A sequence is a function defined on the set of natural numbers, producing a list of values indexed by n.If these values approach a single real number as n increases, the sequence converges.This real number is called the limit of the sequence.Graphically, this means the values of the sequence get closer to a horizontal line as n increases.For example, the sequence one over n converges to zero as n approaches infinity.Two useful tools for proving convergence are boundedness and monotonicity.A bounded sequence remains within fixed upper and lower values, while a monotonic sequence always increases or decreases.Together, these lead to the Monotonic Sequence Theorem, which states that if a sequence is both bounded and monotonic, it must converge.Consider a cooling cup of coffee. Its temperature, measured each minute, forms a decreasing, or monotonic sequence. A sequence is an ordered list of numbers created one term at a time. In math analysis, students often ask whether the terms get closer and closer to a single real number as the index grows. When that happens, the sequence converges, and the number it approaches is called the limit.

A graph can make this idea easier to see. As the sequence continues, its plotted points move toward a horizontal line. A simple example is the sequence of reciprocals of the natural numbers. Its terms get smaller as the index increases and approach zero, even though they may never equal zero exactly.

Two key ideas help describe sequences that settle down in this way. A bounded sequence stays between fixed upper and lower limits, so it cannot grow without restriction. A monotonic sequence moves in only one direction. It either always increases or always decreases.

These ideas come together in the Monotonic Sequence Theorem. The theorem says that every bounded, monotonic sequence must converge. A useful real-world example is the cooling of a cup of coffee. If the temperature is measured every minute, the values form a decreasing sequence.

That coffee temperature sequence is also bounded below. It cannot keep falling forever, because it cannot go below the room temperature around it. Since the sequence is monotonic and bounded below, the theorem says it must converge. Its limit is the stable temperature of the room.
