GPS surveying uses different methods to balance accuracy, speed, and field conditions. The main approaches are static GPS, kinematic GPS, and real-time kinematic (RTK) surveying. Each one collects position data in a different way, so each fits a different kind of surveying and mapping job.

Static GPS uses two receivers. One stays at a known reference point, and the other is placed at the target point. It measures several satellite ranges over a long time, which can give centimeter-level accuracy for relative positioning, even across long distances. This method is best for control surveys that need very high precision. It usually takes 30 minutes to more than an hour, depending on satellite geometry and atmospheric conditions. Its elevation accuracy may be less reliable, but it is still a strong choice for large-scale, high-precision work.

Kinematic GPS works while the receiver is moving. That makes it useful for vehicle tracking, topographic mapping, and aerial surveys. It can collect data quickly, and its accuracy can be similar to static GPS when the receiver stops briefly at each point. The method needs continuous visibility of at least four satellites, and five or more is better. Because of that, it works poorly in dense forests or crowded city areas, but it performs well in open spaces where tracking must continue without interruption.

RTK surveying gives centimeter-level accuracy in real time. It uses a base station and a rover receiver, which send radio signals to provide differential corrections. RTK supports continuous data collection and point-by-point measurements, often called stop-and-go surveying. It is widely used in mapping, engineering layout, and construction. Its horizontal accuracy is very strong, but vertical accuracy may be less dependable. Results also depend on equipment quality and how close the base station is to the rover.
