Radical geometry depends on the electronic structure around the radical center. An unpaired electron, like a lone pair, affects the shape of the molecule. For a trivalent radical, the structure falls between the geometries of carbocations and carbanions.

A carbocation with sp2 hybridization is trigonal planar. A carbanion with sp3 hybridization is trigonal pyramidal. The difference comes from the number of nonbonding electrons. The carbocation has none, while the carbanion has two. A carbon radical has one nonbonding electron in a p orbital, so its geometry lies between these two limits.

Experimental results show that trivalent carbon-centered radicals are often superficially pyramidal but nearly planar. Oxygenated radicals such as •CH2OH and •CMe2OH show this pattern. Some carbon-centered radicals, such as •CF3, are closer in shape to sp3-hybridized carbanions. In contrast, the methyl radical is fully trigonal planar, like an sp2-hybridized carbocation.

Radical geometry can also relate to chirality. A carbanion may be chiral because it resists pyramidal inversion. Radicals can be achiral, since carbon-centered radicals with alkyl substituents that look pyramidal can undergo pyramidal inversion and become nearly planar.
