Global Positioning System (GPS) helps map field locations for surveying, navigation, and infrastructure work. Satellite signals let a GPS receiver find an object’s position very quickly, often in less than a second. This speed makes GPS a practical tool for fieldwork.

Modern GPS receivers are small, light, and energy efficient. They are built for portable use in real field conditions. GPS signals use the microwave spectrum, so they can work in rain and fog. Even so, ionospheric disturbances can affect them, and dense cloud cover can weaken the signal.

For the best accuracy, a GPS receiver needs a clear view of the sky. Antennas should be placed so they can receive satellite signals at vertical angles above 15–20 degrees. Pocket compasses and clinometers help field workers choose good observation sites. These tools also help avoid interference from buildings and trees.

GPS has improved surveying by providing control points that save time and reduce labor. It works well in long open traverses where signals stay uninterrupted. In urban areas and dense forests, portable towers and raised antennas can help get around obstructions and improve data collection.

GPS also has important limits. Its signals do not pass through solid materials such as walls, dense city structures, or bodies of water. That makes it less useful underwater and underground. In those cases, other methods such as sonar for underwater surveys or inertial navigation for underground work may be needed.
