The Fundamental Theorem for Line Integrals

Line integrals measure how a vector field adds up along a curve between two points. They compare the field’s direction and strength with the direction of motion along the path. In some cases, this calculation becomes much easier when the vector field comes from a potential function.

A vector field F in two or three dimensions is called a gradient field when there is a scalar function g such that F = ∇g. In that case, g is the potential function. The gradient points in the direction of the greatest increase of g, and it also gives the rate of that increase.

For a smooth curve C that starts at A and ends at B, the Fundamental Theorem for Line Integrals says that the line integral of F along C equals g(B) - g(A). So, when F is a gradient field, the integral can be found by using only the values of the potential function at the endpoints. The shape of the curve is not needed for the calculation.

This leads to path independence. If two smooth curves, C1 and C2, connect the same points A and B, then their line integrals are equal. The result depends only on the starting and ending locations, not on the path’s shape, length, or direction changes.
