Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy helps organic chemists study molecules and check reaction results. It can show molecular structure, sample content, and sample purity. Because NMR is non-destructive, it is useful when the sample needs to be recovered after analysis.

One of the most common methods is proton, or 1H, NMR. Protons in a molecule respond differently depending on their chemical environment. That difference makes it possible to infer the structure of the molecule from the spectrum.

NMR can also be used to follow a reaction as it proceeds. Scientists compare the spectrum of the starting material with the spectrum of the final product to see whether the reaction is complete. This makes NMR a practical tool for everyday organic chemistry work.

The example shown is the synthesis of an E-chalcone from an aldehyde and a ketone. The procedure includes preparing an NMR sample, using 1H NMR to monitor the reaction, and identifying the product formed. In this case, the product is (2E)-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-(4-methylphenyl)-2-propen-1-one.
