GIS can help engineers compare road route options before a road is built. Geographic Information Systems use geospatial data, which is location-based information, to study the land and plan a safe and practical route.

The route study starts with data on land cover, geomorphology, drainage patterns, slope, and contour details. This information is often gathered from satellite imagery and GIS tools. Together, these layers show how the terrain changes across the project area.

After the data is collected, several possible routes are analyzed. In this example, three routes were compared. Each route was checked for length, feasibility, and cost.

The shortest route was not chosen because it required a bridge to cross a water body. That bridge pushed the construction cost above the available budget. The other two routes were longer, but one of them was selected because it was the most viable and stayed within budget.

The chosen route was also reviewed for traffic effects. Its social, economic, and environmental impacts were found to be within acceptable limits. This kind of GIS planning helps create a road network that is efficient, cost conscious, and less disruptive to the environment.
