Portland cement comes in several grades with different properties and uses. Its chemical composition and hydration behavior help determine how it performs in concrete. These differences matter in general construction, fast repairs, large structures, and places where sulfate exposure is a concern.

Type I, or Ordinary Portland Cement, is the common choice for general construction. It is used when special properties are not required. This type has moderate sulfate resistance and moderate heat of hydration, which is the heat released as cement reacts with water.

Type II, also called Modified Cement, offers moderate resistance to sulfate attack. It also develops heat at a lower rate than Type I. That makes it suitable for structures built in sulfate-bearing soils.

Type III, or Rapid-hardening Cement, gains strength faster than Type I. It does this because it is finer and has more tricalcium silicate. It is useful for quick construction and cold-weather work, but its high heat of hydration limits its use in massive structures.

Type IV, or Low-heat Cement, is used in massive concrete structures such as dams. It is chosen because it produces less heat during hydration. Lower heat helps reduce the risk of thermal cracking in large concrete sections.

Type V, or Sulfate-resisting Cement, is made for environments with high sulfate exposure. It contains less tricalcium aluminate, which reduces the chemical reaction with sulfates. This gives it strong resistance to sulfate attack.
