المجموعات الوظيفية مجموعات من الذرات مترابطة تساهميًا،تؤثر في خواصّجزيء معين. غالبًا ما تتشابه الجزيئات التي تحتوي على نفس المجموعات الوظيفية،في خواصّها وتمرّبتفاعلات متشابهة. تتيح تسمية المجموعات الوظيفية،تعريفًا سريعًا للذرات في جزيء معين،وهذا مفيد في الكيمياء العضوية والكيمياء الحيوية.تُشكل الهيدروكربونات الأساس للجزيئات العضوية وتحتوي على أعداد متفاوتة من ذرات الكربون والهيدروجين. من هذه الهيدروكربونات الألكانات،والألكينات،والألكاينات. ترتبط ذرات الكربون ببعضها البعض في الألكانات بروابط أحادية،بينما تحتوي الألكينات والألكاينات على روابط ثنائية وثلاثية على التوالي.تستطيع الهيدروكربونات تشكيل حلقات مغلقة. إذا كانت الحلقة تحتوي على روابط أحادية،تُسمى ألكان حلَقي. وإذا كانت ذرات الكربون مرتبطة بعضها ببعض بواسطة روابط أحادية وثنائية بالتناوب،تُسمى حلقة عطرية أو مجموعة أريل.من أبسط المجموعات،التي لا تحتوي على الكربون مجموعة الهيدروكسيل التي تحتوي على ذرة أكسجين وذرة هيدروجين. وهي من المكونات المهمة للعديد من المركبات،مثل الميثانول،والماء،والكربوهيدرات. من الفئات الأخرى للمجموعات الوظيفية،فئات الكربونيل،التي تحتوي على ذرة كربون وذرة أكسجين مرتبطتان برابطة ثنائية.من بين المجموعات التي تحتوي على الكربونيل،المجموعات الوظيفية مثل الألدهيدات،الكيتونات،الإسترات،والكربوكسيلات. تحتوي الألدهيدات على هيدروجين وعلى مجموعة متغيّرة أو R مرتبطة بكاربونيل،بينما تحتوي الكيتونات على مجموعتين متغيّرتين. مجموعة R غالبًا ما تمثل الهيدروكربونات لكنها قد تكون مجموعات أخرى أو ذرات أخرى.الألدهيدات والكيتونات مجموعتين وظيفيتين رئيسيتين في الكربوهيدرات. تتكوّن الإسترات من مجموعة كربونيل،تحيط بها مجموعة R وذرة أكسجين،بينما الأحماض الكربوكسيلية أو المجموعات الكربوكسيلية،تحيط بها مجموعة R وذرة كحول. تحتوي الليبيدات على إسترات،وتحتوي الأحماض الأمينية على أحماض كربوكسيلية.كما تحتوي الأحماض الأمينية على مجموعة وظيفية أخرى،تُسمى أمين أو مجموعة أمينية. يتكون الأمين من نيتروجين مع زوج وحيد متصلين بمزيج من الهيدروجين ومجموعات R.الأحماض الأمينية هي لبنات بناء البروتينات. مجموعة الفوسفات هي ذرة فوسفات مرتبطة بأربع ذرات أكسجين،وتوجد عادة في الحمض النووي الصبغي DNA للكائنات الحية.كما يمكنها أن ترتبط بالبروتينات لتغيير وظيفتها.

المجموعات الوظيفية
