pulse voltage methods for electrochemistry

Pulse voltage methods in electrochemistry use small, timed changes in voltage to measure current. Differential-pulse voltammetry, or DPV, adds short potential pulses to a linear sweep across an electrochemical cell. These pulses are usually in the millivolt range and appear at regular intervals. Each pulse lasts only a few milliseconds.

DPV works by creating faradaic current at the electrode surface. Faradaic current comes from redox reactions, where electrons move between the electrode and analyte species in solution. The current is measured before and after each pulse. The difference between those two values gives the differential current, which is plotted against the applied potential.

The size of the differential current is proportional to the concentration of the electroactive species in the solution. DPV also offers excellent resolution. That makes it easier to tell multiple species apart. It is also relatively inert to capacitive currents, which can hide signals in other voltammetry methods.

Square wave voltammetry uses a different pulse pattern. It applies a square wave together with a staircase potential at a stationary electrode. During the cathodic pulses, the analyte is reduced at the electrode surface. During the anodic pulses, the reduced analyte is reoxidized.

The square wave polarogram shows the current difference between two points in the square wave voltammogram. These points are usually taken at the peaks of the anodic and cathodic currents. The difference between those peaks is proportional to the concentration of the analyte.
