البروتينات هي بوليمرات أحماض أمينية،متصلة ببعضها البعض بواسطة روابط ببتيدية. معظم البروتينات،تنطوي مكونة بنية محددة ثلاثية الأبعاد،كي تؤدي وظيفتها. تُصنف البروتينات من حيث البنية في أربع فئات:أولية،وثانوية،وثالثية،ورابعية.التسلسل الخطي للأحماض الأمينية في البروتين هو بنيته الأولية. تُقرأ هذه التسلسلات حسب ترتيب تشكيل البوليمر،من الطرف-N،الذي لا تشارك فيه المجموعة الأمينية،إلى الطرف-C،الذي لا تشارك فيه المجموعة الكربوكسيلية. تتشكل البنيات الثانوية بواسطة الترابط الهيدروجيني بين الأكسجين،من مجموعة الكربونيل في أحد الأحماض الأمينية،وبين الهيدروجين،من المجموعة الأمينية في حمض آخر.من البنيات الثانوية الشائعة صفائح ألفا-حلزوني،وبيتا-مطوي. هذه البنيات الترابطية وغيرها مثل انعطافات بيتا،تتداخل لتشكل البنية ثلاثية الأبعاد للبروتين،المعروفة باسم البنية الثالثية. يحدث تكوين البنية الثالثية،نتيجة التفاعلات الداخلية بين مجموعات-R من الأحماض الأمينية.تستطيع مجموعات R ذات الشحنات المتضادّة،أن تشكل روابط أيونية،ويستطيع الكبريت في ذرتي سيستين،أن يشكل جسر ثنائي الكبريت التساهمي. ومن المساهِمات الأخرى،التفاعلات الكارهة للماء بين طرف السلاسل الكاره للماء،والروابط الهيدروجينية في طرف السلاسل القطبي. كما تُشكل بعض البروتينات بنيات رابعية،وهي تجمعات لسلسلتين أو أكثر متعددة الببتيد.على سبيل المثال،الهيموغلوبين هو بروتين،يتألف من أربع وحدات فرعية،اثنتان منهما ألفا واثنتان بيتا. يستطيع العلماء استخدام بنية بروتين معين،للتنبؤ بوظيفته وموقعه في الخلية. تحتوي البروتينات في سيتوبلازم الخلية على أحماض أمينية محبة للماء على أسطحها،و التي تتفاعل مع الماء في السيتوبلازم،كما تحتوي على مراكز كارهة للماء.وعلى العكس،البروتينات الموجودة في الأغشية،غالبًا ما تحتوي على أحماض أمينية كارهة للماء على السطح،تتفاعل مع الجلسيروفوسفوليبيدات التي في الغشاء،كما تحتوي على مراكز محبة للماء.

Proteins are essential molecules in living things, and their shape affects how they work. Protein structure is described at several levels, including primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary structure. These levels help explain how a protein is built and how its final form supports its job.

Primary structure is the sequence of amino acids in a protein. Secondary structure forms when parts of the chain fold into regular patterns. Tertiary structure is the overall three-dimensional shape of one protein chain. Quaternary structure appears when more than one protein chain joins together to make a working protein.

The video also shows how protein structure can be represented in different ways. A simple line drawing can show the amino acid sequence. Other models can show folding and the full 3D shape. These visual forms help students compare levels of structure and see why protein shape matters.
