرتبطة تساهميا بالسيرين الثيريونين أو التيروزين. مجموعات الميثيل والأسيتيل مرتبطة بالليسين.و اليوبيكويتين يرتبط بالجزيئات المنفردة اللايزين سيستين و سيرين, أو ثيريونين. إنزيم أو زوج من الإنزيمات تحفز تعديلات ما بعد الترجمة بشكل عكسي أسيتيل ترانسزفيراز يمكن ان ينقل الاستيل للبرولين بينما دى اسيتايلاز يمكنه أن يقوم بإزالة المجوعة لاحقا. هذه التعديلات قادرة على القيام بتغيير وظيفة البروتين أو موقعه في الخلية.على سبيل المثال،إضافة الاستيل لبروتينات الهيستون ينظم التعبير الجيني من خلال فتح بُنية دى إن إيه لتنشيط نسخ الجينات. إضافة الميثايل للهيستوون من ناحية أخرى،معروفة بأنها تحد من النسخ من خلال إحكام بنية الدى ان ايه. و مثال آخر هو بى 35 إيه البروتين المتعدد الأساسى المثبط للورم يمر بعدة تعديلات تساهمية استجابة للإجهاد.التعرض إلى العوامل الضارة بالحمض النووي،مثل الأشعة فوق البنفسجية وأشعة جاما يمكن أن يؤدي إلى فسفرة البروتين. الفسفرة تحسن الأستقرار وتنشط 53 بى فتتسبب في ربطه بالحمض النووي الذى حدث له تلف بالإشعاع ويمنع الخلايا التى بها دى إن إيه متحور من الإنقسام إلى الغير موجه. بالإضافة إلى الفسفرة،هناك أنواع مختلفة من التعديلات التي تحدث على جزىء بروتين واحد مثل 53 بى يسمح له بالتحكم بكل دقة فى وظائفه،مثل توقف دورة الخلية, و إصلاح دى إن أيه 00:01:58.540 00:02:02.340 الموت المبرمج للخلية.

Protein regulation by covalent bonds helps control how cells respond to changing conditions. A covalent bond is a strong chemical link, and in this context it can change how a protein behaves.

Some regulators work by attaching a chemical group directly to a protein. This covalent change can alter the protein's activity, its location in the cell, or how long it stays active. Because the change is built into the protein itself, it can have a strong effect on cell function.
