Errors in Global Positioning System

GPS accuracy can change because of signal delays, reflections, and device problems. These errors come from the atmosphere, nearby surfaces, satellites, and the receiver itself. To get reliable positioning, GPS systems must reduce these effects as much as possible.

As GPS signals pass through the ionosphere and troposphere, they slow down. The ionosphere contains charged particles and is strongly affected by solar activity. The troposphere contains water vapor, which also changes how the signal travels. Engineers use models and algorithms to predict and correct these delays, but the atmosphere still remains a difficult source of error.

Multipath error happens when a GPS signal bounces off nearby objects before it reaches the receiver. Buildings, water, and dense foliage can all create these reflected paths. The receiver then gets more than one signal path, which causes timing differences. This problem is common in cities and other places with many obstructions.

Some errors also come from the satellites and the receiver. Satellite clocks can drift because of gravitational forces and solar radiation. Small mistakes in orbit data, called ephemeris, can place a satellite in the wrong position on paper. On the receiver side, internal noise, hardware limits, poor antenna alignment, and mistakes in measuring receiver height can add more inaccuracy.

Differential GPS, or DGPS, helps correct many of these problems by using reference stations. Multi-frequency receivers also improve accuracy because they use more than one signal band. These systems can reduce ionospheric effects better than single-frequency receivers. Together with advanced filtering, they make GPS more reliable in both urban and remote settings.
