Cancer stem cells and adult stem cells have several common and distinctive features.
Adult stem cells are found in most body tissues and organs. They have limited self-renewal capacity.
Cancer&#160; stem cells are confined to tumors and have indefinite self-renewal capability.
Adult stem cells are generally tissue-specific, so they multiply to develop the type of tissue from which they originate. Adult stem cells can stay dormant for years until they are activated to repair or grow new tissue.
On the contrary, cancer stem cells multiply to form cancer cells with potential to terminally differentiate and a few cancer stem cells.
These cancer stem cells can actively proliferate, are resistant to chemotherapy, and can bluff the body&#8217;s immune system to metastasize to various remote sites.
Unlike the adult stem cells, most cancer stem cells show abnormal karyotypes.
Since adult stem cells live longer than other normal cells, there is a probability that they might acquire several genetic mutations to become cancerous. But cancer stem cells cannot be transformed back into normal stem cells.

A stem cell is an unspecialized cell that can divide without limit as needed and can, under specific conditions, differentiate into specialized cells.
Adult stem cells
Adult stem cells are tissue-specific; hence, they divide to develop the tissue from which they originate. One type of adult stem cell is the epithelial stem cell, which gives rise to the keratinocytes in the multiple layers of epithelial cells in the epidermis of the skin. Adult bone marrow has three distinct types of stem cells: hematopoietic stem cells, which give rise to red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets; endothelial stem cells, which give rise to the endothelial cell types that line blood and lymph vessels; and mesenchymal stem cells, which give rise to the different types of muscle cells.
Cancer Stem cells
Cancer stem cells are a minor subpopulation of cells present in tumors and have the potential to renew and differentiate. For this reason, they are known to share similar characteristics with normal stem cells. In 1997, Bonnet and Dick were the first to find evidence of cancer stem cells by isolating a subpopulation of cells that expressed the surface marker CD34. It was found that the CD34 subpopulation had the potential to develop tumors in severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice that were histologically similar to the donor.
While&#160;adult stem cells are generally tissue-specific, cancer stem cells multiply to produce cancer cells with the potential to terminally differentiate and a few cancer stem cells. Adult stem cells have limited self-renewal capacity, while cancer stem cells have indefinite self-renewal capability.&#160; Adult stem cells are quiescent most of the time and have normal karyotypes. But the cancer stem cells are mitotically less active than cancer cells and often contain abnormal karyotypes.

Adult stem cells and cancer stem cells share the ability to renew and make specialized cells, but they behave differently in the body. Adult stem cells are unspecialized cells that can divide as needed and, under the right conditions, become specialized cells. Cancer stem cells are a small group of cells inside tumors that also renew and differentiate.

Adult stem cells are tissue-specific, which means they help build the tissue where they are found. For example, epithelial stem cells give rise to keratinocytes in the layered epidermis of the skin. Adult bone marrow also contains three stem cell types: hematopoietic stem cells, which produce red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets; endothelial stem cells, which form the cells lining blood and lymph vessels; and mesenchymal stem cells, which give rise to different muscle cells.

Cancer stem cells act differently from normal adult stem cells. They can produce cancer cells and still leave behind a few cancer stem cells. They also have indefinite self-renewal, while adult stem cells have limited self-renewal capacity. Adult stem cells are usually quiescent, or inactive, most of the time and have normal karyotypes, meaning normal chromosome sets.

Cancer stem cells were first supported by evidence in 1997 when Bonnet and Dick isolated a subpopulation of cells that expressed the CD34 surface marker. That CD34 group was able to form tumors in severe combined immunodeficiency, or SCID, mice, and the tumors were histologically similar to the donor tumor. Cancer stem cells are mitotically less active than cancer cells and often have abnormal karyotypes.
