Mathematical modeling turns a real-life situation into an equation that can be solved. It starts with defining the problem, choosing measurable quantities, and assigning variables to them. Then a matching model is selected and the equation is solved for the unknown value.

This process is especially useful in finance, where models help evaluate investments, loans, and repayment plans. One common example is finding the fixed monthly payment on a loan. That calculation uses the standard annuity formula, which describes equal payments over time.

In the annuity formula, A is the fixed monthly payment that covers both interest and principal. P is the principal, or the original loan amount. r is the monthly interest rate, and n is the total number of monthly payments. The value of n is found by multiplying the loan term in years by 12.

To apply the model, the problem must be stated clearly first. For example, the goal may be to find the monthly payment for a loan when the amount, interest rate, and time are known. After the values are matched to the variables, basic algebra is used to calculate A.

The answer gives the steady payment needed to fully pay off the loan over the set time. This model assumes a constant interest rate and equal monthly payments, which are common in standard loan agreements. It is used for mortgages, auto loans, and student loans, so it is a practical tool for personal and business financial planning.
