Breaker coordination in radial systems uses time-delay overcurrent relays to limit load interruption. When a fault happens, the nearest breaker should open first. Upstream breakers stay closed because they are set with longer delays. This lets the fault be isolated while the rest of the system keeps running.

If a fault is downstream of the third breaker, only the third breaker should trip. That removes power from the load beyond the fault. The second breaker keeps a longer delay setting, so the third breaker acts as the primary protection. If the third breaker fails, the second breaker provides backup protection.

A fault between the second and third breakers changes the response. The second breaker sees the higher fault current and opens quickly. That action interrupts the loads on both the second and third breakers. The coordination time interval, or the time gap between primary and backup device operation, is usually about 0.2 to 0.5 seconds. This interval helps account for current transformer error and the DC offset in fault current, which reduces the chance of both devices tripping at the same time.

Radial protection also uses separate phase relays for three-phase, line-to-line, and ground faults. Some feeders have high zero-sequence impedance, so they may need a separate ground relay with a lower current tap setting. Digital relays add self-monitoring, communication features, and precise timing. Proper relay coordination helps isolate faults efficiently and supports system stability.
