动能本身也以不同形式存在,即机械能、电能、热能和辐射能。

虽然机械能是由物体的机械运动产生的(例如行驶中的汽车),电能则是由电荷流动构成的,闪电就是一例。当动能以电磁波的形式存在时,例如来自阳光的能量,则称为辐射能。

热能是物体内原子和分子运动所关联的动能。  当物体内部的原子和分子快速运动或振动,并且相互之间发生更频繁的碰撞时,物体的温度就会升高。燃烧火焰产生的热量就是热能的一个例子。

当这些原子和分子的振动或运动减慢时,情况则相反。此时物体被称为寒冷,具有较低的热能——例如水结冰时。
