diode forward bias: i-v curve and models

Diode forward bias is analyzed with the current-voltage, or I-V, curve and two common circuit models. These models help describe how a diode behaves when current flows in the forward direction. They are useful for electronic circuit design and analysis.

The exponential diode model is used when the source voltage rises above 0.5 volts. At that point, the diode current increases exponentially above the saturation current. The I-V curve shows this nonlinear response as the forward voltage increases.

Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law, or KVL, is used to write an equation for the diode circuit. This equation links the source voltage, the diode voltage drop, and the diode current. The operating point, called point Q, is found where the load line meets the I-V curve. That point shows the diode’s current and voltage in the circuit.

The constant-voltage-drop model gives a simpler way to analyze a forward-biased diode. It assumes a steady voltage drop across the diode, usually 0.7 volts for a silicon diode. This lets students find the diode current quickly with KVL. The exponential model gives more detailed results, while the constant-voltage-drop model is easier to use for basic analysis and classroom work.
