Polynomial roots in complex numbers are a key result in algebra. The Fundamental Theorem of Algebra says that every non-constant polynomial with complex coefficients has at least one complex zero. For a polynomial of degree n, where n is at least 1 and the leading coefficient a n is not 0, there is at least one solution in the complex number system.

This result also applies to polynomials with real coefficients, because the real numbers are a subset of the complex numbers. The Complete Factorization Theorem builds on this idea. It says that such a polynomial can be written as a product of n linear factors over the complex numbers, where c1, c2, through cn are the complex roots and may repeat.

Repeated roots lead to the idea of multiplicity. A zero with multiplicity k appears k times in the factorization. The Zeros Theorem then states that a polynomial of degree n has exactly n roots in the complex number system when multiplicities are counted.

These roots can include real zeros, non-real complex conjugate pairs, and repeated zeros. Students often find them using factoring by grouping, synthetic division, and the quadratic formula. Together, these ideas show how polynomial equations connect factoring, roots, and the complex number system.
