NMR pulse angles and signal collection explain how radiofrequency energy starts a measurement. A pulse is a short burst of radio waves spread across a range of frequencies. It excites the nuclei in the sample at the same time.

When a radiofrequency pulse is applied along the x-axis, nuclei absorb energy that matches their Larmor frequencies and reach resonance. The net magnetization vector moves away from the z-axis and toward the transverse plane. This rotation angle is called the flip angle. It depends on how long the pulse lasts and how strong it is.

A 90° pulse moves the net magnetization onto the x-y plane. A 180° pulse moves it to the -z direction. Pulses are then arranged in sequences to reveal more detail about the sample being studied.

A simple pulse sequence starts with an excitation pulse from the transmitter. It is followed by an acquisition time, when the free induction decay signals are collected and digitized by the computer console. The nuclei then relax and return toward equilibrium before the next pulse is applied during the relaxation delay.
