需要两个物体之间直接接触才能产生的力被称为接触力。摩擦力、张力和法向力是接触力的例子。

无需物体与力源之间发生物理接触即可作用于物体的力称为非接触力。重力、磁力和静电作用力均属于非接触力。

此外,力可以分为集中力和分布力。

集中力是指作用在物体某一特定点上的力,而分布力则是指作用在物体整个表面或体积上的力。

作用在物体顶面的引力略小于作用在物体底面的引力。但通常认为,引力作用于物体的重心处。
